COLORBOND® steel is one of the worlds most advanced
pre-painted steel products for the building and construction
industry.
COLORBOND® steel offers architects, designers, builders
and owners a versatile, lightweight, strong and aesthetically
pleasing solution for almost any type of building and environ-
ment.
COLORBOND® steel is really three products in one system. It
has been designed to provide the excellent Strength of the
steel base, the Corrosion Resistance of zinc-aluminium
alloy coated ZINCALUME® steel and the superior Aesthetics
of an advanced paint system.
Other products may look the same, but they don't always
match the performance of COLORBOND® steel.
Cross Sectional View of COLORBOND® steel
A product of intensive research and design, COLORBOND®
steel was introduced in 1966, and even today continues to be
the benchmark for the industry.
The painted surface is not just paint; it is a paint system - the
agglomeration of a four-stage process that delivers long life,
superior anti-corrosion performance - and above all superior
aesthetics.
The four stages begin with a ZINCALUME® steel base which
has a chemically applied conversion coating. An epoxy primer
is then baked onto the surface, after which the topcoat is
baked on.

Product RangeCOLORBOND® steel coils conform to AS/NZS 2728 and are
typically supplied in 12 standard colours with base metal
thickness ranging between 0.40 mm to 0.80 mm and strip
width between 940 mm and 1220 mm. Special requirements
in different parameters can be offered. Protective film is
available as an optional extra.
COLORBOND® steel is manufactured using high quality
steel. In general two grades of steel are used for roof and wall
cladding applications, which are G550 and G300.
G550 steel grade is also referred as 'High Strength Steel',
where the minimum Yield Strength of steel is 550 MPa, while
G300 steel grade is referred as 'Soft Steel' where the
minimum Yield Strength of steel is 300 MPa.
In general high strength steel (G550) is preferred for roof and
wall cladding applications because of its inherent properties
and benefits over soft steel. G300 is used where high
formability is required.
Superior Paint TechnologyAround the globe COLORBOND® steel has gained a
reputation as the best colour coated corrosion resistance
product, specifically for roof and wall cladding applications. It
adds life to your building with long lasting aesthetics.
The proprietary paint system of COLORBOND® steel gives it
long life, superior aesthetics and excellent corrosion
resistance.
The unique combination of resins and inorganic pigments
used in COLORBOND® steel provides it with the ability to
resist colour change longer than most pre-painted
alternatives in most environments.
COLORBOND® steel is tested for all criteria required for
colour coated steel products to perform in the external
environment and is designed to be successful under
ultra-violet exposure, high temperature, humidity and salty
atmosphere.
Resistance to Colour ChangeThe fading colour of pre-painted steel is typically caused by
exposure to UV radiation in sunlight and other external fac-
tors that are beyond our control.
The unique composition of the paint system consists of
stable resins and inorganic materials. Stable resins unlike
regular resins do not break down as a result of UV radiation,
thus preventing fading, chalking, while inorganic materials
e.g. iron oxide are renowned for their stability when exposed
to UV radiation.
The paint system provides COLORBOND® steel with the
capability to withstand fading of colours for a longer period of
time as compared to most pre-painted alternatives.
The unique quality of COLORBOND® steel is reinforced by its
ability to weather evenly to provide consistent colour across
the exposed surface. As a result of superior colour
performance, COLORBOND® steel is unsurpassed by any
other pre-painted steel available in the market.
Superior Paint AdhesionThe coating used for manufacturing COLORBOND® steel has
been formulated to resist cracking and peeling during forming
and pressing at the roll form machine.
The high degree of ductility does not lead to a softening in
the paint film hardness. Even after roll forming,
COLORBOND® steel resists peeling and flaking for much
longer in comparison to any other product of the same
category.
It can withstand conditions of high speed wind, hail, falling
branches and flying debris. Its top finish superbly resists
chipping, cracking and peeling.
Water absorption through the paint film may result in blister-
ing and delamination. The special binder in COLORBOND®
steel provides resistance to this phenomenon, thereby
ensuring that the paint film is intact for long.
Design FlexibilityCOLORBOND® steel is lightweight and strong, it provides
maximum flexibility and its extensive range of colours and
profiles ensure truly individual solutions.
It's also easy to erect, and gives long life and low mainte-
nance. Its easy formability and bending property opens new
horizons to the thoughts of architects.
