The Combisafe Difference
The Combisafe systems concept has been developed over
the years and now incorporates a vast range of productsolutions, technical support, research and development
projects, component testing, training, installation and
consultancy service. Combisafe can support the needs of a
project at any stage, however, their early involvement will
permit the greatest flexibility of solution, and will always
produce improved results practically, commercially, and in
terms of safety.
Industry not Product Driven
Even Combisafes product grouping structure is married to
the general Height Safety hierarchy, with Fall Preventionsystems offered before Fall Protection systems, and
Collective solutions offered before Personal ones.
Alongside these product divisions, lie the Access products
and the extensive array of Technical Consultancy Services.
Combisafe Prevention
Within the collective Fall Prevention range, systems
include the Steel Mesh Barrier S-System that can integratewith the traditional timber solutions, and its partner
the Steel Mesh Barrier C-System for integration with
scaffolding. Both are fully compliant within the relevant
performance classes within the European Standard (EN
13374). Completing this group is the Net Barrier System,
designed to satisfy the edge protection needs of steep roofs
or large span structures, and meeting the performance
requirements of both Class C within EN 13374, and
System U within EN 1263.
Combisafe ProtectionThe Fall Protection range includes the Safety Net Fan,
with specifications for both material and man catching.
This system not only protects the site workers from falls
and falling materials, but as it absorbs the fall energy and
contains the falling materials, it also protects passers-by.
The man catching specification meets the performance
requirements of System T within EN 1263. Within this
group is Alsipercha, the flexible sky hook for concrete
frame construction, the truck or trailer Loading System, and
a full range of Miller Personal Fall Protective Equipment
from Sperian.

Combisafe Access
Within the Access grouping, Combisafe has developed
Site Stairways for easy, flexible, and safe access betweenlevels, and Working Platform systems to provide light-
weight, modular, high level access without the need to
restrict the area below. Combisafe has also extended its
range of Access solutions to include weather-protection,
safety guardrail, and scaffolding systems.
Combisafe Services
The Service offering includes full Technical Support with
drawing and design integration capacity, and bespoke
design for unique problems requiring individual solutions.
There is extensive training provided at various levels, bothon specific product ranges and on all aspects of Work@
Height Safety. The training is best accessed through one of
the Safety Centres, which combines product display and
system demonstration on an enclosed and weatherproof
three-storey frame, together with high quality meeting
rooms and catering.
Alongside these services, Combisafe offers access to
systems installation, and project consultancy for all aspects
of Work@Height.
Pioneers
Combisafes passion and commitment to performance
standards for all its system solutions is legendary.Combisafe hosted the first meeting of the technical
committee for the European Standard for Temporary
Edge Protection Systems (EN 13374) back in 1994 in
stersund. Since then, Combisafe has given freely of the
years of experience represented within its technical teams,
strengthening the drafting committees and maintaining the
link between the resulting standards, the leading edge of
product development, and the major end user customers
within the industry.

Overview: One New Change is takingshape as a world-class contemporarybuilding designed to complement itshistorical neighbour, St Pauls Cathedral.
Located on Cheapside, this mixed-use development offers 31,587m ofprestigious office space and 20,438mof shops, cafs and restaurants transforming the area into a seven-dayshopping and leisure experience.
One New Change is due to be completedin 2010.
Comment:
During this project a proprietary edgeprotection system was required, thatwas equally at home on concrete andsteel. We also needed the facility towork through the edge protection wheninstalling the cladding panels. Combisafewere able to meet all these criteria withtheir Steel Mesh Barrier System and alsoprovide us with solutions to safely off-loadvehicles, and the Safety Net Fan systemto protect site workers and the publicfrom the risk of falling debris. With thetight deadline, another key factor in our
decision was the off-the-shelf availabilityof attachments, capable of fixing to steelbeams with very large overhangs.

