There are lots of adults looking after students, making sure they are doing the right thing. One of the things that most schools do is bring in drug dogs to check for drugs or other contraband. We recently did just that at the high school. The dogs are trained to hit on illegal drugs, prescription drugs, over the counter medication, alcohol, tobacco including vapor cigarettes that contain nicotine, gun powder and explosives. During this search we did have several “hits”. Most of the time it was for over the counter medication but we did find some illegal drugs and an almost empty beer bottle. Please have a conversation with your chil- dren about the dangers of illegal drug use, underage drinking and tobacco use. If you have a student that drives check their vehicle occasionally, check your child’s backpack too. Our goal is not to punish students but to educate them on the effects of the choices they make. We will be increasing the number of drug dog inspections for the rest of the year too! Hopefully together we can educate our children to make healthy choices! Another concern is cell phone usage while driving both by students and adults. Many times I have seen students texting while driving almost as soon as they pull out of the parking lot. Distracted driving is an accident waiting to happen! One parent suggested that everyone stop using their cell phones when driving near the school. When driving by the school in the morning or afternoon it is extremely important that we all focus on the task at hand “driving safely and watching out for pedestrians and other vehicles”. Keeping it Safe

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Recently the topic of safety around the schools was brought up. For the most

part schools are one of the safest places in most towns. There are lots of

adults looking after students, making sure they are doing the right thing. One

of the things that most schools do is bring in drug dogs to check for drugs or

other contraband. We recently did just that at the high school. The dogs are

trained to hit on illegal drugs, prescription drugs, over the counter medication,

alcohol, tobacco including vapor cigarettes that contain nicotine, gun powder

and explosives. During this search we did have several “hits”. Most of the

time it was for over the counter medication but we did find some illegal drugs

and an almost empty beer bottle. Please have a conversation with your chil-

dren about the dangers of illegal drug use, underage drinking and tobacco use.

If you have a student that drives check their vehicle occasionally, check your

child’s backpack too. Our goal is not to punish students but to educate them

on the effects of the choices they make. We will be increasing the number of

drug dog inspections for the rest of the year too! Hopefully together we can

educate our children to make healthy choices!

Another concern is cell phone usage while driving both by students and

adults. Many times I have seen students texting while driving almost as soon

as they pull out of the parking lot. Distracted driving is an accident waiting to

happen! One parent suggested that everyone stop using their cell phones

when driving near the school. When driving by the school in the morning or

afternoon it is extremely important that we all focus on the task at hand

“driving safely and watching out for pedestrians and other vehicles”. The

ing on the south at Westgate Way all the way to Edens Lane and Ropers Way

FLORENCE— In the spring of 2012, the Florence Drama Program built a

house to put on a quaint production of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Throughout the

next three years, the house has been used time and time again, and now it’s

practically in shambles. But now, coming up in May, that small house will

be replaced with an entire city.

On May 13th-15th, the Florentine Players will be performing the most fa-

mous tragedy of all time: ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare. Alt-

hough this play is typically portrayed as the most epic romance of all time,

Drama is here to break that stigma. The focus of the production is the ridic-

ulousness of the feud and how destructive pride can be. The directors also

hope to shed a light upon the fact and Romeo and Juliet were not truly in

love but merely infatuated with one another (just ask Friar Laurence). An-

other twist Florence is bringing to this legendary production is the setting.

Commonly known to take place in 16th century Verona, Director Derk

Schmidt decided to move the action to modern-day Detroit. Why? Possibly

because he is from Michigan, possibly because of a classic rock song, pos-

sibly because of his affinity toward Coney Island hot dogs, but you’ll have

show up to find out.

Although this is all the information the Chronicle can disclose at this time,

there are a few more details that the public needs to know. First and fore-

most, anyone who is able to attend the production must do so. If you don’t

consider yourself able due to a previous engagement, change your plans.

This take on ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is like none Florence, nay, the world, has

ever seen. One would be a fool to willingly miss the greatness scheduled to

unfold.

Many people in the Florence school and community don’t realize how

much work goes into the spring production. For the first three months of

the school year, Drama focuses on its integral fundraiser: the Annual Pie

Social. Directly after the Social takes place, they begin work on their

Spring play. Taking only a mere week and a half to help with Cafe Choco-

lat, drama thespians spend an impressive five months of endless rehearsal,

line memorization, blocking, and set building, solely for the spring perfor-

mances. Thus, a task with such an immense amount of work put into it is

bound to be amazing.

The last detail that should be taken into account is the vast difference be-

twixt this year’s performance and previous years. From the ‘Wizard of Oz’

and ‘No Place Like Nowhere’ to ‘A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s

Court,’ Drama stuck to silly comedies that pleased all audiences. Last year,

they took on ‘Antigone,’ a famous tragedy by Sophocles. Any who attend-

ed can testify that it was like nothing the school had seen due to its com-

pletely original musical score written by director Derk Schmidt, the amaz-

ing lighting skills by senior and four-year drama student Jenny Barnhill, or

simply the story itself. Many viewers asked drama members how they were

going to top ‘Antigone’ the following year. The answer was simple: Shake-

speare.

Drama is truly taking on the royalty of theater and they encourage all mem-

bers of the Florence and surrounding communities to come and take this

journey with them. The small house of drama everyone used to know is

gone, and it would be a shame if anyone were to miss the building of their

amazing city.

The production will take place in the New Gym this year because, quite

frankly, it wouldn’t fit in the old one. Seriously. Showtimes are Friday and

Saturday, May 13-14, at 7 pm, and Sunday, May 15 at 2 pm. Tickets are $5

or $2 for students and FCS staff. If you do not attend this play, a plague a’

both your houses. Your houses!

MUSIC NOTES

Florence Carlton Middle School Parents Association is look-

ing for officers for the 2016-17 school year!

The Florence Carlton Middle School Parent Association is

comprised of parent volunteers who work hard raising funds

for our middle school kids. All the money raised by the

FCMPA goes toward providing for middle school activities

such as dances, 8th grade promotion and classroom supplies

not already funded through the school.

We have had strong leadership and participation for the past

several years, but now it’s time for the next generation of

Middle School parents to take over and help our students have

a wonderful middle school experience.

If you’re the parent of a 5th – 7th grade student who is interest-

ed in being involved, we ask you to please attend our final

monthly FCMSPA meeting on Tuesday, May 10th in the

school library at 6 pm. We will be electing officers and are

looking for individuals willing to help lead our amazing com-

munity of kids, teachers and parents.

And check out our Florence Carlton Middle School Parent As-

sociation Facebook page for updates and information about

this and many other activities the FCMPA is involved with.

“Hat Day” is coming Friday, May 6th!

The F/C Middle School Parent Association is sponsoring it’s

last fundraiser of the year by encouraging all Florence students

to participate in “Hat Day.” For $1 you can wear your favorite

hat for the entire day. The FCMPA will have a table set up in

front of the high school office on Friday morning from 7:45

am to 8:15 am. Pay your buck and wear your hat for the

remainder of the day.
