Dual Enrollment Dual enrollment allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in classes at Columbia State Community College (CSCC) or at a Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT). Cost of enrollment may be covered through the Dual Enrollment Grant program funded by the Tennessee Lottery and administered by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. In addition to courses through CSCC, the following TCAT programs are currently available to high school students at the Northfield Workforce Development & Conference Center: Advanced Integrated Industrial Technology, Automotive Technology, Computer Numerical Control (Machine Tool Technology,) and Industrial Maintenance (Electrical, Machine Shop, Welding, and Sheet Metal.) Completion of at least 3 credits in one of these could count as a Focus Area for graduation purposes. For more information go to http://www.trainatnorthfield.org. CTE Student Organizations Professional organizations are an integral part of Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes. These organizations develop leadership characteristics through in-class activities as well as opportunities outside the classroom. COMING SOON: ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN MECHATRONICS!

Are you interested in obtaining your high school diploma and an associate degree at the same time? Beginning with the class of 2020, you can make that happen through an agreement between Maury County Public Schools and Columbia State Community College. (Approval is imminent.) But what is Mechatronics? Mechatronics is the integration of mechanical, electrical, and software systems to control diverse processes. (Think robots, artificial intelligence, and drones.) It is one of the fastest growing career areas in the world. From auto assembly to medicine to manufacturing, mechatronics drives quality control, reliability, consistency, and ultimately profitability. It is a field that is changing at a dramatic rate — driven by new technology, innovation, and global demand. All students have the opportunity to participate in Mechatronics courses. Students considering the Associate Degree program should meet with a counselor during the 9th grade registration process for further information about specific courses to meet the Mechatronics template. Students must begin in 9th grade to complete the rigorous requirements for an associate degree while in high school.

Advanced Placement Human Geography Prerequisite: Top 10% in Reading

Why take Advanced Placement courses? AP courses give students access to rigorous college-level work. AP students have the opportunity to develop

advanced research and communication skills; to tap their creative, problem-solving, and analytical potential; and to develop the time management and study skills needed for college and career success.

Colleges and universities value students who take the most challenging courses available at their school. Eighty-five percent of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions. AP courses show colleges that a student is intellectually curious, unafraid of hard work, and capable of learning the knowledge and skills expected of college students. Most colleges and universities offer college credit as well as placement into higher level courses with qualifying AP exam scores.

Research shows that students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to graduate from college in four years while most students take five or six years to earn bachelor's degrees.

An additional 5 points are added to a student’s grade for an AP course.

Who should take Advanced Placement Human Geography? AP Human Geography will be available to a select group of 9th grade students who have demonstrated the ability to be successful in college level work by scoring in the top 10% of their class in Reading. Parents should further consider whether their student has the maturity and dedication to participate in a college level class during this transition year. The class roster will be selected from registration requests. If not selected, students will be placed in World History & Geography. Enrollment (or lack thereof) in AP Human Geography does not affect a student’s future opportunities for participation in AP classes. CHS Juniors and Seniors may choose from Advanced Placement courses in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Studio Art.

Honors Classes

What is different about an Honors class? The State of Tennessee dictates that Honors courses must “substantially exceed content standards, learning expectations, and performance indicators.” This means that Honors courses are challenging, move at a faster pace, and go into greater depth. They promote higher level thinking skills, require additional study time, and are designed to maximize student potential. There are extensive, challenging reading and writing requirements. In math, strong computational and problem solving skills are critical. Independent study and outside research project(s) are required. As a result of these increased expectations, an additional 3 points are added to a student’s grade for an Honors course. Who should take an Honors class? Prerequisites are listed for Honors class placement. A student who meets the prerequisite test scores has the academic ability to be successful in the course, but a student’s commitment to hard work and the maturity to meet increased expectations are even more important. Parents should carefully consider the transition to high school and demands on a student’s time (such as extra-curricular activities or family obligations) in making this decision.
