1. EXHIBITION BACKGROUNDcomiX eXchange Series

Taking Comix Home Base as a testing ground, local comics artists and creators working in other artistic fields are bringing about comiX eXchange, a series of six exhibitions of massive innovation exchange. Based on the theme "Experienced Artist x Emerging Artist" and “Comics Artist X Artist of Other Media”, six pairs of participating artists will come up with cross-media creations that foster new ways of viewing comics.

Presented by Hong Kong Arts Centre and Comix Home Base under the sponsorship of Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, comiX eXchange not only make artists from different disciplines and backgrounds come together and collaborate, but also calls for public participation. In addition to exhibitions, there will be master classes and workshops in which artists share their works and experiences. People interested in joining the creative profession are invited to take part and experiment with the multiplying effect of creative crossover.

The series started with the first edition in April 2015 to showcase the interweave of audio and visual partnership of Khoo Fuk-Lung and Choi Sai-ho, while the second edition held in July presented Toe Yuen and Ping Pong’s comics/illustration art jam. Now the third edition makes a twist to feature local pioneer parodist Kam Siu-man and the emerging online prankster GALAMAN in a battle of wits.

1. EXHIBITION BACKGROUNDcomiX eXchange Series

Kam Siu-man established his career as a parodist in 1980s with the comics Tai-kung Pao in Jademan Comics (Yuk-long Manhua Bi-weekly). Kam’s Highest Goal comics series, which parodies world-known football stars, is one of his biggest hits.

On the other hand, GALAMAN is famous for his online animation series GALAMAN. Current affairs are illustrated and mocked in the animation. Then the hero GALAMAN shows up, fights the monsters and saves the city.

These two great parodists have worked together to create two animations featuring social absurdity. Battling the best out of each other’s drawing skills and quick wit, they are delivering a seriously funny comics and animation exhibition in this September.

2. EXHIBITION DETAILS• Exhibition Period: 1 Sep 2015 – 1 Oct 2015

3. ATTENDANCEDuring the entire exhibition period, headcount was done at the 3/F. Attendance record is as follows:

4. ARTIST’S PROFILE – KAM SIU-MAN

Kam Kin-man, known as Kam Siu-man, joined the comics industry at the age of 16 as an assistant for Seung-gun Siu-wai’s Gold Comics, using “Kam Tai-man” as his penname. In 1981, following in his senior Tse Chi-wing, Kam joined Jademan Comics and officially adopted the current penname “Kam Siu-man”. Later, he left Jademan and joined hands with Dick Choi to publish Elite Comics. Two years later, Kam returned to Jademan, with which he signed a seven-year contract, and gained acclaim for Tai-kung Pao, which appeared in Jademan Comics (Yuk-long Manhua Biweekly) and was known for its biting satire. In those years, Kam also created various short serials such as Monster King, Kung Fu Boy, Adventurer, Ghost Stories and Sau Sing Chai short stories. In 1989, the contract expired, Kam again left Jademan and went to Siu-keung Publishing, where he penned Siu Man Classics and Four Frames. In the following years, Kam also worked for other publishers such as Culturecom, Freeman and Jonesky.


Markets change like weather. There was a time when martial arts comics was in such vogue, but humorous works including Kam’s were not popular and hardly sold. In 1997, Kam was on the verge of applying for social assistance, the signature line of Ting Hai from the local well-known TV drama, The Greed of Man, “You Honour, I am not guilty!”, pulled him back to chasing his dream. He decided to self-publish comics and gained a decent living by publishing Highest Goal. The success was followed up by works such as Country Urine, Urethral Affairs, Iron Kumquat, Poop of No Return, Humorous Wong Fei Hung, Deepwater Tarzan and Funny Unbeatables.


Kam’s comics strips mainly appeared in newspapers, magazines and comics periodicals, including Mad Dog Daily, Apple Daily, Oriental Daily, Sing Pao, AM730, East Touch, Story of Thunder Wong, Story of Turbo Shek, Drunken Fist, Unbeatables, Iron Marshal and Passion Teens. Besides personal works, Kam Siu-man has been participating in different projects in collaboration with organisations like Hong Kong Jockey Club, Budweiser Beer, San Miguel Beer, Gome Electrical Appliances, Easy Finder and Super-X.

4. ARTIST’S PROFILE – GALAMAN

GALAMAN is created by Johnee Lau who graduated from Hong Kong PolyU, Digital Media. He creates online episode animation GALAMAN, The Eunuch and illustration series Faster Piece!.

GALAMAN has been awarded Gold Award of Hong Kong ICT Awards 2012, Silver Award of The 17th Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Awards (ifva), 2013 L.A. WebFest Theme Song Award and 2013 HK Webfest Creativity Award. Also, it was screened in The 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival, Xian Asian Film Festival 2012, 2012 Shenzhen Fringe Festival, L.A. WebFest 2013, H.K. WebFest 2013, Hannover up-and-coming Festival 2013, Hong Kong Anifest 2014.