Overview: TownTown is one of the largestconstruction projects in Austria including21 office buildings, one undergroundstation, an underground car park withapprox. 650 parking spaces, as well as aplaza with various shops and restaurants.Close to Vienna International Airport,TownTown presents not only a newdistrict but a modern and outstandingbusiness park.
With 22 floors and a unique acute-angledfaade, the new Company Building 03,The Tower, will claim a landmarkposition on the skyline of Vienna. TheCombisafe Safety Net Fans were used forthe edge protection of the office tower, covering 36,000m.
This 280 Million project will becompleted in the end of 2012.
Comment:
This project was very challenging for us.While working on the concrete frame inthe upper floors of the building, workson the actual faade were also beingcarried out on the lower floors. Therefore,we needed an edge protection system, which provided a fall-arrest system for ourworkforce as well as protection againstfalling debris. The Combisafe Safety NetFans proved to be the best solution. Easily
assembled at ground level, we were ableto lift them into position by crane and fixthem along the edge of the 13th floor.

Overview: A 6 Million renovationproject is currently being carried out onthe 150m high bridge Pont de la Caillethat joins Cruseilles to Allonzier-La-Caille.The renovation work on the listed
historical monument will be completedin two phases; phase 1 on the deck, andphase 2 on the structure of the bridge.During renovation, a collective fallprevention system was required whichwas quick and easy to erect and couldwithstand high wind loads, and containdebris.
The contractors DV Construction and VSLused over 200 Steel Mesh Barriers, SteelMesh Barrier Make-up, Safety Posts andSite Stairways for the edge protection of
this project. The bridge will be completedat the end of August 2010.
Comment:
With a total height of 150m, a specialedge protection was needed for thisproject. The modular system fromCombisafe proved to be the best solution.By using the Steel Mesh Barriers we wereable to protect our workers along theedge of the bridge as well as block thevisibility of the deep valley underneath,
which made them feel much safer, especially in phase 1 whilst working onthe decking of the bridge.

Overview: With 44 floors and a totalheight of 165m, Maastoren is the tallestbuilding in the Netherlands, and willdefinitely be a new landmark in theskyline of Rotterdam once finished in thebeginning of 2010.
The new skyscraper covers a total area of69,000m, including 44,000m of officespace and 13 parking floors with around600 parking spaces. A special feature isthe 7m high glass boardroom, situatedon the 44th floor of the building, whichoffers a panoramic view of Rotterdam andthe river Maas.
During this project, the Combisafe SafetyNet Fan and Steel Mesh Barrier System
were used to protect the workers alongthe edge of the building.
Comment:
The Safety Net Fans proved to be thebest solution for this project as theyallowed us to protect our workers onsite and pedestrians from falling objects, which is a very big problem for any high-rise construction. Both the Steel MeshBarriers and the Safety Net Fans wereinstalled on the ground and then lifted
into position by crane. Thus, no work atheight to install the edge protection wasnecessary.

Tension Bar SystemOverview: The court house in Falun,Sweden, is to be renovated adding anextra storey, and a temporary roof isrequired to protect the existing premiseswhile work continues throughout thewinter. Scaffolding contractor JUFByggnadsstllningar AB selected a UBIXTemporary Roof for this project.
UBIX is remarkably light, around 8kg/m,which is of great benefit when erectingby crane. The fully-braced roof bays are
very rigid and prove very simple to rigand manoeuvre into place on the scaffoldsupport.
The roof is calculated for a basic windspeed of 25m/s and a snow load of70kg/m. Mounted on a standardfreestanding scaffold structure severalmetres above the existing building, potential heavy snow loads could causehigh transverse forces. To counteract theseforces, the UBIX Tension Bar System hasbeen specified. The Tension Bars link
each side of the roof with prefabricated,high-tensile tubes. The whole systemproved extremely easy to assemble on theground prior to lifting the roof bays.
Comment:
I have had great results with UBIXsince investing in the system last year, and the service from Combisafe hasbeen excellent. They have helped mewith design and erection advice, so thatthe jobs have gone really smoothly. We
will certainly be looking to use UBIX infuture whenever we need reliable weatherprotection.

