ENCAUSTICS ON

CLAYWORKSHOPwith Laura Vernon RussellEncaustic painting is an ancient formof painting that uses melted beeswaxand resin mixed with colored pigments. It was used by ancient shipbuildersand potters not only for its preservativeand waterproofing qualities but alsofor its numerable aesthetic properties.

The nature of encaustic to both pre-serve and color caused it to be usedwidely on the stone work of both architecture and statuary. The whitemarble we see today in the monumentsof Greek antiquity was once colored, either boldly or delicately tinted. Interior decorative terra cotta workwas also painted with encaustic. Thisworkshop will explore the uses ofmodern-age encaustic on bisque-firedclay as an alternative to glaze. Students will learn to make encausticpaint, apply wax to 3-D surfaces andthrough the use of a heat gun and/or torch and small hand tools to manipulate the surface to create a finish that can be subtle or bold. Most supplies included in class fee.You will be required to provide some additional supplies.
