2012 Opportunity Class Placement Test Centre Advice The Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 25 July from 9.00am to 11.15am. Please allow plenty of time to get to the venue. The test centre for students from our

school is: Chatswood High School Centennial Ave

CHATSWOOD NSW 2067 It is the parent’s responsibility to get the students to the test centre and pick them up from the centre after the test. Students can return to school to resume their regular lessons after the test.

P&C Meeting The next P&C meeting is on Tuesday 24 July at 7.30pm in the library. Official Hours of Supervision. Students must not arrive at school prior to 8:30am unless they have a planned extra curricula activity. Teachers are rostered on playground duty at 8:30am. At the conclusion of school there is no teacher supervision and consequently students must leave promptly.

Partial Absence Note Often students arrive late to school with parents or are collected early by parents due to appointments or other arrangements. The school is accountable for all partial absences of students and as a safety concern, need to know where students are. Occasionally parents have collected their child from the playground without informing the class teacher. The school operates a Partial Absence Note procedure. This requires parents coming to the school office to enter details on the note, the duplicate will be kept in the office as a record, and the original must then be given to the class teacher when the student arrives late or leaves early. 2013 At this time of year I need to begin organising staffing arrangements for 2013. To do this I need to determine the approximate size of each grade. If you have a child who will be starting Kindergarten in 2013 could you please contact the school office to enrol?

Forensic Frenzy

Here at Chatswood Public School we aim to be innovative in our approach to science, always looking for new and exciting ways to introduce scientific concepts to our students. On Wednesday 12 September 2012, CSIRO Education will visit our school. While here, they will be presenting an interactive science program, Forensic Frenzy. We are very excited about this event! CSIRO is one of the most respected science organisations in the world. The CSIRO Science Education Centre is able to draw on the benefits of this and provide quality science programs for students. The CSIRO presenters have experience in teaching and performing. Their amusing and lively approach to science is both engaging and educational. Gail Baker 6B Class Teacher

Music Notes by Kerry Murphy – Music Coordinator

www.cpsmusic.org.au / [email protected]

“Music is the medicine of the mind.” John A. Logan (1826-1886) US Politician

With music administering to our minds, and the holidays having rejuvenated our bodies, we’re all hyped and ready for the traditionally magnificently musical term three! Instrument Lesson Enrolments Open We currently have over four hundred students in our extra curricular Music Program – well and truly more than half the eligible population (which excludes kindergarten) of the school! However, we have plenty of places for new instrumental students! By the time this is published, violin, flute and piano may be full, but if so, we will maintain a waiting list for each instrument. Lessons will definitely be available in ‘cello, trumpet, trombone, lower brass, percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, guitar and recorder. To apply for instrument lessons, please complete an application form from a pink Instrument Program book from the racks outside the school office. Our Choirs are closed – not because there aren’t places (although they are all quite large!) but because there is a choral process that starts at the beginning of the year which prevents late enrolments. Concert Band @ Yamaha Congratulations to our Concert Band on its fabulous performance and its Bronze Award at the Yamaha Music Festival at the very end of last term! We’re told our Band played and behaved beautifully. Very special thanks to Ms Lucas for all her work with the Concert Band and thank you to Ms Moran for supervising the students during this excursion. Instrument Program Invoices Two lots of music invoices will be/have been issued this week:

1. The Instrument Program invoice is now printed on mauve paper and covers two terms’ worth of ensemble membership, hire and administration fees and was placed in your child’s teacher’s pigeonhole on Tuesday afternoon of this week. Payment can be made by eft or cheque and paperwork must be returned to the purple Music Box outside the school office.

2. The Instrument Tutor invoice is still printed on white, covers one term’s worth of instrument

lessons and will be issued by your child’s Tutor at the first lesson of the term. This invoice must be paid directly to the Tutor during your child’s subsequent lesson. Please do not interrupt someone else’s lesson to make these payments and please do not send Tutor invoices to me.

School Uniform at Performances Our Music Program Uniform Code is quite specific and it’s been very disappointing – more so last term than in recent years – to note the number of students who don’t comply. No student has to be a member of our Program and parents sign an agreement to comply with our Uniform Code on the permission form for every performance, but unfortunately, just a few don’t follow through on that promise. Compliance with a dress code shows that musicians care about every aspect of their performances – that they dress and perform ‘ensemble’. Incomplete uniform shows disrespect to the ensemble and simply looks bad. In competitions, points can be deducted for non ‘uniform’ uniform.