5. THE EXHIBITION (3/F – EXHIBITION VENUE)

Restaging the wit and drawing battle

The route of the exhibition started with 3/F Exhibition Venue, where a wooden square table covered with a patterned table cloth and also fours chairs were located. It staged a chess battle atmosphere which indeed told the story of how KAM Siu-man and GALAMAN start on the battle of wit and drawing. The pattern of the table cloth were the Chinese vocabulary they suggested and those circled ones are the 10 words they picked and drew which the original drawings were displaying in one of the rooms and the color copies were printed as postcards.

5. THE EXHIBITION (3/F MULTI-FUNCTION ROOM 7)

Animation Room – 2 Animation Videos by KAM Siu-man and GALAMAN

Room 7 was the first room next to the 3/F Exhibition Venue. It displayed the two animations that KAM Siu-manand GALAMAN collaborating to present the absurd society nowsdays, I Need Real Diving and Lo Chung Mon.

Not only the animations, it also

displayed the figures of two artists.

It partly showcased KAM Siu-man’s original drawings of AM730 features with dialogue added up on to it

and also newspapers mock-ups to show how KAM created from sketching, writing dialogue and also coloring;

while for GALAMAN, it displayed 100+ works of Faster Piece! which he re-created them after joining the

handcraft fairs.

Continued with the table setting at the exhibition venue, Room 7 presented the 10 original drawings

respectively for the words they chosen for battle of wits and drawing skills. The photographs below shown

one of the word, Lion Rock by both artists. There were also postcards printed accordingly to these 20

drawings as give-away.

comics strips.

6. EXHIBITION OPENING CEREMONY

members of comiX eXchange’s judge panel,

7. LIVE DRAWING EVENT @ TIME SQUAREWith the launch of Comixhibition @ Time Square by Comix Home Base, comiX eXchange

Series 3 had a pop-up live drawing event at Time Square to promote the exhibition and

interact with the passers-by.

Local master joker and exceptional comics artist, Kam Siu-man shares his creative journey from Tai-kung Pao, Highest Goal, to currently publishing comics strips on newspaper and magazines in the master class. Local comics artist Siuhak will also join him as a guest speaker, sharing their views on local comics, parody and wordplay creation.

8. MASTER CLASS

Not only giving a sharing talk, KAM also has jammed with Siuhak during the master class. Participants were actively involved in asking questions to both artists.

9. WORKSHOPSDuring the exhibition period, two workshops taught by GALAMAN were organised in Comix Home Base.

The workshops provided the general public with chances to get involved in artist creation.

Our docent was introducing comiX exchange III exhibition to the visitors from Discover Hong Kong

During the exhibition period, the regular public docent-guided tours offered by Comix Home Base –

which cover the history of the building of Comix Home Base and the programmes happening there –

gave visitors a detailed account of the exhibition.

Apart from the public tours, which were held regularly at weekends, there were also pre-booked

private tours for visitors visiting Comix Home Base in groups.

10. VISITORS’ FEEDBACK

To get a better understanding of how visitors felt about the exhibition, questionnaires were distributed in Comix Home Base to collect their feedback.


A total number of 215 questionnaires were collected in the entire exhibition period. Thequestionnaire consists of both multiple-choice and open-ended questions.

Analysis of the data collected from the questionnaires is set out in the following pages. Theanalysis is divided into two parts:

For multiple-choice question, frequency distribution is shown with both raw numbers andpercentages. The percentages are calculated based on the total number of questionnairescollected (i.e. 215). If the figures of responses do not correspond with the total number ofquestionnaires collected, it is because some visitors did not answer the questions. For open-endedquestions, some of the answers given by respondents are shown in the analysis.

Generally, visitors’ responses were positive. For the overall comment on the exhibition, 90.2% of

respondents gave a positive rating (i.e. “excellent”, “very satisfactory”, or “satisfactory”) among these four

aspects. The majority of the respondents generally thought the duration of the exhibition was very

satisfactory, i.e. 35.6% while its format, content and publicity were satisfactory, i.e. 39.1%, 38.6% and

46.1% respectively.

Among all the objectives, 69.8% of the respondents found the exhibition useful or above to achieve

broadening their scope about the industry.

the overall usefulness of the exhibition, with 7.9% of and 18.6% indicating it “definitely

6. How did you know about the activity/programme?

63.3% visitors knew the exhibition through HKAC and CHB publicity, for instance, the leaflets, posters,Facebook Page and the official website while 45.6% especially from HKAC and CHB e-promotionplatform which there was a 16.9% raise when comparing to Comix Exchange Series II (28.6%). Therewere 38 respondents visiting because of their Friends/Family/Colleagues. Apart from that, 55 out ofthem were passed by the exhibition venue nor attracted to CHB architecture. The figure shows andproves CHB as a successful grooming ani-com audience cultural venue, generating 25.6% visitors amongall. Meanwhile, around 16-18% visitors knew it through school and other social media, in particularly0.9% from artist’s social media. It is non-deniable to say that e-promotion is crucial to exhibitions, givingthat a total of 54% as the main source. As there was an extension event in Series III, Live Drawing Activityat Time Square, it drew 3 of the respondents. Despite of not convincing figure from the respondents, theextension event has given chances for the artists to interact with general public, instead of the exhibitionitself.

48 (22.3%) of the respondents like KAM Siu-man, the experienced comics artist more.
