Predicting the future is at best an inexact science. Check with your favorite meteorologist to confirm this. What we do know is that the future will inevitably be different. As you enjoy this year’s edition of The Lamp, you will see the dramatic changes and alterations that have taken place at Walsh and in the lives of our students, our faculty, and our staff. Some are funny; some are sad; and some just are.

But all is not lost. There are certain core values that do not change and because they are the very fabric of Walsh they give us stability and continuity. We call that Mission!

I came here in 1963 as a student from Massachusetts and arrived at a campus with two buildings. Fifty years later there are 26. There were no female students. Today they are the majority. There were two sports. Today there are 22. All of that is change.

But there was also a great spirit of hospitality—there still is. There was great concern for first-in-family students. There still is. There was a faith-based orientation—there still is in the Catholic tradition. Service was a high priority—it still is. Collectively, the fact that these things are still here is called Legacy. It is what we strive to pass on from one class to the next—and we do.

Each of us in our own lives must develop these values and ideals. And along the way, we must welcome and embrace the inevitable changes. And of course, enjoy the journey as we reminisce and savor the experience.

Intelligent Community Forum

Walsh University proudly hosted the Inaugural Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) Institute for the Study of the Intelligent Community International Symposium, October 24-25. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) is a nonprofit think tank that focuses in job creation and economic development in the broadband economy, for the local economy, both large and small, in the developing and developed economies of the world.

Over 300 attendees from as far away as South Korea travelled to North Canton for the two-day symposium “Seizing Our Destiny: New Models for Re-energizing Our Communities, Our Schools, Our Economies,” which was carefully designed to provoke discussion and creative solutions in an interactive format. The ICF Institute Symposium was a one-of-a-kind event that brought business executives, international political leaders, highly-respected educators and local partners together to explore new models for re-energizing communities, schools and economies. The ICF Symposium was supported by a generous grant from the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation.

The global symposium kicked-off with the Institute’s Advisory Board meeting on Wednesday, October 24. Board members for the ICF Institute for the Study of the Intelligent Community were formally announced in June 2012.

NCAA

After three long years, we have passed through to NCAA Division II status!

As the spearhead of this committee, Dale Howard has binder upon binder in his office dedicated to the NCAA transition. His work, along with the time and talent of many faculty, staff and student work has definitely paid off. Walsh has made an investment in the past three years, and this sacrifice will all be worth it come tourna-ment time of next year.

Walsh University received official notification from the NCAA that the school is now an active member of Division II. The long-awaited information was received by Vice President and Director of Athletics Dale Howard and President Richard Jusseaume on June 12, 2013. The acceptance comes after a detailed three-year approval process.

“We were determined to reach our goal—NCAA II status,” Jusseaume said. “The journey was challenging. but VP for Athletics Dale Howard and his team were equal to the task. Now, we resume our quest for success in sports as we do in all our endeavors.”

“We are thrilled to be accepted into full membership of the NCAA II beginning September 1st, 2013,” Howard explained. “Many people have worked very hard to make this transition a reality. I want to particularly acknowledge and thank President Jusseaume and the Board of Directors for their vision and unwavering support of this initiative, Jackie Novak, Faculty Athletic Representative and Chair of the Compliance Committee for her leadership as well as the entire Compliance Committee for all of their efforts. Ellen Kutz, Director of Compliance and her staff played a significant role in helping to transform this area of the athletic department and they deserve a special note of thanks as well.”

“Finally, our coaching staff and the rest of the athletic department staff deserve thanks and recognition for their willingness to learn new systems and adapt to new rules, regulations and even levels of competition,” added Howard. “This four year process has been challenging, but it has moved us to be a better athletic program on every front. While the membership process now comes to a close, we all look forward to continuing to improve both on and off the field of play as we go about the important business of the NCAA II’s ‘Life in the Balance’ platform. Namely educating, developing and supporting our student-athletes in all areas of their collegiate experience; mind, body and spirit.”

The NCAA closely monitored Walsh’s progress ever since it approved the school’s application a little more than three years ago on July 10, 2010. The details of the membership procedure were managed by Howard.

Sponsored by the Walsh University Student Government, the “Educator of the Year Award” is voted on by the Walsh students. The recipient of the award is a professor who is a prime example of a true, all-around educator. They bring their personality and passion for what they teach into the classroom to create a more creative learning environment for students. The individual can explain concepts and theories in stimulating ways that are clear to students and always welcomes new perspectives to further comprehension on subject matter. They go above and beyond to take a genuine interest in students’ career goals and interests.

The recipient of this award is a staff member who works outside of the classroom in the Walsh community. They are looked up to by students as a role model and someone who can provide guidance, advice and support as students develop themselves into capable adults. They get to know students on a personal level and use this acquired knowledge of students to guide them in areas they will excel in. With an open door policy, they are willing to take that extra step to become a key factor in a student’s life, whether it is through casual conversation or even offering key assistance in emergencies.

The Outstanding Student Award, Walsh’s most prestigious academic honor, is awarded to the graduating senior with a very high cumulative grade point average. This year’s honoree is Zachery Beres, with a double major in Biology and Chemistry, and a minor in Mathematics.During his educational career at Walsh, Zachery Beres has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.96 while pursuing his Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in biology and chemistry and a minor in mathematics. As a member of the Honors Program, his hard work has earned him a 4.0 GPA in his majors, consistently placing him on the Walsh Dean’s List every semester.

The Lamp was brought back into focus a couple of years ago. Competing against social

networking to provide information and great memories, the yearbook can seem to take a

back burner in the minds of graduating students. My wish is that Walsh University

students and faculty are able to follow the developments of photography through the pictures

and highlights developed throughout this year. This book would not be possible without the leadership of our Director, Bernadette

Strausbaugh, Assistant Dean of Students, Michael Koluch, and our own staff. Teddy Osborn’s

candids and Tyler Cosma’s photography skills were a God send while compiling different

layouts. Without your eye for detail or passion for our university, a lot of memories would have

been cast aside. The Marketing Department, including Shane Brown and Teresa Griffin, were

always digging up pictures and finding just what the yearbook needed to capture the moment.

We use photography every day. Capturing the latest event, great scenery, or time with

friends is normal for most college students. Click, upload, and post to Twitter, Facebook or

Instagram. Before you let these memories turn into a megabyte of storage, print some out.

Put them in frames and picture books. Remember the late night study sessions in Barrette

classrooms when the maintenance crews kindly askd you to leave at midnight. Remember

how badly you lost your voice the day after a Malone basketball game. Remember how

it felt tossing a ball back and forth with friends on the grassy knoll. Remember the late

night trips walking over to Handel’s, or attempting to make dinner and setting off the fire

alarm. Make memories for more than just a couple of likes on Instagram. I hope you look

back on this yearbook with fondness of your own experiences at Walsh University.