Page 5: COMING EVENTS F rom the Principal

This is another aspect of teaching your child the protocols that go with music performance where we need your help. Please help! State Music Camp Welcome back to our State Music Campers! It was such a shame that our Athletics Carnival was scheduled in the middle of this year’s Junior Camp, but I believe our musicians had a fabulous time! If there are ANY photos of our Campers, we’d love a copy by email, please. Arts Unit Music Festivals The NSW Arts Unit runs three separate state level Music Festivals every year, each as wonderful as the other and each with a specific focus. In addition, it also runs the Schools Spectacular. Our school participates in each of these Festivals and several of these Concerts each year, and our many different facets of participation never fail to confuse parents and even some students so I’m offering as brief an explanation as I can manage, along with a summary of our participation.

Parents of participants must note that this table lists performances only and doesn’t mention any of the combined interschool rehearsals. These are noted in the information packs and the Notable Dates at the bottom of the music section of the newsletter. When asking questions or advising us about any of these events, please refer to the festival name and the concert name and the ensemble involved to avoid obvious confusion. You will now understand why we’re confused by questions about ‘the concert’! Arts Unit Music Festival Success! Participation in almost all aspects of all the above concerts is by audition only – places are few and very much prized, so competition is fierce! It’s never ‘a given’ that our school will be included (as is sometimes supposed) because of our performance history – the process is crystal clear and very fair – we have to perform well enough to ‘beat the competition’ in every single audition. So very, VERY special congratulations to our Concert Band and our Chamber String Ensemble on being offered places in the Daintree and Bennelong Concerts respectively, and EXTRA special congratulations to Ms Lucas and Ms Lee for their fabulous direction! (And we’re very lucky that our Concert Band will perform on the same night as our Y3 Choir and our CSE will perform on the same night as our Senior Choir!) Congratulations also to the newly formed NRG – Northern Recorder Group but pronounced ‘energy’ – which is comprised of two current and two past CPS recorder players – Haowen Gao, Bridgitte Holden, Isabelle Palmer and Ariane Suhood. And congratulations to Ms Lucas who brought the group together and is its Director.

Page 6: COMING EVENTS F rom the Principal

Well done, Chatswood, on all our successful auditions - we’re all looking forward to all our spectacular performances! And well done and thank you to those ensembles who auditioned so beautifully but were unsuccessful in gaining places and many thanks to their directors. Ms Lucas @ the Instrumental Festival Rehearsals You’ve previously read that Ms Lucas has been asked to conduct some of the state’s Instrumental Festival concerts this year, and she will be rehearsing with all these combined schools throughout next week – July 23 to 27. As a result, Concert Band, Training Band and Recorder Ensemble rehearsals for next week only have been cancelled. I will rehearse the Advanced Recorder Consort in my classroom (4MU at the back of the school) on Wednesday afternoon – parents, please remember to come to 4MU to collect your children. We wish Ms Lucas all the best with this fabulous honour and opportunity – we know she’ll have a ball! OC Test All ensemble rehearsals will go ahead on Wednesday except, obviously, the Y4 Choir rehearsal. Y4 students sitting the OC test should not come to school in the morning specially for the rehearsals, but can come after school if they are in ARC (in 4MU room this week). Banksia Rehearsal Best wishes to our Banksia Recorders (the ARC) and our Banksia Strings at their preliminary rehearsal next Tuesday. Unfortunately, students who have not returned their permission forms will not be permitted to attend and we will need to consider replacing them for this performance as full commitment is needed. Please remember to wear absolutely strict winter uniform, bring labeled instruments and music (string players need a music stand and ‘cellists need a donut) as well as lunch, water and a snack. Good luck also to Mr Thrift, Ms Lucas, Mr Meader and Ms Hill! Banksia Tickets I’ve already had a plea for Banksia tickets – please remember that if you find you have purchased tickets you no longer need, let me know and I will try to onsell them for you. Jacaranda tickets have gone on sale and I assume they’ve sold out too. Please let me know if you need any help obtaining tickets. Music Camp Invitation Workshop ALL parents are invited to assist with the preparation of the 2012 Music Camp invitations on Friday of next week, July 27, in Studio 6 of the Cottage. The workshop will begin at 8:45a.m. on Friday, and continue until all the invitations are compiled and sorted – if sufficient people can help, this will be before lunch. Helpers can come and go as they please, although we’re hoping someone will be available for the whole workshop to coordinate. If you are able to help, please email us and let us know your availability, including your preparedness to coordinate. I’ll be next door and available all day, so ‘coordination’ is really only for continuity and passing on of instructions to newcomers. Northern Suburbs Memorial Park Function Centre Opening Very special thanks to Mr Karl Wolfenden, Communications Manager of Invocare, who has sent our Music Program a donation of $400 in appreciation of our performances at the opening. Obviously the money will need to spent on something which benefits the choir and the instrument