Products: PREGUARDOverview: The Arts Tower was designedduring a competition in 1959, and openedin June 1966 by the Queen Mother.
It was originally built to accommodate160 staff and 1,000 students, but, inrecent years, has become overcrowded. As part of a major refurbishment package, the landmark Grade II listed buildingis about to embark on a renovationprogramme to improve flow of movementand amenities for all users.
Comment:
The access scaffold for the Arts Towerwas a major project for HT ScaffoldingSystems Ltd, involving complexengineered foundations for the structurethat will be 39 lifts in total standing amassive 80 metres high on completion.Having been one of the first scaffoldingcontractors to invest in the PREGUARDadvance guardrail system, we areconvinced that it offers the best fallprotection for our scaffolders. BAMConstruction was keen to see advanceguardrails used on the project and wedecided to purchase a complete ringof PREGUARD around the wholeperimeter, totalling 118m. Weve beenimpressed by the speed with which acomplete ring can be raised, in fact ittakes less than a minute per bay anddoesnt slow down the erection work atall. Based on our experience on this site,we have decided to roll out PREGUARD
on all our contracts. This will give us agreat advantage when tendering for newwork with all blue-chip clients.

Comment:
The Combisafe products allowed usto install the edge protection system atground level using the Steel Jaw Clamps, and lift the steel beams into position withthe edge protection in place. Thus, we

The slender glass and stainless steelstructure of 46 storeys will provide40,836m of office space, divided across36 floors with a public restaurant and baron the top three levels.
Comment:
Due to the large steel beams on thisproject, Combisafes standard attachmentswere not suitable, but they were ableto adapt the connection details of theSafety Net Fan to suit the size of the steel.A public footpath and local businessesneeded to stay open while constructionwas in progress, and Combisafe was ableto adapt the standard Safety Net Fans tobe erected to the hoardings. The SafetyNet Fans provided protection for passers-by from debris whilst letting in natural
light to the footpath. This enabled accessfor the public to remain open and localbusinesses to carry on trading.

productNew Innovative Combisafe
Multi Mesh BarrierPatent Pending | Art. No. 3300
The new Combisafe Multi Mesh Barrier (MMB) combines a Post and
Barrier in a single component, for simplicity, ease, and speed of
installation.
It has been designed to cost-effectively satisfy the performance
and containment requirements of EN 13374 Class A alone. The
installation uses a single fixing and overlap, and is therefore not
sensitive to accurate attachment spacing. The overlap is securedusing a Combistrap. This permits a wide range of varied applications
including curves and corners.
The system can use pre-cast sockets, clamps, or drilled fixings
as attachments. Once the fixing is made, the MMB can be safely
installed without having to access the edge, improving speed and
safety. Individual barriers can be opened, like gates by simply
removing the Combistrap, to permit access to the edge or for
loading through. They are then safely shut from behind the
protection of the Barrier. The large mesh size provides the required
level of containment, whilst also allowing operatives to reach
through and work without removing the Barrier.

Regulations and StandardsWhen used with either the Cast-In
Sleeve and Spigot, the Multi Clamp,or the Multi Foot, the MMB has been
tested to show compliance with all the
requirements of EN 13374 Class A. It
is therefore suitable for a vast range of
applications protecting the edges of
horizontal surfaces or those sloping up
to 10. Full performance information
is available through the technical
information sheets, user instructions,
and training courses.
Features and Benefitsn Reduces the number of components
on site.
n Weighs just 15kg, and so is readily
installed by a single operative.
n Can be safely installed without
approaching the building edge.
n Robust steel frame ensures durability
and ease of storage and stacking.
n Flexible overlap solution allows
varied centres, each unit protects up
to 2m of edge.
n Large mesh allows work through and
reduces wind load. Containment can
be increased by adding small mesh
overlays.
n Can be joined vertically to increase
height of the protection.
n Tight curves accommodated by
reducing the overlap.
n Can be opened individually topermit access to the edge, or
loading.
Step 1: Hold barrier with post
at far end, one barrier length
from the edge. Lever the post
up using the foot against the
near end and place the post in
the fixing.
Step 2: Swing the barrier away
from you, towards the edge of
the building to join the run of
barriers.
Step 3: Use Combistrap to tie
the barriers together.
Safe Installation
Combistrap|Art. No. 100335The Combistrap is a simple
webbing strap with a locking
buckle used to connect
adjacent MMBs. It acts like
a very strong, easily re-used
cable tie, 400mm long. The
Combistrap is specificallydesigned for this application, but it frequently performs a vast
range of other duties on a building site.
MMB Box |Art. No. 9550The MMB Box is designed to make transport and storage of the
MMB system efficient and easy. It holds 41 MMBs whilst being
stacked up to 4 boxes high, and when stacked the top MMB Box
can take 43 barriers. The MMB Box is readily moved around the
site by forklift or crane, and yet once empty it collapses to ease
return transport and space. It has been carefully sized to make
effective use of shipping container volumes.

