Transcript of Columbia Union Visitor Calendar, 2011

Prioritizing Whole Health

Long before it became popular to exercise, go to the gym or focus on your health, Ellen G. White, co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, wrote in The Ministry of Healing, “Pure air, sunlight, [temperance], rest, exercise,

proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power, these are the true remedies.”

These principles became the foundation for our philosophy of whole-person health and spurred us to develop ministries of healing. Today, thanks to the God-given vision of Ellen White, the Seventh-day Adventist Church operates more than 700 hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities around the world.

Two health networks are located right here in the Columbia Union: Adventist HealthCare has hospitals in Maryland and New Jersey while Kettering Adventist HealthCare is based in Southeast Ohio. Each day, in dozens of facilities, they carry out the healing ministries of Christ and emphasize the importance of whole-person health (learn more on pages 28-29). WHat about You?

What can you do this year to initiate or continue your journey to whole health? Maybe you can start an exercise program, drink more water or find new ways to experience the Sabbath. We all can do something to care for the temples God has given us. With commitment and consistency, you’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel about yourself and life in general. That’s why this year’s Visitor Calendar focuses on whole health and highlights the remedies Ellen White espoused. To keep you motivated all year, we’re also producing inspiring pod-casts, video tips by health experts and a special edition of our Columbia Union Story DVD (featuring our healthcare networks). We’re also publishing more on each month’s remedy in the Whole Health column on page 55 of every issue of the Visitor).

It’s time to prioritize whole health. Don’t put it off another day.

Courage,

Dave Weigley, Neville Harcombe, Seth Bardu Your Columbia Union Officer Team

through a series of phrases that can be found throughout the Scriptures, the character of

God is revealed. In various places we learn about who God is by the way He is described.

We learn that God will protect us:“I am your shield” (Gen. 15:1).“I am with you and will save you and deliver you” (Jer. 42:11).

We learn of the divine qualities of God:“I am holy” (1 Pet. 1:16).“I am merciful” (Jer. 3:12).“I am He who blots out your transgressions” (Isa. 43:25).

We learn of the way God has locked himself into a relationship with humanity in space and time:

“I am the First and the Last” (Rev. 1:17).“I am the God of your fathers” (Acts 7:32).“I the Lord do not change” (Mal. 3:6).

We learn of the compassionate character of God:“I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth” (Jer. 9:24).“I am with you” (Isa. 41:10).

These are statements that help us know who God is and that He wants to be made known.

SPeciaL caLLing, SPeciaL MiSSionStarted over a century ago, Adventist Health-

Care is built upon one unique way in which God is known, wonderfully expressed in this phrase: “I am among you as One who serves” (Luke 22:27).

From this phrase we take a special calling, expressed throughout our work and mission, and captured in our mission statement: “We demon-strate God’s care by improving the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing.”

This is at the core of all that we do. We believe that to serve is a sacred task to which we have been called. Through providing excellent healthcare in a loving and compassionate way, we make real the loving character of God.

Our work is an expression of our love for God and an example of the presence of grace in our world. Because of this, no challenge is too great or task too small to be used by God to dem-onstrate His love.

Each day at our three flagship hospitals, behav-ioral health hospital, rehabilitation hospital, Center on Health Disparities, home health services, center for infants and young children and numerous other affiliated facilities, we seek to live out this mission. Each of our 7,700 employees, 2,000 physicians and 700 volunteers contribute to the expression of God’s grace that is found in our institutions. The work we are given each day allows us to be the instruments of God’s grace, the hands and heart of His providence.

William G. “Bill” Robertson is president and CEO of Adventist HealthCare, headquartered in Rockville, Md.

one of my favorite stories in Scripture is in Mark’s Gospel (see

Mark 2:1-12). A large crowd is gathered around a single, small home in a little town. People

have heard that Jesus is in the flat-roofed house. Many of the people gathered are curious bystand-ers. But some are there because they have heard that Jesus can heal their afflictions. Off to the side, a group of four men carrying a paralyzed friend ap-proaches the house. Realizing that they will not be able to get near the door, they climb onto the roof and begin to dig a hole through it. That’s innovation!

Before anyone can realize what is happening, the men have lowered their friend into Jesus’ lap. The man is healed and walks away on his own strength.

entruSting uS WitH tHeir LiveSI love this story because it reminds me of

the work we do every day at Kettering Adventist HealthCare. When someone comes to one of our eight hospitals or 60 other facilities, they are looking for compassion and hope. They entrust us with their lives. They place themselves in our care—our laps!

Like the paralyzed man, they often have to overcome obstacles. But like the four friends, our 10,000 physicians, employees and volunteers make it possible for them to receive the compassionate care they need. And every encounter we have with a patient provides an opportunity to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

I’m both excited and humbled to be able to serve as a friend to people who need care, and I ask you to pray with us, and for us, as we work to further Christ’s ministry and mission in Southeast Ohio.

Fred Manchur is president and CEO of Kettering Adventist HealthCare, headquartered in Kettering, Ohio.
