Colorado Region - Board of Director Elections byColoradoRegionSCCA

The Colorado Region Board of Director Elections will be held this month. Every year in September, three BoD member’s terms expire so we elect three new BoD members.

Voting will be conducted using the HELIOS electronic voting system. You will be receiving an email from HELIOS with instructions very soon. Check your junk mail folder, and if you have not received test email from HELIOS contact Ed Shuler at [email protected] or 303-910-0147.

This years BoD members whose terms are expiring are Bob Melvin, Ed Kajko and Ed Shuler. Redline wishes to extend a hearty THANK YOU to Bob and the two Eds for helping steer the club through some rough waters. The

introduction of the Majors, while a tremendous success from the standpoint of Runoffs competitors, has presented some challenges for the smaller regions.

Bob Melvin helped Colorado Region develop an event budget in an effort to maintain the regions fiscal viability. The racing budget will help guide the Colorado Region for years to come.

Ed Shuler and David Muramoto took on the task of updating the Redline. Redline is the Colorado Regions monthly Magazine. Kudos to Ed and David for a job well done. Keep an eye on the Redline, Ed and David have a lot of ideas on how to improve Redline even more in the months ahead.

Ed Kajko has been working on ways to attract more volunteers. Ed has some terrific ideas that we hope to implement in the next few seasons that will attract and keep volunteers.

This years candidates are:

Ed Kajko I have been a member of Colorado Region as a corner marshal since 1981. My experience in that role extends from our Regional, National and Majors races to professional races and has expanded to include international experience. Many of you have seen and talked to me at the races and if you’re a driver I may have helped you after an incident. For other F&C marshals I am the one who approves license upgrades in my role as Divisional F&C Admin.

Although not elected to the board after the elections three years ago I agreed to take the place of a board member who couldn’t complete his term. Consequently I have served on the board for three years and if elected will continue to serve for another three years.

Ed Shuler Current Occupation:

Process Control Engineer for Honeywell Intl.

Leadership History:

Current Colorado Region SCCA Board Member. I served as the RMDiv Flag and Comm Divisional Administrator. I also am the COR Web Master, Redline Editor, and COR Equipment Manager.

In an effort to recruit in the F&C specialty, I developed a relationship with the Rocky Mountain Vintage

Volume 9 September 2016 RedlineRacers, the Motorcycles Racers Association as well as the Rocky Mountain Region Porsche Club of America. We are recruiting volunteers from these clubs through the Rocky Mountain Sidewinders corner worker group.

I served as president of the Caring Adults/ Responsible Educators (CARE) Board at Peace with Christ Christian School (PWCCS). My daughter attended PWCCS from preschool thru the eighth grade. The CARE Board is the Parent/Teacher Association for the school. As president, I was responsible for organizing the purchase and installation of playground equipment and sod for the baseball field. During my term, new fund raising procedures were implemented resulting in the most successful fundraising year in the history of the school. I am versed in Roberts Rules of Order and keenly aware of the requirement that due diligence be exercised by all members of the CoRegion BoD.

SCCA Participation:

In the mid 80s I was a member of the Milwaukee Region where I worked in Flagging & Communication and briefly campaigned a Lola FF. I moved to Colorado in 1989. I became a member of the Colorado Region in 2007 and have been actively working in F&C.

At the end of the 2008 season, I was asked, by the RE, to become the CoRegion equipment manager and assist Kevin Carter with Course Marshal duties. My daughter was heading off for college, opening up more time for my hobbies, so I accepted this challenge. I currently campaign a FV with Andrew MacDougall.

I would appreciate your vote for the Colorado Region Board of Directors for 2017-2019 Term.

Jay A. Buerger – Denver Native My passion for motor sports and the need for speed has been in my mind and soul since I was 12 years old. I began racing quarter midgets out at Jefferson County Fairgrounds in the mid 1960’s. In the 1970’s I raced in the 125cc motorcycle class in all of the Motocross events in our region. In the 1980’s, for several years, I raced a ski jet boat and a 5.0 Liter Hydroplane Boat, then sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association (APBA)

SCCA Participation:

I have been a member of the Colorado Region SCCA club since 1993. In 1993 I started out as a driver in the Club Ford class. I drove a 1970 Lola T-200 for about two and a half years with RMVR and SCCA, then moved to our club exclusively. I then transitioned into the FC, CC and FF classes and drove a Van Diemen RF-91 for many years.

I am currently a Steward in Training (SIT) and love it. I now see things from several points of view and not just from a drivers point of view. I am amazed at the amount of work and the number of club members and volunteers that it takes to host a racing event! I am in awe of the long term talent and the dedication of members that we have in our club.

As a new club director, I’d like to take a survey of members and get a consistent feel for what you want to see happening at our events. I want to listen to the membership and understand what your concerns are and what ideas there may be to generate some new participation in all areas of our club. What will work to generate some new interest with drivers, volunteers and general Colorado SCCA club membership? Social media, free radio spots, car dealership awareness events, etc…. I am all ears at this point. I know, some say it has been tried before, but I think we can try again.

As we all know, Denver is now a large metropolitan area. Working together, over time, I think we can enlighten our Denver residents and take the “Secret Car Club of America” and make it the “Colorado SCCA Car Club of America” that every motorsports fan, volunteer and driving participant wants to be a member of.

Professional Occupation & Leadership History:

• Managing Broker & Owner of Buerger and Company Real Estate since 1981.

