Contrasting or Toning?Using a colour wheel like the one opposite is a great way to look at what colour works best for you. You could opt for bold, contrasting colours, or choose more subtle tones to suit your room.

Contrasting (complementary colour scheme)Sometimes thought of as a daring solution, contrasting colours is a fantastic way of creating vibrancy and energy. To do this, pick two opposing colours on our wheel. You might think they clash, but you’ll be surprised at how stunning they could look side by side, perhaps with one as your feature wall.

Which Colour is right for you? Colour can say a lot about a person. It can also say a lot about your home. Bright and bubbly, dark and exciting, or cool and mysterious? The Colour @ Home range definitely allows you to bring out your personality through your paint choices.

Some people love to set a consistent mood throughout the house, using multiple shades of one colour. Others prefer each room to have its own individual style. Whatever atmosphere you want to create, our colour wheel will help pinpoint the perfect combinations.

Tester Pots

Visit the Wickes website We have an online version of our colour selection tools to make it even easier to choose a colour scheme. If you already have something in mind, you can shop by colour. Then, using our click and collect service, order your paint through our website and pick up your chosen colours at your nearest store.

Toning (analogous colour scheme)Our colour wheel will also show how to use different shades or tones of one colour to bring a sense of harmony to your room. Start by picking a colour, then find darker and lighter shades of that colour. Bringing them all together will give you a variety that’s soothing rather than striking, and it’s a great way to make the most of a colour palette that you love.

Because our Colour @ Home paints are available in several finishes, don’t be afraid to apply the same contrasting and toning colour schemes to woods and metals too. Skirtings and architrave can add another dimension to your colour scheme so don’t forget top coats when planning your room.

When it’s time to transform your home, experiment with new colours to design something fresh and interesting, and see just where Wickes can take you.

Designing anything means testing out ideas to see what works and what doesn’t. That applies to interior design too, and our Colour @ Home tester pots can help you experiment before making a final decision.

We know that choosing colours can be tricky and most people find it hard to dive straight in. Our tester pots are a great way to see how a shade looks in your home, under different lighting conditions, without committing to a whole wall of colour.

Try painting a selection of colours side by side to find the most suitable combinations. Our colour wheel will guide you towards the toning or contrasting options that are right for you.

COLOUR SELECTING

TipPaint tends to change colour as it dries. So

if you choose a colour from a colour card, don’t

worry if it looks darker immediately after you’ve

applied it.

If you want the best results, you need to spend time preparing your walls, ceilings and woodwork.

Fill and smooth any cracks or holes. We have a number of treatment options for problem surfaces. Wickes Basecoat will help create a perfect base to work with.

Before you can paint, the surfaces should be clean, dust-free and completely dry. Wash them down with detergent or sugar soap, rinse with clean water, then leave them to dry.

Emulsion can be painted over most wall coverings, as long as they’re in good condition and firmly stuck down. However, if your old wallpaper is textured then be aware that this texture will still show through the paint.

You’ll need to remove any blistering and fill in blemishes on newly-plastered surfaces. Fluffy white alkaline patches can be rubbed off with a piece of hessian or worn coarse glass paper.

When painting onto new plaster, first use Wickes Paint for New Plaster, and allow the wall to dry properly before the new colour is applied.

Before you emulsion, use one of our primers or base coats that are specifically designed to prepare your walls for painting. If you opt for an oil-based paint, use a primer suitable for plaster.

Preparation, Preparation, PreparationYou’re probably looking forward to seeing your room spring to life in fresh new colours, but don’t be tempted to skip the essential preparation. Start by emptying the room to make enough space to move around easily.

The right tools for the right jobBrushes Choose a brush size appropriate to the area you need to cover. A large brush is ideal to use on walls where a roller isn’t suitable, choosing a smaller brush for those tricky, hard-to-reach places. For best results, use a synthetic bristled brush for water-based paint and a mixed bristle brush for solvent-based paint.

Ready to paintAlways paint the ceiling first, followed by the walls, then window frames and door frames, leaving the skirting boards until last. This lets you work from the top down, making it easier to remove any splashes that might otherwise be harder to clean up.

Dealing with bare plaster Preparing your surfaces

TipWickes Pink To White paint is a fantastic way of making

sure you get the best coverage. It’s almost impossible to paint white on white without missing a patch here and there, but this remarkable paint goes on pink

and dries white, so you can easily see any areas you

might have missed.

Use dust sheets to cover the floors and any furniture that can’t be removed. No matter how careful you are, paint spills and splashes can happen.

Keep a bucket of water and a sponge handy to wipe splashes from woodwork as they happen. Some colours may stain white or light-coloured gloss paint.

Use masking tape to cover areas that need protecting. When painting woodwork, mask off the walls. When painting the walls, mask off the woodwork.

Preparing your surfaces

A 2" brush is a good size for painting any flat surface area. As well as painting walls, this can be used for larger areas of woodwork such as doors and skirting boards.

A smaller 1" brush should be used for painting close to the edges of walls and ceilings. This size brush is also ideal for mouldings and door frames.

A narrow-headed ½" brush is perfect for very tight spaces, smaller areas and fine detail on your window frames.

Cutting in brushes with angled bristles are designed for painting at the edges of an area. They are ideal to use when painting window frames with lots of corners.

Rollers A medium-pile roller should be used for smooth surfaces. Rollers with a longer pile are better for textured surfaces. Select a 9" roller to cover walls and ceilings quickly, using a brush or mini roller sleeve for smaller areas. When glossing doors, a small roller sleeve that will take gloss paint is great for achieving a smooth finish.

Roller tray inserts can save you time and hassle. When the painting is finished, simply throw away the plastic insert, leaving a clean tray to use next time.

TipFor an even finish, when

using more than one container of the same

colour you should intermix the contents

before application.

Tip Wash the roller before

using it for the first time. This will remove any loose manufacturing particles

and give you a much better result.
