a sparkling Mozart Serenade and Franck’s most famous orchestral work frame this delightful program led by world-renowned conductor Claus Peter Flor. Concertmaster yumi Hwang-williams and principal cellist Silver ainomäe team up in Brahms’ powerful and enchanting concerto, a star-studded combination.

beeTHoven maSS in CHumperdink Prelude to Hänsel and Gretelbartók Suite from The Miraculous Mandarinbeethoven Mass in C

Humperdink’s fairy tale overture and Bartók’s scandalous, sensual ballet are definitely from this world. Beethoven’s reverent Mass takes us on a spiritual journey that only the great master could envision.

raCH 3 & SCHUberT’S greaTrachmaninoff Piano Concerto no. 3Schubert Symphony no. 9, “the Great”

ukrainian phenom Valentina Lisitsa debuts in rachmaninoff’s fiendishly difficult score. Schubert’s 9th symphony is next - lyrical, heroic and monumental.

beeTHoven’S eroiCaHaydn Symphony no. 22, “the Philosopher”kodaly dances of Galántabeethoven Symphony no. 3, “eroica”

Haydn’s charming symphony employs a muted tick-tock effect, evoking the image of a philosopher deep in thought while time passes by; and Kodaly’s dances are a deeply personal homage to the place where he lived as a toddler with his family. Both are a prelude to the main work on the program: Beethoven’s heroic symphony which was first dedicated to napoleon, after which the disillusioned composer scratched his dedication off the work’s title page.

the music of young american Kevin Puts is lyrical, sentimental and moving. Principal clarinetist Bil Jackson reprises the concerto, the first movement of which was inspired by the families of u.S. military personnel killed in Iraq and afghanistan. Set to texts of walt whitman, Vaughan williams’ romantic, larger than life choral orchestral work evokes the sea in all its majesty and fury. the young 30-year- old composer created an awesome work of searing intensity and remarkable ingenuity which receives its Colorado Symphony premiere.

olga Kern returns, this time in Grieg’s timeless concerto, whose first phrase is among the most dramatic ever penned. the Symphony then performs her countryman Shostakovich’s 11th symphony, a work so descriptive it is sometimes dubbed “a film score without the film.”

Henry and me

this animated film starring richard Gere and Cyndi Lauper receives its western premiere at the Boettcher Concert Hall.  a young boy battling illness is taken on a magical adventure by a stranger named Henry. on their journey, the boy meets new york yankee legends, both past and present, who give him lessons about baseball and life.  Film composer Charles denler and the Colorado Symphony demonstrate how a score comes to life prior to a full screening of the movie.

THe devil’S fiddler

the phenomenal Gypsy fiddler roby Lakatos is a rare musician who defies description.  a scorching virtuoso equally comfortable performing classical, jazz and his own Hungarian folk idiom, Lakatos and his ensemble join the Colorado Symphony for an explosive mix of authentic Gypsy music with great themes from all around the world.  with superb panache, roby, his ensemble and the Symphony offer an electrifying program.

SHUffle

this concert ties together vast musical styles with the threads that connect them in the ‘spaces between.’ we’re changing the old rules as you knew them and embracing the reality that people shuffle back and forth between Baroque, Classical and romantic to Jazz, Pop, Broadway and Indie music. In examining their differences we’ll discover exciting commonalities. Hold on for a fusion concert for every musical taste.

leTTerS from mozarT

resident Conductor Scott o’neil leads us through Mozart’s incredible life while reading sparkling translations of letters he wrote to family and friends accompanied by his most famous compositions.  what was Mozart really like?  Here is the composer at his most intimate and unguarded, expressing feelings about life, love, music and the world around him. this journey of discovery is a must for anyone who has ever loved a work by Mozart, from the deceptively simple “eine kleine nachtmusik” to his towering, magnificent requiem.

beeTHoven’S eroiCa revealed

Beethoven’s masterpiece is deconstructed in front of your eyes with stunning visuals, musical sound bytes and clever anecdotes, including revealing information about the composer’s relationship with napoleon, to whom the symphony was originally dedicated.  Heroism and an idealized vision of redemption through love permeate the great master’s work.  then hear the entire “eroica” with a renewed understanding and appreciation for the art that was and will always be Beethoven.

WHo killed TCHaikovSky?

Former Music director Jeffrey Kahane returns to examine the root causes in the turbulent emotional life that led to this russian master’s early demise.  It is a fantastic journey through the ‘best of the best’ of the composer, ending with death just weeks after the completion of his last composition, which became a requiem. Kahane leads the Colorado Symphony, performs some of the great composer’s piano works and gives insight into the brilliance of this “rock star” of his time, a man without any of the freedoms we enjoy today.

flamenCo!

Flamenco lies at the very soul of the Spanish Gypsies, often a misunderstood and misrepresented people.  Flamenco, an art form which epitomizes self-confidence, style and pride, is lovingly presented by the Colorado Symphony with world-renowned guitarists, singers and dancers.  Classical compositions inspired by Flamenco find a place alongside folkloric gems on this one-of-a-kind concert presentation.
