Character Spotlight

Clay. Diana. Amazon. Member of the Justice League.

Princess.

Wonder Woman

This superheroine has been around kicking butt for a long

time-since 1941. I was introduced to her by watching the

Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated

series and now I’m currently reading her new comic book

series in the DC New 52. And she’s this episode’s Character

Spotlight.

So far I’m enjoying the new 52 story of Wonder Woman. I’ve never read any of the stories

pre-relaunch, so I’m glad for the DC relaunch. If you’ve never read Wonder Woman there

are a few things you should know about her:

She’s a warrior princess of the Amazons (based on the Amazons of Greek mythology) who

live on the island of Themyscira.

Her real name is Diana

Her mother is Hippolyta who pre-DC relaunch formed her out of clay but now post

DC relaunch Zeus is her father.

Her signature weapons:

Lasso of Truth which forces those who are bound by it to tell the truth. It’s virtually

indestructible.

A pair of indestructible bracelets which can deflect energy blasts and bullets.

A golden tiara which serves as a dagger and a throwing weapon returning to her like

a boomerang.

And depending on which stories you read she also has an invisible airplane.

I recommend reading DC’s relaunch of Wonder Woman. It’s only on issue #4 so you can get

caught up real quick. Also watch Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. These two

shows are excellent and you’ll definitely see Wonder Woman in action. The 2009 animated

film in which Wonder Woman was voiced by Kerri Russell is also an excellent way to learn

about Wonder Woman.

There has been a push by a lot of fans for a Wonder Woman film but it’s been in

development hell for a long time. There was going to be a live-action TV show on NBC-

starring AdriannePalicki-but it was canceled before the pilot even aired.

Hopefully there will be a live-action film in the future. But for now, there’s plenty of

Wonder Woman out there for you learn and enjoy the character!

Classic Comic Review

Why am I reviewing older comics?

Well because I’m still sorta new at this and I’m trying to catch up on reading the ones that I

wasn’t able to read growing up. Also there are many people out there who are either new to

comics or are seasoned pros who may want to revisit some of the older stuff. In fact these

comics never get old. Besides, there are many people out there who are reviewing the new

comics. So without further ado, I give you this episode’s Classic Comic Review…

Ant Vol. 2 Issue #3 “Reality Bites” part 3

Publisher: Image

Story & Art: Mario Gully

Story & Script: Marc Hammond

Lettering: Ninja Lettering’s Payton Gauldin

Color: Stefani Rennee

Editor: Michael Patrick Sullivan

Cover: Mario Gully & Avalon’s Rob Bo

Ant Created by: Mario Gully

A few months back for my first review, I did Spawn

issue #1 and so as I was going through my collection

of back issues, after spotting this comic, I became

curious and wanted to know who was this Ant lady sitting on Spawn’s lap? Well needless to

say, I wasn’t disappointed. But before I tell you what I thought of this issue, let me give

you a little background about this comic book character:

Ant was created by Mario Gully who has stated that the concept of Ant was created while

he was incarcerated in 1996 for attempted armed robbery. Gully says that one day he was

looking through a barred cell window and a tiny ant crawled in from the outside. He later

vowed to change his life and make something out of himself. He then created Ant.

Volume one of Ant was published by Arcana Studios. The first issue "Days Like These",

sold out in 9 days. The book later appeared on eBay going for as much as $100 for a good

condition issue #1. The first volume ran for 4 issues before moving to Image Comics.

Page 12: Comicmaniacs Magazine Episode #2

Classic Comic Review

The second volume of Ant was published by Image Comics, and featured heavy hitters such

as Spawn and the Savage Dragon as co-stars. The first 3 issues sold out and the momentum

of the character and the popularity of the creator, Mario Gully, grew. This series ran for 11

issues. Currently Ant is being published at Big City Comics with only three issues of

volume three having been printed.

Now onto my review:

I only have part three so I don’t know what exactly happened in the first two issues but

apparently at the beginning of this book Ant (Hannah Washington) is having to fight

Spawn and doesn’t know who Spawn is or remembers their previous encounters. So that’s

the half of the book. The other half is Ant having a flashback and remembering her past

and Spawn is able to see her flashback and now knows who Ant is and realizes that she’s

an friend and not an enemy.

Spawn then tries to help Ant find her dad who she believes is dead. They first try to enter

hell but are not able to. They then try to enter heaven but are also shut out. Since they

couldn’t enter either heaven or hell, Spawn and Ant believe that Ant’s dad must be alive

and Ant says goodbye to Spawn-who tells her in a friendly way not to come back to his alley

and also to tell her dad that he says hello.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. I want to know more about this character Ant who is not

only a woman superhero but also is an African-American woman and was created by a

black writer. If you have the chance to read Ant please do so! It’s a great story.

Geeky Quotes

Another new entry for this episode. Ladies and gents, I bring you Geeky Quotes-The

Holiday Edition. Enjoy.

“I love Christmas Eve. Maybe even more so than Christmas itself. It's the one night of the

year when the entire world just...stops. In those few hours before the dawn - human,

mutant, everyone, just sort of holds their breath in sweet anticipation...waiting to see how

badly they're going to be disappointed in the morning. In its own tragic way...it's kind of

romantic. That's why I love Christmas Eve.”

--Emma Frost (Earth-616)

Schott: Mrs. Duffy? Mrs. Duffy? I have a surprise.

Lois: So do we. You're busted. Merry Christmas.

-Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Season 2 Episode 9 “Seasons Greetings”

The Joker: [singing] Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg, the Batmobile lost a

wheel, and the Joker got away! -Batman The Animated Series “Christmas With The Joker”

Robin: Okay, I'll make a deal with you. If we go out on patrol and Gotham is quiet, with no

sign of the Joker, we come back here, have Christmas dinner and watch "It's A Wonderful

Life".

Batman: You know, I've never seen that. I could never get past the title. –Batman The

Animated Series “Christmas With The Joker”

Harley Quinn: I'm depressed, Red. Here it is holiday time and we're hiding out in this

dingy rat trap. No presents, no fun, no nothin'. Can't we at least get a Christmas tree?

Poison Ivy: What? And support the mad campaign of botanical genocide that grips this

country every December?

Harley Quinn: But Christmas trees are so bright and fun and pretty. Oh, please? Please?

Please? Please? –Batman The Animated Series “Holiday Knights”

Batgirl: Don't waste your ammo on him. Shoot the Santa. –Batman The Animated Series

“Holiday Knights’

Princess Morebucks: What? Why?

Bubbles: Because Santa has his own list and he checks it twice. It says who's naughty and

who's nice.

Princess Morebucks: So?

Bubbles: Duh. You're naughty. –The PowerPuff Girls “Twas The Fight Before Christmas”
