• Founded in October 1902 and based in central London at the London Day Training College (LDTC)

• As University of London and London County Council• At least 4 different identities• 1932 became Institute of Education• 1949 an institute of 30 associated colleges and

departments of education, responsible for training 1 in 4 new teachers in England and Wales

• 1987 awarded royal charter – independent college and school of University of London

Views of the IOE

Professor Husbands became Director of the Institute of Education in January 2011; the 11th.

Research interests in education policy,  teacher education and history education.  He has written widely in these areas.  He has directed numerous research projects.
