System Overview

Lambda Transmitter LT 2/KS1-D/KS1-DK

The Lambda transmitter LT2/KS1-D/KS1-DK is a microprocessor-based

universal meter for directly measuring the concentration of O and the

combustible oxidizing components of gas (CO/H ), displayed as CO

equivalent (CO ), in combustion systems in the leaner than stoichiometric

range ( > 1), in conjunction with combination probe KS1-D.

It has a facility for direct connection to the integrated/combustion management

system and the ETAMATIC. This makes it possible to achieve improved control

mode to ensure optimized oil and gas combustion and automatic adjustment

of combustion to changing combustion conditions.

The Lambda Transmitter LT2/KS1-D/KS1-D also provides the following

functions:

- Measuring the temperature of flue gas and intake air and calculating

combustion efficiency

- Calculating and displaying CO concentration

- Load-dependent and fuel-specific limit curves / limit values

- O control

- Field bus connection

Direct (in situ) measurement of oxygen (O ) and oxidizing off-gas

components (CO/H ) in the crude gas up to 450°C (840°F)

No connection with infiltrated air (CO )

No gas preparation required, measurement direct in the wet flue gas

Setting time to 60% value (T ) < 10 seconds

with standard sampling CO < 2 seconds

Measuring gas temperature up to 300°C/570°F

The combination probe KS1-D/KS1-DK consists mainly of a zirconium dioxide

electrochemical cell.

It has 3 electrodes

an O -sensitive platinum electrode

a CO/H -sensitive electrode made from a platinum/noble metal alloy

a platinum reference electrode

The O measuring cell acts as an electrochemical concentration cell and generates a

d.c. voltage which is dependent upon the absolute temperature T and the logarithm

of the O concentration ratio or O partial pressure ratio at the reference and outer O

electrode.

If the sample gas is fed to the outer electrode and a reference gas with a known O

concentration, such as air for example (20.96%), is fed to the inner electrode, if the

temperature is kept constant, this will give the logarithmic relationship, shown below,

between the probe voltage US and the concentration of oxygen in the sample gas.

CO/H -2

sensitive electrode Combustible components are adsorbed as oxygen molecules at the

electrode and diffuse to the "three-phase limit" formed by measuring gas,

electrode and zirconium dioxide. In addition to the Nernst voltage U

determined by the oxygen content, the combustible components present

generate an additional d.c. voltage U / H through the sensor.

The sensor voltage is the sum of the two voltages U = U + U /H

(Fig. 1). Even with low concentrations of oxidizing gases such as H or CO,

the mixture potential is much higher than the O signal.

The mixture potential forms very quickly, T times of less than 2 seconds are

achieved. Sensitivity to O and combustible components can be influenced by

the temperature of the sensor. Lower sensor temperatures bring about higher

sensitivity to CO/H and lower sensitivity to O (Fig. 2).

The concentration of oxygen also influences the sensor voltage U .

With higher O content, the sensor voltage in the high CO range drops slightly

(Fig. 3).

However, the combination probe KS1-D may not be used when it is too cold or

else the oxidizing components will influence the O measurement (falsification

of the measurement value to lower values because of oxidation of the non-

burned flue gas components on the O electrode).

With higher O concentrations, more non-burned residue (CO/H ) oxidizes

before it reaches the 3 phase limit. The effect of sensor voltage U as a

function of the O content is shown in the graph below.

It is therefore recommended that the characteristic is calibrated specifically

for the system with a CO reference measurement.

Another indicator for non-burned residue (CO/H ) on combustion systems

is the dynamics of the sensor signal (U ). The higher the content of non-

burned residue, the higher the dynamics. The following figure traces the

rise of the sensor signal over the O value measured with a lambda probe

LS1 on a reference system (12 MW SAACKE gas burner)

with a small load.

Diagrams a) and b) show that, with a threshold voltage on all 4 systems, it is

possible reliably to detect when a CO limit of above 20 ppm in the flue gas is

exceeded. The threshold control offers a simple, continuous monitoring facility

for combustion systems and gives an alarm message if the burner

characteristic threatens to enter the range of an unacceptably high CO

emission, e.g. from going out of adjustment or clogging.

Diagram b) shows that burner control is possible.

The operating point of the burner control is no longer fixed or determined by

a characteristic field that is programmed in once, but is continuously

determined and re-set interactively during operation.

To do this the fuel/air mixture is changed in the direction of a lower lambda

value (less air, more fuel) until the combination probe KS1-D/KS1-DK shows

the start of incomplete combustion with a strong signal rise from the

CO/H -selective electrode and dynamics. From this point on, the fuel/air

mixture is now changed back a little in the direction of a higher

lambda value (more air, less fuel).

The optimal operating point is found. This process is repeated in cycles so that

the optimal operating points are always maintained even in unfavourable

weather- and system-related conditions.

If the burner characteristic shifts during operation and the combination probe

KS1-D/KS1-DK therefore detects non-burned residue (CO/H ), the operating

point is immediately moved in the direction of a higher lambda value

(more air, less fuel). If the operating point is re-established from time to time,

using the method described here, then slow changes of the burner

characteristic can be tracked.
