From the CWEF Board . . .

The Colorado Women’s Education Foundation Board of Trustees had a very exciting year packed full of changes and projects.

We shortened our name to reflect the changes that have occurred this past year to the BPW organizations on the national, state, and local levels. We’re excited that our new name is shorter and easier to recognize and remember. A new brochure was designed to help with our marketing efforts.

There were 14 scholarship recipients this year who were awarded a total of $13,125 in scholarships. As with every year, we have so many deserving applicants that we turn down and only wish we had more funds to award. Our new recipient liaison program is helping us stay in better touch with our scholarship recipients.

The first annual “Legacy of Learning Fundraiser” was held this year with huge success. The fundraiser will be held each year featuring a distinguished speaker coupled with a social event. Our next event is scheduled for April 11, 2011 with guest speaker Temple Grandin, PhD. Details will be on our website.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all our supporters and contributors of this past year. Without your support we

cannot carry out our honorable endeavor of helping strug-gling Colorado women complete their education. “Paying It Forward” is what all of us can do to help these women and make our communities a better place. We believe that education is the key.

Please remember us in your charitable giving. No amount is too small.

With Special Thanks . . .After 3 years as President of the CWEF Board of Trustees, Joyce Neville has passed the torch to our new President, Colleen Miller. Joyce has been a member of the board for over 5 years total and continues to serve as an active trustee. We thank you, Joyce, for all your leadership, for your perseverance, and for caring about our mission.

Jenne Trembley is a financial advisor with Spinnato, Kropatsch, Clinard, Schuelke & Asso-ciates, a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services. Prior to moving to Colorado, she was Vice-Chairman for her local parks and recreation commission and lent her support as both a volunteer and corporate sponsor for Wom-en’s Resource Center, Women’s Health Source, and her local SPCA. In Colorado, she continues to leverage her relationships to aid non-profits that she cares about including Colorado Wom-en’s Education Foundation and Assisted Cycling Tours.

Jenne sought a position on the CWEF Board of Trustees because throughout her life she has recognized the struggle women face in their pursuit for a valuable education and a success-ful career. She is continually challenging herself through education, and currently has a degree from the University of Pennsylvania and four financial service designations: Certified Finan-cial Planner™ Practitioner, Chartered Financial Consultant®, Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor®, and Certified Divorce Financial Ana-lyst®. Jenne is excited about her role as CWEF President-Elect, and plans to use her leadership and management skills to support the Board of trustees in their mission of helping deserving Colorado women.

NEW TRUSTEES JOIN CWEF

The CWEF board welcomes two new trustees and the abun-dance of experience, talent, and energy that they bring.

Phoenix Sagen is a self employed busi-ness owner with ItWorks!! Global, a health and wellness company with global reaches. Her community involvement has included being a volunteer at Judie’s House lending bereave-ment support for grieving children and teens, and helping with fundraising projects through the Longmont Moose Lodge for the local community including education for children, medical sup-plies and support for the elderly. She is also a supporter of the local humane society as well as doctors without borders.

Using her degrees in Business, Phoenix is dedi-cated to helping women learn, practice and apply the necessary skills needed to be successful in business. She is very excited to join the Board of Trustees to be able to help other women com-plete their education faster and with less frustra-tion. Her own struggle to pay for her education has fueled her desire to help others who face the same challenges.

Be alert to give service. What counts a great deal in life is what we do for others.

RECIPIENTS FOR FALL 2009 AND SPRING 2010

Sandy, 35, of Aurora, single with three chil-dren, is studying Business Administration at The Women’s College of the University of Denver where she maintains a 3.12 GPA. The reason she has done volunteer work with Project Home-less is to give back the same sort of help that she had previously received from “The Coalition for the Homeless”.

Jessica of Fort Collins, 31, is married with two children, and is earning a Associate of Arts at Front Range Community College. Social Work is her chosen career because, in her words, “my life has presented many obstacles that I have had to overcome and I am sure that I can be of some help to those who are in need.”

Jayne, 32, of Colorado Springs is a divorced mother of two. Sociology and Political Sci-ence are her areas of study at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. She intends to become an advocate for domestic violence victims. While maintaining a 3.0 GPA, she also volunteers at TESSA, an organization that helps women and children of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Erin, 32, of Colorado Springs is a single mother of one, working toward an Associate’s degree in Elementary Education at Pikes Peak Community College. She maintains over a 3.0 GPA and ulti-mately plans to complete her BA at the University of Colorado. Her community volunteer work includes The Head Start Policy Council, Women of Courage, and a Brides of Christ participant.

Deborah, 40, is working toward a Bachelor degree in Construction management at Colorado State University. She intends to also receive cer-tification in green building and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). While maintaining a 3.23 GPA, she supplements her studies by volunteering with the National Center for Craftmanship.

Barbara, 33,of Greeley is a divorced mother working on her Associate’s degree in Second-ary Education (Math). While caring for her six children, she incredibly maintains a GPA of 3.84. Upon completion of her AA degree she intends to work on her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Northern Colorado. Pursuing a career in the education field is a natural for her since she does volunteer work in that area and has also home-schooled her own children for a few years.

The Colorado Women’s Education Foundation awarded $13,125 in scholarships to 14 deserving Colorado women. Each round of scholarship reviews presents new, moving stories of women stuggling to complete their education. The diffi-cult economic times definately showed in the scholarship applications this year, and the empathy for these women made the award choices very difficult.

