SIGHET PRISON The Sighet prison,

located in the town of Sighetu Marmaţiei,  Maramureş county, Romania, was used by the communist regime to hold political prisoners.

It is now the site of the Sighet Memorial Museum,

IULIU MANIU Sighet prison was

reserved for political opponents of the communism regime. 

 Many important figures of inter-war Romania died in custody, including the leader of the National Peasants' Party and former Prime Minister of Romania,

SIGHET PRISON On 5 and 6 May 1950 over one

hundred dignitaries from the whole country were brought to the Sighet penitentiary (former ministers, academics, economists, military officers, historians, journalists, politicians), some of them convicted to heavy punishments, others not even judged.

In October-November 1950, 45-50 bishops and Greek-Catholic

and Roman-Catholic priests were incarcerated to Sighet.

PITESTI PRISON The Pitești prison was a

penal prison, but in reality it was political prison.

Best remembered for the brainwashing experiments carried out by the Communist authorities of Romania between 1949-1952 (also known as the "Pitești Experiment" or - the "Pitești Phenomenon").

Pitești Experiment 

The Pitești Experiment was designed as a way of "reeducating" political prisoners opposed to the communist government of Romania.

RAMNICU SARAT POLITICAL PRISON

Ramnicu Sarat prison, one of the most feared prisons in Romania, the health and lives crushed political leaders of the interwar period, culminating in the extermination of period communist regime.

Bărăgan deportations-Ethnic cleansing1951-1956

The Bărăgan deportations were a large-scale action of penal transportation, undertaken during the 1950s by the Romanian communist regime.

Their aim was to forcibly relocate individuals who lived within approximately 25 km of the Yugoslav border (in present-day Timiş, Caraş-Severin, and Mehedinţi region of Romania ) to the Baragan Plain.
