Congratulations on the completion of your studies with Pittsburgh Technical College. You are joining a distinguished group of alumni who can be found excelling in exciting careers around the world. But you are not leaving PTC. We will always be here for you if you need us, and we hope that you will keep in touch as you progress through your life and career.

I recently came across the following quote: “The person you will be in five years is based on the books you read and the people you surround yourself with today.” It was not attributed to anyone and I cannot locate a definitive source. But the words strongly show how your education, your time at PTC, will impact your future. Five years from now you may be living in a new town, advancing in a career, building a family – anything is possible. I hope that in five years you take stock of where you are and reflect on this moment, your education, the people who helped you along the way, and the friends that you’ve made. I truly believe that this has been a magical time in your life.

As PTC’s President, I am committed to building the college for the future. We will further grow our connections with industry, our relevance within the world of higher education, and our specialization in the fields we offer. We will grow, we will expand, but we will remain your alma mater, as committed to you five, ten, twenty-five years from now as we were on your first day of class.

Though this may not be the commencement ceremony you visualized for yourself on that first day, you have achieved a milestone in your academic career. I hope that your family and friends are tuning in with you. Although we cannot be face-to-face, we are thankful to recognize and celebrate your achievements.

J.R. MCCARTAN OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARDEach Commencement ceremony at Pittsburgh Technical College includes a presentation of the J.R. McCartan Outstanding Student Award on behalf of the Board of Trustees honoring former President, J.R. McCartan. The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the college. The nominees are individuals who embody the following characteristics:

• Actively support the PTC mission and goals• Significantly contribute to the PTC community• Positively impact the college community• Demonstrate generosity and unselfishness through actions• Serve as a role model for peers

CEREMONIAL AWARDS

January & April 2020 J.R. McCartan Outstanding Student Brittany Kluegel, Criminal Justice

Brittany regularly represented the School of Criminal Justice at Advisory Board meetings, Open Houses, and Orientations. She is a natural leader and has participated in countless hours of community service, including logging more than 2,000 hours with the Salvation Army, helping to garner service awards for herself and PTC. Volunteering with the Salvation Army also allowed Brittany to serve the Greater Pittsburgh community through disaster relief efforts and obtain industry certifications, including the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency basis certification – an unusual achievement for someone her age.

While interning with PTC’s Police Department, Chief Halley was impressed with her work that included effectively updating policies, assisting with a grant application, developing training, and overseeing student workers and other interns.

The PTC Community looks forward to Brittany’s continued contributions as she builds upon the skills she learned in her Associate degree to pursue an Applied Management Bachelor’s degree at PTC.

July 2020 J.R. McCartan Outstanding Student Brittany Acker, Graphic Design

Brittany completed her first degree at PTC in 2009 in Multimedia Video Production and returned in 2018 to continue with Graphic Design. Her achievement of a 4.0 GPA and near-perfect attendance shows her commitment to her learning.

Brittany balanced working with PTC’s Marketing Department while attending classes and participating in extracurricular activities with skill and poise. She has the ability to take on challenges in a positive manner and is selfless when it comes to assisting others. She was instrumental in creating the first Design All Night event at PTC to highlight the accomplishments of her peers. She was an active member of the Creative Writing Club, and her maturity, reason, and friendliness were an asset to the club members. Dr. Jessica Nowacki, the club advisor, indicated that she “is a natural leader” and “truly exemplifies what it means to be a role model to others.”

PTC is proud of her accomplishments, and we look forward to her future success as she continues in PTC’s Applied Management Bachelor’s degree this summer.