Meredith, 28, of Fort Collins, holds a 3.59 GPA and is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a double major of Sociology and International Studies at Colorado State University. She is heavily involved in community service including Victim’s Assistance Team, Key Service Commu-nity Partnership, and Food Not Bombs.

Mercy of Lakewood, 26, sustains a 4.0 GPA in her course of study at Emily Griffith Opportunity School to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. In order to reach her goal of becoming a nurse in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the divorced mother of two plans to continue her education and ultimately pursue her BS degree in Nursing.

Elizabeth of Fort Collins, 25, is earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Northern Colorado. The single mother of one is a native Coloradoan and has a 3.76 GPA. She intends to make a positive contribution to the quality of health care that is offered in the com-munities on the Front Range. Her volunteer con-tributions include Program Energy, Big Thomp-son Watershed Forum, and Turtle Lake Refuge.

Stephanie, is enrolled in an Associate of Sci-ence program at the Community College of Den-ver. She has aspirations to eventually become a Physician’s Assistant. Her volunteer work of mentoring teenagers to graduate is very fulfilling to her.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2009-2010

The Board continues being frugal with operating expenses. The use of free Google tools for non-profits is a huge savings for CWEF. Those tools include: a “Donate” button, check-out service for our fundraising events, use of the “Google docs” collaboration environment, and on-line advertising for scholarship applicants, volunteers, and dona-tions. LOOKING FORWARD TO 2011Our next Legacy of Learning Fundraiser will be a dinner event the evening of April 11, 2011 and will feature Temple Grandin PhD, as guest speaker. Dr. Grandin is a CSU professor, bestselling author, and autism advocate whose life’s story was recently made into the Emmy Award winning HBO movie, “Temple Grandin”. Check our website in 2011 for more information, ticket purchases, and sponsorship opportu-nities.

How can we possibly express our gratitude to all of the sponsors, committee members and individuals whose work and dedication went into making the First Annual Legacy of Learning Fundraiser such a tremendous success? We love and appreciate you all.

It was the perfect early summer evening at the home of John and Joyce Neville. A wooded yard with a gurgling stream bisecting the back perimeter provided the perfect backdrop. The enthusiasm was palpable among the near one hundred guests in attendance who were treated to the jubilant, rhythmic marimba music provided by Low Flying Knobs while cocktails and appetizers were served. Guests included prominent local entrepreneurs and business people as well as scholarship recipients Denise Hurtado (2006) and Jenelle Martin (2008).

Featured speaker Carlotta Walls LaNier spoke of the courage that it requires to change minds and the influence of the ordinary he-roes among us. She read several poignant quotes from her book, “A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School,” that recounts her journey to becoming the first black girl to graduate from Little Rock Central High School. Hearing Ms. LaNier speak and experiencing her strength was inspiring to every-one in attendance. “Carlotta’s presence and presentation made the deepest impression ….Her dignity and grace…moved me to tears. “ Said Carol Grever, long time sponsor of CWEF. “Having a [speaker] of such stature definitely made the evening memorable.”

The presentation of $1350 by Boulder BPW President Nancy Chin-Wagner was another highlight of the evening. An additional $4500 was raised by the event; which will go toward future schol-arships. Thank you for your generosity. We also send a special thanks to hosts John and Joyce for their patience and support in the creation of a truly wonderful evening.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINES

Application deadlines are May 31 for fall semester awards and Oc-tober 31 for spring semester awards. Scholarship funds awarded by CWEF will be applied to the recipient’s account at her school. Click here for an application form and more information.

What You Can Do: Every organization benefits from the energy and skills of those who rally around it . . . from individuals completing the day-to-day tasks to supporters spreading the word on its behalf. The Colorado Women’s Education Foundation has grown because of the enthusiasm and hard work its supporters have displayed over the years. Our future growth is dependent on the continued support of individuals and orga-nizations that believe, as we do, that education is the key to transforming lives. Below are ways you can support the Colorado Women’s Education Foundation. Find one that works for you and begin writing a success story of tomorrow. H Volunteer: Add your name to our volunteer list. We are always in need of individuals and organizations willing to help with tasks

large or small. We will call on you to share your valued skills as the needs arise.

H Connect Trustees to Interested Corporations/Foundations: Does your business or place of employment offer a matching gift fund? Do you know of a business or foundation seeking a partnership with another with a similar mission? A single introduction can be the first step toward creating a valuable partnership and strengthening the work of several organizations.

H Become a Pledging or Lifetime Scholar: Pledge to give $100 or more per year for up to ten years to become a Pledging scholar. With an accumulated gift of $1,000 or more, you will become a Lifetime Scholar.

H Give the Gift of Education: We all know how hard it can be to find just the right gift for someone’s birthday, anniversary, graduation or wedding. A donation to the foundation is a great way to honor a friend, and it’s a gift that will last a lifetime. We also welcome gifts in memory of a loved one.

H Be a Foundation Liaison: CBW/BPW members, become that person “in the know.” Get regular updates about Foundation activi-ties. Share foundation news and information at your local meetings or by providing articles for your Local’s newsletter.

H Encourage Women You Know to Apply for a Scholarship: The Foundation’s scholarship program is as strong as its demand. We continue to receive a record number of applications each year. Our goal is to provide more and larger scholarships to women throughout Colorado. As the demand grows, so will our ability to increase our support.
