THE ENVIRONMENT

Eco-Schools is an international programme of environmental and sustainable developmental education for schools.

Bahçeşehir College ‘Florya’ is member of Eco-Schools.

In cooperation with Science Department, we started our new topic by choosing ‘Environmentalist Heroes’ of our school.

We chose four students from each class and those students were responsible for both running the programme of Eco-Schools activities and our Comenius Project activities.

Okulumuzda çevre konusunda yürütülecek çalışmaların organizasyonunda görev almak

üzere her sınıftan 4 öğrenci seçilecektir. Bu çalışmada görev almak isteyen öğrencilerin bu kağıdı doldurup Fen ve Teknoloji öğretmenlerine en geç 27 Eylül 2013 teslim etmeleri gerekmektedir.

Okulumuzdaki çevre çalışmalarında görev almak istiyorsanız aşağıdaki yönergelere dikkat ediniz.

Bu kağıdı zamanında öğretmenine teslim eden öğrenciler arasından seçim yapılacaktır. Bizim çevre kahramanımız neden sen olmayasın?

The students filled in the following application form and applied for the position of an environmentalist hero.

After the election they had meetings.They prepared a programme to run their activities.

The students who are elected to be the ‘Environmentalist Heroes’ wear these blue coats on activity days.

First, our students created their own tales, just with pictures.

Afterwards, they exchangedthe stories and wrote tales for each other’s picture stories.

HOW TO RECYCLE

We organised campaigns for the re-cycling of paper, batteries, lids and electronic waste.

First the ‘Environmentalist Heroes’ introduced the boxes for waste paper, batteries and lids to all the students from each level.

And these boxes were placed in classes and some other specific places around the school.

Each level did in-class activities about recycling.

Kindergarten and primary school students created maquettes from cardboard waste.

In secondary school,

All the teachers from all branches emphasized the importance of recycling.

Another group called ‘Academy of Environment’ ran a seminar about recycling electronic waste.

And a group from the municipal council ran a seminar for our secondary school students about recycling glass.

Our secondary school students also took part in the ‘Recycling of Electronic Waste’.

With the help of their Science teachers, the Environmentalist Heroes prepared a brochure for this campaign.

They visited the Technological Waste museum with their teachers.

They created their own slogans for the campaign.

And as a final step they handed in the things that they had collected to the municipal council.

During all these activities they decorated bulletin boards to introduce their contribution to the recycling process.

was the slogan we chose for the activities about water pollution.

WATER POLLUTION

We organised a seminar for our students to inform them about water pollution.

Then, in cooperation with ‘turmepa’ (an institution devoted to work for protection of the sea) and Undersecretariat for Maritime Affairs, we organised a diving activity. Our students observed the waste taken out of water. The divers answered the students’ questions and informed them about water pollution.

Afterwards, our students wore plastic gloves and collected the garbage on the seaside in plastic bags. And this activity took place in press.

During their Science lesson our students made some experiments with water and performed a drama about water cycle.

In Information Technology lesson, the students worked on their ideal sea.

In Turkish Language lesson, the students wrote stories about water.

In Maths lesson, they had a performance homework about calculating the avarage water consumption from water meters.

The students wrote slogans about saving water, they prepared brochures about saving water, they walked around the school and put these brochures in the post boxes of our neighbours.

We celebrated 22nd March ‘World Water Day’ in our school.

‘WORLD WATER DAY’

We invited ‘AKUT’ (Search and Rescue Team) to our school organised a symposium for our students to raise their awareness about natural disasters.

After the symposium we organised an earthquake and fire drill.

Our 5th grade students searched for traditional games that can be practiced outdoors. After talking about these games in classes, we played the games in our school garden.

We took our 6th grade students to Istanbul University Botanical Garden. They also observed ‘Climate Changes Exhibition’ in the university.

‘LITTLE ENVIRONMENTALISTS’ SONG

In cooperation with the Music Department, our students sang a song called ‘Küçük Çevreciler’(Little Environmentalists) in their mother tongue.

OUR TRIP TO…

POLONEZKÖY

Polonezköy, formerly known as Adampol is a Polish village located in Istanbul, TURKEY... It was founded by Adam Czartoryski in 1842.

In 1772 Austria, Russia and Prussia signed a treaty to share Poland. However, the Ottoman Empire never accepted the division of Poland. With this friendly behaviour of the Ottomans, Turkey became a harbour for the Polish political emigrants.

The inhabitants of Polonezköy took the Turkish citizenship in 1938.

Polonezkoy's reputation spread out to Istanbul very fast with this interest.

In 1935, the founder of Turkish Republic, ATATÜRK, have visited Polonezkoy as well.

Polonezkoy eventually became a tourist place and a popular holiday town. Polonezkoy today in Turkish lands, have kept the Polish culture alive for more than 150 years. Although Adampols are Turkish citizens, they also feel themselves as real Polish people. They speak Polish with each other and carry out their traditions.