Page 7: COMING EVENTS F rom the Principal

ensembles who performed, and the students, Committee and I are enjoying discussing different ideas! Thank you to all the parents who sent me the photos they took at the NSMPFC Opening – together with the photos from the professional photographer on the day, I have quite the collection! If your child performed on the day, and you would like copies of these photos, please send a DVD labeled on the disc (not just the cover) with your child’s name and class and ‘Opening’, to the purple Music Box outside the school office. I’m somewhat behind in copying photos for students, but I hope to catch up very soon. Twilight Concert Our annual Twilight Concert, which features performances from all our instrumental and choral ensembles, will be held on Tuesday September 4 and for the first time is being held at the Concourse Concert Hall. Unfortunately, such a prestigious venue comes at a considerable price, so tickets for this year’s Concert will cost $10 for adults and $5 for concessions – performers won’t need a ticket. Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday August 7 from the Concourse Box Office and through Ticketek. We strongly recommend that you go in person to the Concourse Box Office to purchase your tickets, as this is the only way to avoid transaction fees. Parents of performers will receive information packs on Monday August 6. Watch this space for more information! Found Instruments All found musical instruments, print music, ensemble folders – anything related to music – are sent to me – and anyone who has lost an instrument, print music, ensemble folder or anything music related comes to me first to try to retrieve it. A trumpet was recently handed in, but it doesn’t seem to belong to anyone at our school! It has a luggage tag attached to the handle but it only gives a name. If you know a student from another school who has lost a trumpet, please ask them to email our Program, giving details of the lost instrument (like the name on the tag) and we will make arrangements to return it to its owner. Any found CPS music paraphernalia is returned immediately to the student’s teacher’s pigeonhole IF it has a name and class on it. PSSA Soccer

Term Three is an exciting one for PSSA soccer at Chatswood as we march towards the semi-finals and hopefully a place in the Grand Final. The boys and girls have played brilliantly this season – a new confidence, a new hunger and a new sense of purpose. It has been exciting for Mr Layton and Mr Parks to see. The Chatswood Derby was exciting. The Junior As was the closest game we’d seen all season. It was a real arm wrestle. This week, Mr Parks’ team has the BYE and Mr Layton’s team is at home against Roseville at Roseville Chase. Thank you for your support and encouragement of PSSA soccer at Chatswood this past term as we draw closer to the finals. Training has recommenced with seniors on Wednesday and juniors on Friday at Chatswood High School. Please make sure you are there at 8am with your kit ready to train. Full kit is required for match days. As the weather becomes warmer please make sure you pack a large drink bottle for match day and training. If you are unavailable to play on any Friday, you need to tell your coach by Thursday. Mr Parks and Mr Layton PSSA Soccer Coaches

Uniform Shop – Natasha Chetner Open Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8.00am – 11.00am. Minimum credit card sale is $25.00 Terms of Payment: Cash, Visa MasterCard and Eftpos Welcome to new Parents and Students! It was an unusually busy uniform shop day on Tuesday 17 July.

We have introduced a new item to the girls’ winter uniform. We now offer navy cotton/nylon knee high socks in various sizes. Cost is $7 each or three pairs for $18. The easy fit heel ensures the sock will not ride up and the additional elastane at turnover means they will not fall down.

The Uniform Shop keeps some items of second-hand clothing. If you are in need of a particular item or size, please come in or telephone us on Tuesday or Wednesday, we may have your wanted item in our storeroom. Electronic ordering is now available via the Chatswood Public School website. If you have any technical problems please contact Christine Chang via email on [email protected].