New Steel Mesh Barrier StairRegistered Design | Art. No. 3226
Temporarily protecting the edges of stairways during
construction has previously been complicated and expensive. The
varied nature of the stairs, landings, and returns, often required
many cut tubes, sharp ends, and much purpose built protection.
The new Steel Mesh Barrier Stair (SMB Stair) has be designed
to solve these problems, offering a systemised solution that can
stand alone or integrate with either SMB system.
The SMB Stair provides continuous edge protection along
staircases, and at returns the Gap Closer ensures continuity and
protects any sharp edges. The landings are protected using the
SMB system, linking seamlessly to the SMB Stair. The SMB Stair
is supported on the adjustable posts, and can be fitted to any
angle of permanent or temporary stairway. It can also be raised
to allow access to work on the outside edge of the stair unit. The
SMB Stair is a single component, and can be fitted to either side
of the staircase.

Regulations and StandardsThe new SMB Stair, when combined
with the Safety Post and fitted with
either the Stair Attachment, Multi
Foot, or the Multi Clamp and Stair
Angle, provides an edge protection
solution that has been tested to confirm
compliance with the requirements of
EN 13374 Temporary Edge Protection
Systems, Class A. Full performance
information is available through the
technical information sheets, user
instructions, and training courses.
Features and Benefitsn Provides continuous edge protection
to a run of stairs.
n Complies with EN 13374 Class A
nToeboard is integrated for ease andspeed of installation.
n Can be lifted in place, using the
SMB Holder, to allow works to the
edge of the stair.
n Gap Closer ensures no sharp edges
at the return, and provides a toe-
board to the landing.
n Single panel component can be used
on either side of the stair.
n Smooth top frame to act as a
banister.
n Various attachments can be used,
depending on the width needed and
the location of holes.
n Fixings can be pre-installed in pre-
cast units for ease and speed on site.

tubes to fit specific stairways.
n Robust and durable framed units
for long life and great return on
investment.
Stair Attachment|Registered Design|Art. Nos. 1202/4202Using the Stair Attachment,
the SMB Stair can be placed
outside the staircase, so as not
to restrict the useable width of
the stair. This allows finishing
works to go ahead withoutremoving the edge protection.
Multi Foot|Registered Design|Art. Nos. 1290/4290Using the Multi Foot, the SMB
Stair can be placed on the
surface of the step, right at the
edge. This minimises the loss
of width and, with detailed
planning, can incorporate thepermanent handrail fixings.
Stair Angle|Art. No. 1510
Multi Clamp|Registered Design|Art. No. 1550Using these two attachments
restricts the width of the stair,
however installation is very
quick and no extra drilling of
fixings is needed.
Gap Closer|Art. No. 3227A simple and effective addition
to the SMB Stair system, the
Gap Closer is used to fill gaps,
voids, returns, and to protect
against sharp ends and edges.
It is a simple semi-stiff board
that will fill gaps between
100mm and 500mm. It is
held in place by 4 integral
Combistraps, and forms a
smooth curve between the
attached edges, protecting
sharp corners and solving a
vast range of edge protection
continuity problems.

Containment SolutionsNew solutions, and developments of existing systems,to increase the edge protection and level of containment.
As building height grows and construction programmes
shorten, the risk of equipment, people, and materials
falling or being blown out of a partially complete building
increases. This has led to a rising demand for floor to soffit
containment as part of the edge protection solution.
There is no European Standard or other consistent point of
reference to define what is an acceptable level of containmentor what should be contained. Full Height Containment is often
referred to, implying floor to soffit, but not clarifying the
containment level or mesh size.
Combisafe have, therefore, begun our Containment offering
by developing a new Combisafe Standard, to define what is
meant by Containment, and to clarify the conflicting demands
and variables included within our Containment Solutions.

