David Hutton, our Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education sums up this important time in our liturgical calendar in the following way. Ash Wednesday this week marks the beginning of Lent in our liturgical calendar. Lent is a period of six weeks in which the memory and enduring impact of the extraordinary story of Jesus is captured. During this time we hear again and are called to reflect on his life and death, his response to his calling, his ministry, his death and resurrection. While in the Catholic tradition customs and rituals have changed, Lent is still a time to stop, to give, to remember and to connect in a bigger way to the life of the church and to our own inner life. (Director’s Message – 7.3.11) David goes on to mention that one way we can connect with the life of the church is through our involvement and support of Caritas Australia. Caritas is the church‘s official support arm for the poor, marginalised and the underprivileged in our society – both here in Australia and overseas. In previous years our school has been a very strong supporter of Caritas and its mission and we would look to continue this support during Lent this year. Part of our life as Catholics is to be ministers of Christ and spread the Good News of God‘s Kingdom. Our support for Caritas is one simple way of helping to spread this Good News. Thanks in anticipation of your help during this Lenten season. Burleigh Catholic Parish Adult Faith Formation Series Our Burleigh Heads Catholic Parish is facilitating a series of short Adult Faith Formation afternoons with some very good and world renowned guest speakers. The series was advertised in last week‘s newsletter and the flyer is attached again for your notice. The first of these Sunday afternoon sessions is set for this weekend (13 March) with a 2.30pm starting time. The talks will be held in the Doyle Centre and Afternoon Tea will be provided. Mass then will be held in its usual time of 5.30pm if people wish to stay on. There is a small cost involved for external people to our parish but it is free to our parishioners. This weekend‘s talk is being led by Sr Mary Coloe, a Presentation sister, and her topic will be entitled ―Jesus of Nazareth of the Gospels‖. This talk would be great for families involved in our parish‘s current sacramental program. Child-minding services will be available at the school as well. If you wish to take up this offer please contact the parish office on 55 766 317 by Friday afternoon. March Parents & Friends Meeting – Monday, 14 March Our next P & F meeting is to be held next Monday night at 7.00pm in our school staff room. At this meeting I will discuss the government financial input levels for our school in relation to recent media stories and also the My School 2.0 data. The issue of our Council–owned Car Park will also be an agenda item as we have had recent discussions with personnel from the Department of Transport and the Gold Coast City Council. Our meeting is expected to be finished by 8.30pm. Winter Sport Commences This Friday our Interschool sports competition begins across the southern Gold Coast schools. Children from our Years 5 to 7 classes will be involved in a number of sports including Netball, Soccer, Rugby League and Aussie Rules. Our thanks is forwarded to our teachers who take on the role of coach / manager for these fixtures. Without this support our children could not participate. I am led to believe that we are one of the very few districts in Queensland that still participates in weekly inter-school sporting fixtures. Good luck to all of our teams – I hope they enjoy the games, learn some new skills and, most importantly, play in a great spirit. Thanks for reading – the League starts this weekend which brings some normality back to Friday night television thank goodness – good luck to your team – maybe a better showing from the Parramatta Eels this season!!!! Keep Our Children Safe We are still having some issues with parents dropping off and picking up children in the wrong areas. Please be aware that these rules are in place for the safety of your children!

There are 2 main areas within the school where children can be picked up or dropped off each day. These are Sunlight Drive and the main car park/bus area off Reedy Creek Road.

The road that accesses the Primary and College Administrations is not to be used to pick up or drop off children at any time of the day. A number of parents are still parking here.

Please also be aware that NO parents should be parked in or drive through the area where the buses pick up children.

The gate to the College (near the ovals) should not be used by parents in the afternoons. There is a lot of traffic coming out of the College and any cars entering this road cause a major bottle neck.

Footpaths, grassed areas, and those marked with yellow lines are non-parking areas. The police or GCCC can/will book cars parked in these areas.

