CULTURAL VISIT
On Friday morning you’ll have the opportunity to visit a singular and unique
place:
PARK GÜELL
Etching by Sergi
Castignani , 2005
This park was designed by Antoni Gaudí, the most prominent Catalan architect
of the new style that appeared by the end of 19th century through the
industrialised countries in Europe. In Catalonia, this style was called
“Modernisme”, whereas in other places it took different names, such as
“Modern Style “ in Scotland or “Art Nouveau” in France.
Mr Güell, a very wealthy patron who commissioned most of Gaudi´s buildings,
wanted to build an urbanization inspired by the concept of the garden city
that had already been developed in Great Britain, like Letchworth Garden city.
Mr Güell asked Gaudí to design it on top of a hill of Barcelona, far away from
the busy streets of the unhealthy industrial city. Unfortunately, the wealthy
families of that time didn’t appreciate Gaudi’s wild artistic ideas, so they didn’t
want to live there an eventually, it became a public park.
