During>the month of May the Battalion participated in Operation Lancaster II in the 4th r.1arines'. AO and Operation Kentucky in the 9th ·l'iarines ' AO •.

Tqroughout a majority or the .Battalion's participation in Operation Lancaster It 1:;he rif],.e: companies were employed as follows:· one corapa11.y: occupied the defensive perimeter at Camp Carroll; one company provided security for Khe Gio bridge (YD 027.562) and Route. 9 from YD 003.565 to YD 060.569; one com­pany provided sectl'riyy for Route. 9 from .YD 060569 to YD 11.5582~­occupying positions at ·".Hikes" .H.i11 (YD 073573) and Hill 37 (YD 089578); and one companywas under OPGON of: 3d Battalion,9th Marines~ AO. with a mission to defend Thon. Son Lam (YD 985552). '

·The two rifle companie.s securing Route 9 pat!,'to11ed and ambushed :extensively in their zon~ of action. Each c.ompany maintained one platoon as a swing platoon. The swing platoons patrolled the entire company zona of action, establishing Patrol Bases and conducting m.utually.supporting ambushes. Squad and Platoon (-) size patrols and ambushes wer.e conducted b;y- the units oc-cupying Khe Gio Br-idge, niUkes." Hill and Hill 37. -

The company manning the defensive perimeter of Camp Carroll continuously improved the defensive wire, cleared fields of fir·e and rebuilt. living bunkers and fi@:lting positions.

The Battalion was also ass-igned.the .task-of installing nand SID's and oper·ating the· l-fiCROTALES -w'itni.il·- the 4th Narines AO. :fiill 37 was chosen as ·the. site .for employment of the MICROTALES. Three ar.ea.s loc.ated ast.ride. a known enemy infiltration route were des.ignated ·o.s lucrative areas for the SID-'s. · Two att.empts were made to er.1plant the -srD•s, one. daylight and the other at pight~ In both instances cont~ct was made with the NVA. Also:, in both attetilpts ·-the I•U.CROTA.LES did not receive the :.::ID signal and they were: subsequently· returned to Regiiilent for examination and r-epair.

The period from. ·22 •to 27 -Nay s~:w the Battalion shifted from 4th Harines' · OPG'ON to.·,9th -I-Iarinos' OPCON. Tho Battalion was assigned responsibility for the defense of Con Thien (A-4), c..;2 .and A-3. One r-ifle company occupied each position, while the f-ourth company reinforced A-3 and A-4 with one rifle platoon, respectively. The remaining platoon occ~pieda defensive posi­tion at C-2 Bridge (YD 128668) which included an important water point .•.

a. Enemy situation at the beginn~ of the period. Elements of the 320th lNA Division were located north of the · .. ,(lam Lo River in the vicinity of Dong &. Mountain (YD '-!:11592). · They were supported by elements of either. the 64th or 52nd Artillery. Regiments, or both. The 27j;h Independent Battalion Headquarters and one to two companies were located in a knmm base camp area in the vicinity of YD 1351. The Cam Lo Local Force Company operoting area was accepted as .being -vrithin the 2d13attaliont 26th.M-'1.rines; AO. Although no hard evi-dence was available it was bGliev::ed that the. 27th Independent ' Battalion and. the Cam Lo .Local Force Company continued their mission of guiding enemy UUi ts through the DMZ and Cam Lo Distri.ct area. This estimate of the enemy si tua..tion was based upon· current order of battle, holdings, URSs c..nd a. study of incidents l'rhich had occurred during the previous .2 months~

b ~ . Enemy s:t. tuation during Operation. Camp Carroll received sporadic enemy artillery and ro.cket attacks, including 75mm pack howi.tzer and 120mm rockets~ from the a.ma north of Dong Ha Motmtain. Company H elements at Mikes Hill (YD 074574} we~ sporadically attacked with .82mm Mortars. From ·contacts by Company H and from a compilo.tion of numerous intelligence. reports. it wss ascertained that:

(:;.) There was a buildup of enemy troops north of the C'am Lo River in t,lw Vo.n Quat Xa area (YD (960).