The Combisafe
Containment StandardThe Combisafe Containment Standard
is available through the Combisafe
Technical Support. It does not replace or
conflict with any part of the EuropeanStandard EN 13374 for Temporary Edge
Protection, but is a complement to it.
The Standard covers applications and
performance criteria for Containment
Systems used in construction. It covers
those fixed to the building structure and
those relying on friction. It specifies
the various containment zones, the
containment area, and the containment
density. It does not apply to side
protection on scaffolds.
The Solutions | Patent Pending
The SMB Containment solution uses existing SMB components
to cover the containment area. Post extensions, adapters,
and specially sized SMB Holders are combined with existing
products to provide a certain containment density. Solutions are
bespoke, and include technical justification, wind loads, andinstallation instructions.
The MMB Containment solution uses the new Multi Mesh
Barrier System components to cover the containment area.
Additional spigots and screw jacks may be required, and the
containment area is covered in vertical units of 1150mm. In
view of the large mesh size of the MMB, the solution starts at the
250mm containment density. If applications require an increased
density, over lay materials can be used.
The Safety Net solution uses a safety net with a chosen mesh
size to provide the required containment density. This is normally
fitted to the soffit by remote attachment, and either joins with
the existing edge protection solution, or extends to the working
surface.
Combined solutions are also available, mixing the features
and benefits from other solutions to satisfy particular needs or
applications.

New Rear SupportAdjustableSignificantly increases the flexibilityof the Eaves Attachment AdjustableArt. No. 1741
The new Rear Support Adjustable allows the Eaves
Attachment Adjustable (Art. No. 1702) to be mounted
under the truss overhang, without requiring the normal
reaction from the building faade. The Rear Support

transfers the reaction load back into the truss overhang,
thus permitting use on a much larger range of overhangs,
and freeing the faade for finishing works.
The Rear Support Adjustable is indexed to position
the bearing point on the truss overhang, and also to
accommodate different roof slopes. The index pin is
captive on a wire lanyard, so it cannot be dropped in
use. The load distribution plate is also hinged to ensure
an even bearing on the truss, and has a nailing plate to
prevent movement under wind load.
Regulations and StandardsWhen used with the Eaves Attachment
Adjustable, the Safety Post, and the
SMB, the Rear Support Adjustable has
been tested to show compliance with allthe requirements of EN 13374 Classes
A, B, and C. It is, therefore, suitable for
a vast range of applications protecting
the edges of working surfaces sloping
up to 45, and up to 60 if less than
5m long. Full performance information

New SCAFFSTEPAluminium Version: Art. No. 24350010 l Steel Version: Art. No. 24990001
The SCAFFSTEP is a lightweight hop-up, enabling a Scaffolder to
erect or dismantle guardrails on the lift above, whilst protected by that
lifts ledger. The SCAFFSTEP is clipped onto the working level top
guardrail at any position, and its adjustable feet bear on the boards.
The integral ladder provides access to the platform, and the retractable
lanyard provides protection whilst accessing it. Once standing on the
top platform, the Scaffolder is protected from falling out of the scaffold
by the ledger of the lift above, now acting as his single guardrail. He
can then reach up in perfect safety and either attach, or release the
guardrails to that lift, which are now within reach.
The SCAFFSTEP can be used with traditional tube and fitting
scaffolding, and also with all types of system scaffold. The adjustable

New FiligreeAttachmentPatent Pending | Art. Nos. 1233/4233
Designed for use with pre-cast concrete slabs, the new Filigree
Attachment allows the Steel Mesh Barriers or guardrails to be pre-
installed at ground level and lifted in to position with the pre-cast
unit. Thus avoiding the need to work at height.
This innovative attachment is easily positioned during the casting
process, being placed independently, rotated into position on its
three feet, and readily secured to the rebar to prevent movement
during the pour. It will accept loading in any direction and does,
therefore, not require careful orientation. The pre-cast units are
transported with the pre-cut plastic sleeves removed, simplifying
stacking on the lorry, and reducing the stored height.
Once on site, the units are off-loaded and the sleeves, which have
been cut to suit the finished slab thickness, are inserted. The SMB
Posts and Barriers are quickly fitted at ground level in total safety,
and the slab is then lifted into position. Once placed, the lifting
chains can be simply removed as the edges are already protected
and the area is secure.
