SEO: Maryland Sailing Team Takes on the Wind
Terps prepare to win upcoming South QualifierUMD Sailing Team prepares to maintain recent victories in MAISA Regattas
By Liz King
The Maryland Sailing Team is a club organization affiliated with the University
that enables student sailors to compete on a national level. They compete in the Middle
Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) southern division and are preparing
for their upcoming South Qualifier. The sailors spend much of their time reviewing
tactical strategies after coming off of a South Qualifier win last semester.
The Maryland Sailing Team focused on preparing for the South Qualifier during
their weekly meeting on March 12 in order to continue their winning-streak on the
national level.
With eight officers in charge of meetings, all
sophomores or juniors, the Sailing Team utilized all of their
skills to create a cohesive layout of their meetings the month
before the South Qualifier. being held on March 30, to
maximize success.
Previous success
The past success the sailors had drives their desire to win this South Qualifier.
The Terps have high hopes for the upcoming Qualifier after they reached the semi-finals
in both the Colony Cup and the Intercollegiate offshore regatta.

MAISA, an association that covers the area between New York State and
Virginia, also including D.C. and Canada, holds all regattas. Hundreds of sailors compete
on over 40 teams that travel across the conference and the country, raising the stakes for
the Terps in their upcoming regatta.
With each regatta we have had this year, our team has continued to progress in
how far we qualify. We really think we are able to succeed in the South Qualifier, David
Bigelow, co-captain of the team, said. Our practices have become more efficient as we
approach the date.
Practice makes perfect
The Terps practice both on land and water, increasing their knowledge of sailing
significantly. They take three trips a week to Severn Sailing Association in Eastport,
directly across from the U.S. Naval Academy. The
team varies between sailing professionals and novice
learners, dividing the level of intensity in their
practices.
To prepare for the South Qualifier we are
starting our normal practice schedule so we get out on
the water and practice more often, said freshman
government major Brandon Gotwalt.
With each weekly meeting held at the on-campus Eppley Recreation Center, the
officers go over informative lessons and sailing tips to help practice off-water as well.
During their meeting March 12, the sailors learned starting sequences and keys to good
starts.
In meeting, the executive board usesmore visual aids to produce a more
effective meeting.

The meeting hosted a power point using visual aids to display 4 main points to a
good start: clean air, the favored end, tight right yet wide left, and defend the hole. All 35
sailors at the meeting discussed and went over these strategies.
Goals for this weekend
For the upcoming regatta, the team is confident in the practice it has had in their
meetings this semester.
I am confident in our sailing team. We have practiced, we have learned, and we
have had fun. There is nothing more I can ask of my teammates, Bigelowsaid.

SEO: Attracting the sailorsAdjustments to increase attendance at meeting
By: Liz King
For many student organizations on campus, strict mandatory meetings do not
always result in strong attendance. Due to this, the University of Maryland Sailing Team
has been implementing new meeting incentives to gain more support from some of their
sailors who tend to lose interest off-season.
With the South Qualifier regatta potentially
ending the season March 30, co-captain David
Bigelow has been slowly gaining attendance through
his creative additions to meeting to keep the team
involved even after their last regatta. By reaching out to clothing labels like Patagonia
and getting discounts on clothing, Bigelow has already increased peoples attraction to
the sailing team.
For more of our novice sailors, it is more intimidating to get involved or even
show up. For this, we have incentives like our new clothing deals to get more stir about
our team on-campus, Bigelow said.
In addition, Bigelow made an easier way to car-pool to Annapolis his priority. By
having the students driven instead of being asked to use their own cars, a lot of the
liability and fear in traveling will allow for more practice time on the actual water. To do
this, Bigelow has been creating a shuttle system for his sailors he plans to implement in
the Fall of 2013.

A#2Background
1. Secondary Sources:
I used the Maryland Sailing Team website to find out more about the sailingteam, the officers, and their recent success in Regattas. I also used this site to
verify when the meeting would be.
http://terpsailing.com/
I used the College Sailing MAISA website to be able to explain the conferencethe sailing team is in and the sailing experience they have. This website was able
to verify the schedule of regattas that the terps were attending as well.
http://maisa.collegesailing.org/
Primary Sources:
David Bigelow, sophomore business major and co-captain of the sailing team Brandon Gotwalt, freshman government major and secretary of the sailing team
2. Coach Tips:
Rich Chapter 5o Check the Internet for informationabout your sources or topic.o I used this tip by using both websites in my secondary sources to learn
more about the sailing team and the conference that they are in. This
allowed me to have verified information and credible sources.
Rich Chapter 18o Try to get as many good quotes and sound bites as possible.o I used this tip by getting as many quotes from as many people and thenlimiting it by choosing the quotes that I felt were the most influential in
my story.
Rich Chapter 19o Avoid jargon.o I made sure to limit the amount of sailing terms I used in my story so that
my reader would focus on the actual story instead of the confusing words
involved.
Writing Tip:
Going along with the coach tip I used, I also used the writing tip of translatejargon. If there was ever a sailing term that I did not know I got it defined and
then used other words to explain it. This enabled my story to have more of astrong focus.
Writers Tools:
1. Fear not the long sentence.o I used a long sentence in my sidebar to explain in further detail the change
in attendance that Bigelow is trying to create.

2. Tune your voice.o By reading my story aloud, I was able to hear any passive sentences I had
that I would not want and when my word choice became awkward.
3. Build your work around a key question.o I was able to use this tool when reflecting Bigelows engine in my side
bar; how to increase attendance. This helped shape my story. 4. Limit self-criticism in early drafts.
o This tool really helped me during the process of writing my story. Bylimiting my editing to after I had a first draft, I was able to write freely. Ifeel this helped the flow of my story.
Harrowers Deadline Checklisto I followed the accuracy checklist by making sure the spelling of every
name was correct. David Bigelow also goes by Deuce so I had to makesure I picked one name and stuck with it throughout the story.
Fedler Speeches/Meeting Handouts
This worksheet enabled me to understand not only the importance of a stronglead, but the difference between a strong lead and a weak lead.
