PRESSING ISSUESFORTHECOLTS

THIS SEASONBy Mike Chappell

[email protected]

The Indianapolis Colts head into another summer at AndersonUniversity, their third straight since a relocation from TerreHaute’s Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

But it’s unlike any before it.There’s no Peyton Manning. The longtime franchise corner-

stone was released in March and is “camping” with the DenverBroncos. Now, all eyes focus on rookie quarterback AndrewLuck.

So many familiar faces have scattered after being released ornot re-signed: center Jeff Saturday, linebacker Gary Brackett, tight end Dallas Clark, running back Joseph Addai.

Ryan Grigson is in his first year as general manager, ChuckPagano his first as a head coach.

Yet one thing remains constant: issues, critical ones fora franchise attempting to rebound from last year’s 2-14finish.

Here’s a look at a six-pack of pressing issues thatmust be addressed during the 21-day stay in Madi-son County that includes 15 practices open to thepublic:

Throw Luck into the deep endof the pool

Grigson used the first overall pick in theApril draft to bring Manning’s successor tothe roster. This is Luck’s time, his team. The Colts need to handle Luck in the man-ner they did Manning in 1998. Manningtook the vast majority of the repetitionswith the first unit during his rookie train-ing camp and played extensively in thefour preseason games. The best experi-ence is playing. After missing exten-sive time during the offseason due to

his academic responsibilities atStanford, Luck will be playingcatch-up as far as developing thenecessary rapport with a receiv-ing cast that includes veteransReggie Wayne, Austin Collie and

Donnie Avery and rookies CobyFleener, Dwayne Allen, T.Y. Hilton

and LaVon Brazill.

The focus of the Colts becomes quarterback AndrewLuck, who was the first overall pick in April’s draft.

Settle on an offensive lineand allow it to develop

The only clear holdover from lastseason seems to be Anthony Castonzo.Last year’s first-round pick is the lefttackle and charged with protectingLuck’s blindside.

New faces could reside at the otherfour spots: Samson Satele at center,Mike McGlynn at right guard, WinstonJustice at right tackle and Ben Ijalanaat left guard, if he’s able to wrestle itaway from incumbent Joe Reitz. Ijalanaalso figures to be the swing tackle, backing up Castonzo and Justice.

If Luck and the offense are to prog-ress and move the ball, the O-line musthold up its end. Poor quarterbackingwas a large part of last season’sineffective offensive production(15.2 points per game), but the 35 sacksand heavy pressure contributed. It wasthe most sacks allowed since 1997 (62).

Calling all cornersIn case you haven’t noticed, the NFL is a passing

league. Three quarterbacks surpassed the 5,000-yardmark in 2011, led by New Orleans’ Drew Brees and hisrecord 5,476. In the previous 91 seasons, only twice did aQB top 5,000 yards.

Nowadays, having a pair of quality cornerback startersisn’t enough. Defensive coordinators frequently are rely-ing on nickel (three cornerbacks) and dime (four) forma-tions. The Colts have one established corner: JerraudPowers. After that, it’s a collection of unproven talent.Several players must ratchet up their game.

Kevin Thomas, a 2010 third-round pick, worked asPowers’ sidekick during the offseason. The second start-ing job apparently is his to lose. He will be pressed by2011 sixth-round pick Chris Rucker, Terrence Johnson andCassius Vaughn, a promising third-yearplayer who was acquired in a tradewith Denver.

Accelerate the defensivetransition to the hybrid 3-4

The Colts no longer will frustratetheir fans by using a passive 4-3 (fourdown linemen, three linebackers).Pagano and defensive coordinator GregManusky will oversee an attacking 3-4group.

End Cory Redding, nose tackle Bran-don McKinney and safety Tom Zbikow-ski, all free agent acquisitions, arefamiliar with the approach. All playedfor Pagano in Baltimore last season.

But it’s a brave, new world forvirtually every other player on thatside of the line of scrimmage. Thatincludes Dwight Freeney and RobertMathis, perennial Pro Bowl ends whonow are standing up as outside line-backers. Manusky will maximize the

pass-rush skills of Freeney and Mathis, but they’ll stillhave to adapt.

Align the crowded backfieldPagano made two things crystal clear during the offsea-

son. One, the Colts are going to be a power running team. Two, Donald Brown is the presumptive leader.

A more reliable running attack will ease the load onLuck and a defense in transition. That area has been whol-ly unreliable. Since 2008, the Colts rank No. 32 in theleague in rushing yards per game (88.2) and per attempt(3.7) and No. 31 in attempts per game (23.6).

That won’t get it done. Brown needs to stay healthy andbe consistent. He rushed for 645 yards and averaged 4.8per carry last year, both career highs. Brown should bepushed by 238-pound Delone Carter and 217-pound rookie

Vick Ballard, both of whom appear idealfor the bruising approach. Free agentpick-up Mewelde Moore is a candidate tobe a third-down option.

Make special teams specialPunting and kickoffs? No problem

with Pat McAfee. Place-kicking? In thecapable hands of Adam Vinatieri. Afterthat? Anybody’s guess.

It’s new special teams coordinatorMarwan Maalouf’s charge to tightencoverage and find an explosive returnman, or two. In 2011, the Colts rankedNo. 32 in kickoff returns, punt returnsand covering kickoffs, a terrible trifecta. They ranked last in the league in start-ing field position after a kickoff. Returncandidates include Hilton, Brazill,Vaughn, Moore, Jabin Sambrano andQuan Cosby.✭ Call Star reporter Mike Chappell at(317) 444-6830.

» The Colts won’t practice on thefirst two Wednesdays, Aug. 1 andAug. 8.

» There won’t be an autographtent. No more fans showing up at5 a.m. to get in line and not watch asnap of practice. But players will beinformed that signing autographsafter public practices is a priority.

» If the Fifth Street/UniversityBoulevard parking lot is full, over-flow parking is available for thefirst time at the Anderson Munici-pal Airport on Ind. 32. Free shuttleservice will be provided. For moreinformation, call (765) 648-6292 or(765) 639-4611 or click: http://
