OBJECTIVE As you know, many times we have a customer in our chair who says, “It always looks so good when you do my hair, then I go home and I can’t make it look the same.” The sign of a great stylist is their ability to educate their customers to replicate the look at home. Sometimes we forget to tell our customers about the products we used on their hair, how much of the product was used, and how it was placed in the hair. We also forget to show our clients how to use their styling tools with those products. The objective of A Night of Knowledge is to educate our customers on the products and tools that will help them get the great looks at home you have created for them in the salon. Regis Corporation © 2010 Printed in the USA Vertical Just as in cutting, vertical sections will collapse hair closer to the head, eliminating volume from the scalp. Use vertical sections and iron from scalp to ends vertically, taking away all volume while still controlling frizz. Diagonally When using the flat iron in diagonal sections, you will have the best of both diagonal and vertical techniques. Take vertical sections on the head directed towards the face. Smooth hair from scalp to ends, creating a look that falls somewhere between the volume of the horizontal technique and collapse of the vertical technique. Curling Iron Use: To add curl/volume/texture to the hair Use a curling iron correctly to create volume, direction or curl with the appropriate techniques. On Base By over-directing the hair by 45 degrees, the curl will sit on its base, creating the most amount of volume from the scalp. Half Base By holding the hair out at 90 degrees, your curl will have moderate volume from the scalp. Off Base By under-directing the hair by 45 degrees, the curl will sit off its base and have no volume from the scalp. Remember: The same rule holds true for choosing a curling iron as it does for choosing the proper round brush. What results are you looking for in your style? • One turn around the barrel gives volume. • Two turns around the barrel give volume and direction. • Three turns around the barrel gives volume, direction and curl. Vertical

Just as in cutting, vertical sections will collapse hair closer to the

head, eliminating volume from the scalp. Use vertical sections and

iron from scalp to ends vertically, taking away all volume while still

controlling frizz.

Diagonally

When using the flat iron in diagonal sections, you will have the best

of both diagonal and vertical techniques. Take vertical sections on

the head directed towards the face. Smooth hair from scalp to ends,

creating a look that falls somewhere between the volume of the

horizontal technique and collapse of the vertical technique.

Curling IronUse: To add curl/volume/texture to the hair

Use a curling iron correctly to create volume, direction or curl with

the appropriate techniques.

On Base

By over-directing the hair by 45 degrees, the curl will sit on its base,

creating the most amount of volume from the scalp.

Half Base

By holding the hair out at 90 degrees, your curl will have moderate

volume from the scalp.

Off Base

By under-directing the hair by 45 degrees, the curl will sit off its

base and have no volume from the scalp.

Remember: The same rule holds true for choosing a curling iron as

it does for choosing the proper round brush. What results are you

looking for in your style?

• One turn around the barrel gives volume.

• Two turns around the barrel give volume and direction.

• Three turns around the barrel gives volume, direction and curl.

PRODUCTS TO BE USEDOrganized by categories, Paul Mitchell products do exactly what they say, so they’re easy to use and recommend.

STYLING TOOLSBlow-DryerUse: To remove moistureAt this time you are not styling the hair. You are using the blow-dryer without a nozzle to remove excess moisture. This is accomplished by applying air to the mid-shaft while moving the hair in different directions.

BrushesThe truck and trailer technique can be used to smooth hair. Think of a semi truck: the truck leads, and the trailer follows behind. Use your brush and blow-dryer in this way; the brush acts as the truck while your blow-dryer follows behind. This will smooth the hair into the brush without causing frizz. This is accomplished by using a paddle brush on the hair close to the scalp and applying warm air directly over the bristles of the brush as the hair slides through to ends. The warm air and tension will smooth the hair. Remain methodical as you do this.

Vent BrushUse: To work through the hair more easily and also help remove excess moistureThis brush has only four to five rows of bristles and they are further apart. This allows the brush to slide through the hair more easily and it removes excess moisture.

Paddle BrushThis brush is used to smooth hair. It has a wider base and more rows of bristles. This allows us to have a stronger grip and more tension can be applied to smooth curl/frizz from the hair.

Round BrushUse: To shape the curl within the styleRound brushes come in various shapes and styles, metal and ceramic. They have a stronger grip to stretch and smooth the hair. The metal and ceramic hold the heat applied to the hair by the blow-dryer. The size of the round brush and the direction of the blow-dryer on the brush will determine the size and strength of the curl in the style.Remember: The round brush works under the same concept as a roller.

• One turn around the brush gives volume.• Two turns around the brush give volume and direction.• Three turns around the brush give volume, direction and curl.

SMOOTHING AND STYLINGAt this time you are styling the hair. The dryer, along with the proper tools, is used to smooth or curl the hair. This is accomplished by placing the nozzle on the dryer and using the truck and trailer method. Direct the air so it flows over the hair as air flows over a car as it goes down the road. This will allow the warm air to dry the hair and close the cuticle without allowing the scalp to get too warm.

Flat IronUse: To smooth frizz/curl from the hairHorizontalJust as in cutting, horizontal partings will create width and volume within a shape. When using the flat iron to smooth the hair using horizontal partings, you will smooth and eliminate frizz as well as seal the cuticle, leaving a small bit of volume at the scalp.
