With the support of so many Colosoul crew it is incredible the impact that applies itself to the pulse of everything we do around here. Great work team and if you’re thinking about coming onboard, be ready to join the Colosoul revolution. We are not just a magazine, we are about empowering young people and giving them opportunities. So got something to say? Send it in and we will indulge in it and of course make the most of your very important words of wisdom. See you at MYM Theatrical Fashion Show – don’t want to miss it! E- NEWS Colosoul livened up the Basement in Myer Perth on Saturday the 13th of June with an awesome live show by Dialekt and Joe Black, followed by the winner and runner-up from the Future DJ competition, Aspect and Kyran Smith. The turntables started spinning at just after midday, and already there was a large crowd gathering. The spectators were evenly divided between devout Dialekt fans and curious city-goers eager to see what all the commotion was about. By the time the performances started, walking through the area proved to be a difficult task. The crowd went wild when Dialekt took the stage and prizes were given away through a ‘name that song’ contest. Alongside Ineffable, and with Joe Black behind the decks, Dialekt pumped out a crazy performance, featuring songs from his upcoming album and plenty of crowd favourites. Once that was all said and done, the winner of the Future DJ competition, Aspect from DYP Electro, took to the turntables and started blasting out a crazy party mix of electro house, with plenty of deep, wobbly basslines and crazy drops. A small technical issue hindered the set for a moment, but Aspect powered on and played through it nicely. Once the crowd had been given enough to dance to, it was time to chill out a little. Runner-up to the Future DJ competition and regular at the Perth Habitat club nights, Kyran Smith, started playing some smooth, deep house that allowed punters to come up and talk about Colosoul and what was going on. The set shifted between relaxing and funky, providing plenty of tunes for people to nod their head to and rounding the day off nicely. A big thankyou must go out to Dialekt and his crew, DJ Joe Black, Aspect and Kyran Smith, as well as Melissa Sulcs at Myer and Trish and Chloe and everyone else from Colosoul, who all volunteered their time to help make the day a success. Colosoul livened up the Basement in Myer Perth on Saturday the 13th of June with an awesome live show by Dialekt and Joe Black, followed by the winner and runner-up from the Future DJ competition, Aspect and Kyran Smith.

Alongside Ineffable, and with Joe Black behind the decks, Dialekt

pumped out a crazy performance, featuring songs from his upcoming album and plenty of crowd favourites.Once that was all said and done, the winner of the Future DJ competition, Aspect from DYP Electro, took to the turntables and started blasting out a crazy party mix of electro house, with plenty of deep, wobbly basslines and crazy drops.

Colosoul Magazine is collaborating with the Perth Fashion Festival to produce a fashion parade unlike any other. Entitled Make Your Move, the show will be held on the 7th of September and will feature the work of several exciting young designers and artists.

The fashion show will reflect Colosoul’s main objective – to balance coverage of important social issues with support for all the latest talent in the areas of fashion, music and art. The target audience for the parade will correspond with Colosoul’s own key readership of 18 to 30 year olds, with an expected attendance of 400. This will include a range of VIP clientele, who will comprise well-known members of the Western Australian music and fashion communities, and sponsors of the magazine.

Our fashion parade will be something out of the ordinary, as we want to give our supporters not just a great fashion show, but also an experience to remember. The theme for the night will be “Darkness into Light” and will involve choreographed dancing, poem reading, DJs, graffiti artists and local bands.

Tickets will be priced at $12 for adults or $10 for student concession, and can be bought online through the Colosoul website.

The event will showcase the work of local designers Jonte Pike, Emma Batten, Phemie Cacavas, Alexi Alcroft, Madeleine Tucker and Lara Parry, as well as students from

Bentley TAFE, whose designs will be shown on the runway.

Rather than a collection of ready-to-wear clothing, the show will feature ‘wearable art’ that will complement the evening’s fantasy theme. Both DJ Dialekt and Boys Boys Boys! will be providing music to accompany the performance.

The artists involved in the show will be Yolanda Stapleton, Gav Fielding and Megan Isabella Guise, with their work available for purchase through a silent auction on the night.

In addition, Megan Isabella Guise will be helping to produce Colosoul’s new range of t-shirts, which will be available for purchase both at the event and through Colosoul’s website.

