Operation of standard Internal Combustion Engine
Crank Shaft rotates it moves Cylinder downward
The camshaft opens the intake valves allowing air to be drawn into the cylinder.

Operation of standard Internal Combustion Engine
Fuel is injected
![Page 11: Combustion engine](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022061220/54bca7674a7959d3538b456d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Ignition occurs between 80 - 160 before Top Dead
Center (TDC).
Operation of standard Internal Combustion Engine

The engine loses some energy as the cylinder has
to work against the expanding gas.
Operation of standard Internal Combustion Engine
![Page 13: Combustion engine](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022061220/54bca7674a7959d3538b456d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The reason why high compression engines require
higher Octane Fuel is because ignite fuel closer to
TDC and it requires more light end distillates to enhance combustion

Combustion continues past TDC and expanding gases drive the cylinders
rotation

Combustion stops when the Air Fuel Ratio
reaches about 14.7-1.

Operation of standard Internal Combustion Engine
Cams open the exhaust valve allowing exhaust to be pushed out.

Operation of standard Internal Combustion Engine
The O2 sensor measure air/fuel ratio as a function of heat generated by the catalytic action of the O2 sensor Platinum surface.
![Page 19: Combustion engine](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022061220/54bca7674a7959d3538b456d/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Built into the O2 sensor is a thermocouple. This
device coverts the heat generated at platinum
surface of the O2 sensor into an output voltage.

Based upon the voltage output of the O2 sensor, engine RPM,
engine load and throttle location . The ECU will determine the
amount of Gas to inject.
