What is a comma?
• A comma is a punctuation mark (,) indicating a pause between parts of a sentence.
• It is also used to separate items in a list and to mark the place of thousands, millions, billions, etc. in a large numeral.
Commas are used for many different things. One of the things commas are used for is to separate items in a series.
On the back of your paper, write 3 sentences that include a series of items using commas.
Please refer to your notes if needed.
Let’s Practice1.At the bend in the road turn right.
2.Signaling carefully she changed lanes.
3.Yes she has that book.
4.When I saw the jewels I thought the kings were rich.
5.No the Egyptians were not just farmers.
On the back of your paper, write 3 sentences
that use a comma to separate introductory
elements. Refer to your notes for help.
Commas can also be used to set off the words yes and no, to set off a tag question from the
rest of the sentence, and to indicate direct address.
Commas should also be used before a conjunction
to join to independent clauses and to separate
adjectives.