The fashions show is not only about promoting and encouraging local Western Australian talent, it is also an opportunity to raise money for the Esther Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organisation that helps women overcome substance abuse, self-harm and abuse. The foundation aims to empower women to become role models in the community.

The show will be an excellent opportunity for Colosoul to strengthen its relationship with local businesses, and to give back to the youth community in Perth. We are hoping that the success of this fashion show will allow us to turn Make Your Move into an annual event.

Priera Russell (Alexi Alcroft), 22, Fashion Designer for ‘MYM’ Fashion ShowInspired by seduction and the 1950s, Priera Russell has made two collections for the Make Your Move fashion show in September. Priera hopes her designs will capture the inner glamour of women and the essence of sexuality. Priera’s creations will demonstrate her design versatility; from mainstream ready-to-wear to haute-couture pieces from her upcoming label Skankihoo Designs.Born and raised in Perth, whether through painting, performance or photography, Prtiera has always loved to create. In her fashion designs, these artistic endeavours all came together through what she calls a “natural progression”. Priera loves to use tactile fabrics with surface textures that “cling to and caress the skin” and rich colours and patterns that leave her classy designs “dripping in sex appeal”.In 2008, Priera won entry into the student division of the Perth Fashion Festival and was even chosen as a finalist in the prestigious Hand and Lock Embroidery Competition in London. Her haute-couture wool range will be featured in the upcoming ‘Touch of Wool Project II’ in this year’s Perth Fashion Festival and her designs will be included in the 2009 Perth Royal Show.

MAKE YOUR MOVE THEATRICAL FASHION SHOW

Emma Batten, 24, Perth – Fashion Designer for MYM Fashion Show.Originally from Melbourne but raised in Perth, Emma Batten started her love for design at a young age, sewing scraps of material together using her mum’s machine and making little bags for fun. Now studying fashion design at Swan TAFE, she has gathered inspiration for her designs from her travels to New York City and from the lights and colours of the New Year celebrations in Times Square.Having spent several months working on her collection, Emma’s love for silk will feature in her designs for the Make Your Move fashion show – about 700m of organza ribbon, in fact. With her work previously displayed in the West Australian and having taken part in the Fragile Fashion Parade, there is high anticipation for Emma’s contribution to the MYM show in September.

Lara Perry, 22, Perth - Fashion Designer.Lara Perry’s creative career first began at Edith Cowan University in Geraldton, where she studied visual arts, though after returning to Perth, she realised that her passion lay in the field of design. Having almost completed her studies, Lara has already had her designs featured in X-Press Magazine and, with her graduation show in February, Lara now has her sights set on entering the fashion industry. “I am serious about fashion,” she says, “I have no doubt that this will be my career.”Lara loves to work with silk and techniques such as embroidery, but has even used food dye and teas to customise her fabrics.Lara is producing several unique designs for Colosoul’s Make Your Move show in September, an event that she hopes will be a “stepping stone into the industry” that she eventually wants to be part of. “This show is going to be so beneficial to me,” she says, “because as it is art based it is still in a realm where I am comfortable.”In her free time Lara also likes to put her interest for art into words, writing short stories that she says help to inspire her work.

Perth based designer Pauline Ho is to showcase her new designs for summer through ‘MYM’, her established new label Starring, displaying versatility of casual and glam style for women, day and night. The season’s looks are inspired by elements of art, travel, rock, and life, creating high quality clothing without the dramatic price tag through t-shirts, flashy singlets, dresses, and a variety of skirts and shorts of all styles. With Starring having debut last winter, Pauline adds charity to her designs, with part of the proceeds go towards the Mpumaleo Day Care Centre/Orphanage in South Africa.

Last month Colosoul Magazine was lucky enough to be involved with Curtin University’s Guild day. Our friendly volunteers on the day chatted to students, handed out cool free stuff and most importantly made students aware of Colosoul’s mentorship program. Volunteers explained how the mentorship program gives students the opportunity to gain work experience in the media and communications industry while studying at university.

Everyone was very impressed with the professionalism of the magazine and was amazed students produced such great quality work. It was great to show how supportive we are of students and get them excited about Colosoul’s initiative. Guild day was a great success for Colosoul and we hope to continue and pursue this relationship with Curtin University and their promising students.