Year 7 Trip Just a reminder that we will be holding an information evening regarding the Year 7 Sydney/Canberra trip. This will be held on Thursday March 31 in the Doyle Centre Theatrette. Have a great week Tony Barron

Upcoming Sporting Events The Catholic carnival that was called off last week has been rescheduled for next Thursday March 17. We hope now for better weather for the new date and once again best of luck to our team. Please notify Paul Hill of any changes for children that were previously advised in relation last week‘s scheduled carnival. Queensland All Schools Cross Country This is one of the highlights of the year for some of our children. Particularly for some of our young children, apart from our school Cross Country event, it is the only opportunity to have a race against children. The event is traditionally conducted in good spirit and also offers our older children a good hit-out before other representative meets. Marymount has featured prominently in past years, often winning the ―Most Successful School‖ and the ―School with most Entries‖ trophies. Children are entered both as individuals and as part of age-grouped teams. The date is set for Saturday 7 May and the venue is St Paul‘s School, Bald Hills in Brisbane. Further information and nominations will be advertised closer to the event. Enjoy the rest of the week ahead. Annette O’Shea

The Australian National Curriculum is being implemented at Marymount Primary. During this exciting phase in period there will be some changes to several of the Key Learning Areas, (KLA‘S). Teachers are working with the new curriculum documents and are modifying some units of work to incorporate these changes. English, Maths, Science and History are our focus for the year. Parent Interviews You may have already received a letter explaining these meetings together with a time sheet to book an appointment with your child‘s teacher. These meetings are an opportunity to talk about your child and their educational needs, and to assist your child by forming a learning partnership with their teacher. If you have not yet seen the letter please ask your child or contact their classroom teacher for a copy. ‘My School’ The My School site is now live on line. We are very pleased with our results. Whilst the comparative results are based on a, ‗one point in time` test, NAPLAN, it provides us with data. When we look at this data and take it into consideration with the wide range of ‗in house` data we collect progressively throughout the year, we have a solid base which informs our planning across the curriculum. Ash Wednesday Today is Ash Wednesday, a feast that marks the beginning of the liturgical season of Lent. This season is 40 days in length and ends at the Mass of the Lord‘s Supper on April 21. Traditions and practices during this time have varied over the years though they still revolve around the themes of prayer, almsgiving, penance, fasting and abstinence. While our understanding of these concepts is less literal than in the past, people over the age of thirteen years, and in good health are still required to fast and abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This morning we were lead in prayer at assembly by 5JH. We welcomed the ashes that had been blessed by Fr Pat at Mass earlier in the morning and listened to the scripture story about Zacchaeus. We prayed and sang about ways to change our ways, much like Zacchaeus. At school we encourage children to focus on changing behaviour and becoming better people. Students make their own personal Lenten promises and work towards these goals. We also focus on the work of Caritas Australia and Project Compassion. We learn about the situations of people in impoverished countries and ways in which our donations can help them to live better lives. I would encourage you to have a close look at the money box coming home with your child this week to see what difference your contributions can make. We were fortunate to meet Catholic priest Fr Silas from Kathmandu in Nepal yesterday. He gave us first-hand accounts of the assistance Caritas has given to families in his region and of the life-changing outcomes for those people and their village.

REFUGEE DAY AT TALLEBUDGERA On the 2" April the Burleigh St Vincent De Paul Conference is hosting a special beach day at Tallebudgera for refugees. This event happens every year as Burleigh liaisons with the Woodridge St Vincent De Paul Conference. Last year I found out that one family had been in a refugee camp for 20 years before they were granted permission to come to Australia. Last year Marymount families were very generous and we supplied the refugees with everything they needed for a day at the beach. I am asking that we try to do the same this year. Many of these people have never been to the beach before and haven't the means to come prepared. I know we have all dug deep to help the flood victims but you may have some of these items hanging around at home. Please send in swimmers that your children have out-grown for all ages; babies, boys and girls. We need adult swimmers also but please one pieces for the women as they are very modest. Last year the women wore the swimmers, board shorts and a sarong over the top to go swimming. Things we need: all sizes - children; men and women swimmers; board shorts; hats; sarongs; wet shirts; beach towels or bath towels; backpacks to carry their towels and togs home. Sporting equipment like balls; plastic cricket sets; buckets and spades; plastic trucks; anything that your children like to play with at the beach. Please send these items to student reception and I will deliver them on the day. Thank you for your on-going support. Jane Lennon