Leading architects attest COLORBOND® steel for its virtually
limitless design possibilities. They use it for everything from
award-winning modern homes to modern industrial sheds or
innovative interior designing.
It is no surprise that COLORBOND® steel continues to be the
preferred option for numerous landmark projects in the
building and construction industry.
Thermal EfficiencyWhatever be the climate, COLORBOND® steel is the smart
and energy-efficient choice. A roof and wall made from
COLORBOND® steel can result in less heat radiated into the
building compared to other commonly used materials.
The reflectivity and low thermal mass of COLORBOND®
steel, combined with insulation, makes it a cost effective and
energy efficient roofing solution.
Environment FriendlyBuildings using COLORBOND® steel can be installed in a
shorter period of time. Unlike conventional building practices,
there is no mixing or wastage at site.
Hence, there is no strain on the local flora and the buildings
blend easily with the environment.
COLORBOND® steel contains no lead, making it a suitable
option for water harvesting.
Another advantage is that COLORBOND® steel is recyclable.
DurabilityZINCALUME® steel is chosen mainly as the substrate for
COLORBOND® steel, for most roofing and wall cladding
applications, because of its superior ability to resist corrosion
upto four times longer than galvanised steel of equivalent
coating thickness.
By combining the strength of its steel substrate, with the
corrosion resistance of superior coating, COLORBOND®
steel ensures the aesthetic beauty of the finished product will
last for many years to come.
In South Asia, the environmental and weather conditions vary
from one extreme to the other. COLORBOND® steel has
proved to be an ideal solution for tropical climates, capable of
withstanding extreme environmental conditions, and giving
long lasting aesthetical looks to buildings.
At the same time, it also provides a safe, secure and durable
barrier against pests and intruders.
Tested for Assured Performance
COLORBOND® steel undergoes numerous tests for
evaluating its performance in different environments.
COLORBOND® steel is subjected to not only
laboratory test but is also tested in the external environment
to evaluate its corrosion resistance and durability as
compared to other pre-painted steel.
Panels of COLORBOND® steel and competitive products
were placed at a test site in severe marine conditions at
Bellambi Point, Australia. After 9 years of continuous
exposure, COLORBOND® steel shows minimal corrosion
while apparent visual corrosion effects could be seen on
the other pre-painted steel.
COLORBOND® steel has emerged as superior in corrosion
resistance again and again, so why use any pre-painted
steel, when you can have the best and technically proven
product for your roof and wall cladding applications.
Easy to Maintain
COLORBOND® steel should be handled carefully to avoid
damage to the surface.
The process of taking care starts from the packaging to
transportation to storage to processing to again packing and
delivering to the site. It is also essential to adopt proper
installation practices.
Regular washing with water on areas that are not exposed to
rain will enhance the expected life and the attractiveness of
the painted finish for a longer period of time.
Touch up paints should be avoided as it creates patches of
uneven colouring. If a sheet is badly scratched, it should be
replaced immediately.
Any debris (e.g. swarf, surplus fasteners) should be carefully
removed at the completion of work each day, to minimise risk
of localised corrosion.
Applications and End-Usages
COLORBOND® steel is the preferred option for construction,
especially where aesthetics is valued equally with long-life.
Roofing
From classic corrugated sheeting through contemporary
profiles to architectural panels, COLORBOND® steel is the
natural choice for roofing applications.
Being light weight, it reduces the amount of framing required.
Longer spans enable economic truss design.
Wall Cladding
COLORBOND® steel is an attractive, durable and economical
wall cladding solution for any environment.
In addition to the practical benefits and aesthetic appearance,
it also acts as an impenetrable barrier to intruders and pests.
Gutter, Flashing and Accessories
To ensure equal durability for gutter, flashing and acces-
sories, it is recommended that these are manufactured out of
the same product system used for main roofing and wall
cladding.
CompatibilitySome precautions as mentioned below should be followed to
get the best from COLORBOND® steel:-
• Don't allow contact with incompatible materials, which
include lead, copper, monel, bare steel, stainless steel
(except COLORBOND® Stainless steel), green or
chemically-treated timber (like CCA or tanalith treatments),
wet or dry concrete, soils, vegetable matter, any material
which will inhibit normal exposure to the atmosphere
• Don't allow discharge of rainwater from incompatible
materials onto COLORBOND® steel products
• Ensure that supporting members and fasteners are
compatible and have similar life expectancy
• Do not mix COLORBOND® steel with 'same colour' pre-