The Good Old Days byBobWilson(Editor’s note: we’ve been fortunate to reprint many of the articles the late Bob Wilson wrote for Redline Magazine and others in the past. In one of the final articles we have, Bob recounts the tale of a corner crew known as the ‘Leaping Lizards’ who were inventive enough to raise some corporate sponsorship for themselves and mischievous enough to raise some hell—while getting the job done--in the 60’s and 70’s)

Another time, Ila and I inadvertently became part of the legend of the team. The Lizards were working turn 11 at Road Atlanta. This was the infamous bridge turn, with steep banks and dangerously close confines. I was assigned as safety steward that day, so we drove our little ‘ol Winnebago to the top of that hill and parked. Did I mention it was raining? Well, rain it did, all day long. It was one of those pelting, chilling rains, which never let up for a minute. No matter what kind of rain gear you had on, you got wet- and cold to the bone. Ila wisely stayed in the Winnie with the furnace on. Shortly before noon, she invited one and all into our little motorhome. She had water heating for some cup-o-soup, hot chocolate, coffee and what-have-you. So, shortly afterwards, we had 17 Lizards (besides Ila and I) packed into our 17’ Winnie! All were eating or drinking something hot and warming and drying out a bit. It’s impossible to know how much—without being there- the effect this had on those poor, bedraggled souls. After lunch was over, a much-revived group trouped out and back to their station. For once there was no joking around, they were all genuinely grateful.

Many years later, one of the Lizards, Jim Johnson saw us and said: “I’m still grateful for you saving our lives that day out on turn 11”. Well, Jim, Ken & Sue, E. Tom, Tony, Wookie, and all the rest whose memory has faded from this old head, you are so very welcome, and thanks for the stories.

I’ll close with another little story about these guys. We were at Lake Afton for another race years later and I overheard another worker from Wichita complaining about the Lizards to another F&C chief.

The chief heard him out and then said: “I know they clown around and screw up a lot, but if I was upside down and on fire, I’d rather be on their corner than anybody else’s!” And you can quote me on that! It’s my sad duty to report that E. Tom Newcomer passed away last winter. A great storyteller, comrade, friend and good guy- we miss him and, I know, so do the Lizards. I don’t know if the Leaping Lizards still exist, but for a while, they burned brightly. They were the best.

2016 Honda Civic Touring Coupe: Turbo Power with a Soft Edge byDavisMuramoto

In one of the quickest turnarounds in recent automotive history, Honda has released a completely new Honda Civic line for 2016. Consumers didn’t care much for the previous Honda Civic, as the ninth generation boasted such a conservative image. So the engineers and designers went back to the drawing board, creating a totally new model line for 2016 that features crisply tailored styling much more in line with Honda’s futuristic thinking. One result of all that effort was the 2016 Honda Civic was voted by the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press as the 2016 Car of the Year during the Denver Auto Show in March.

The bright blue 1.5T Civic Touring Coupe I sampled utilizes styling that borrows heavily from the Civic Concept car introduced at Detroit in 2015. It seems to be part of a trend among automakers to reduce the time from a pure concept to an actual production car. The lines of this tenth generation coupe are rakishly executed, from the chrome Honda bull nose up front to the rising flanks and on to large sculpted C-shaped taillights; it is indeed a stylish car. The interior is much the same, although Honda elected to use a horizontally oriented dash, with a conventionally mounted instrument pod. Sit behind the nicely padded leather steering wheel and push the start button to activate the LED three-gauge cluster before you. The center gauge has a virtual tach with digital speed displayed just above it and analog gauges flanking it (for coolant temp and fuel levels).

Driving the Civic Coupe is a study in contrasts. The new 1.5 turbo engine is paired with Honda’s latest CVT tranny and really pushes the 2,800 pound car when the throttle is nailed. With just a hint of wheelspin,

9

Page 10: Colorado Region BoD Elections GO CECIL GO! 2016 Honda ... · 2016 Honda Civic Touring Coupe: Turbo Power with a Soft Edge 9 ... 41 Michael E Pettiford 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Colorado

Volume 9 September 2016 Redlinethe single turbo spools up rapidly, producing 174-hp at 6K RPM. Torque is strong as well, with 162 ft-lbs coming on at a ridiculously low 1,600 RPM level. Mileage figures for such a strong powerplant are stellar: 31 city/41 highway/35 combined. But as I drove this Civic Coupe on roads and highways I found the handling didn’t match either the styling or the power delivery. While the Civic remained nimble in slower and sharper turns, at higher speeds body roll became pronounced as the swaybars were overwhelmed by the weight transfer and lateral movement. Side-to-side transitions were also similarly affected, as the electronic steering assist quickly became overwhelmed by terminal understeer. And having started my racing career in the Honda Prelude, CRX and Civic, I admit to being a bit disappointed by how this tenth gen coupe handled in transitions and on quick off-ramp exits.

Perhaps this disappointment is ill-founded, however, as this Civic Coupe is a standard Touring grade model, with no sporting or “Si” upgrades. The Si version should be out later this year, with a six-speed manual rumored to be on tap as well. The Civic Coupe certainly had a good ride, with the suspension soaking up road irregularities and smaller potholes with ease. The four wheel ABS brake system was up to the task and the car comes standard with a plethora of safety features. One feature in particular deserves mention: signaling for a right turn or lane change activates a camera located in the passenger side mirror. The full-color image displayed in the center console is striking and certainly ensures you’ll know when it’s safe to change lanes! But it’s also a bit of a distraction, as it can lead to the driver staring at the screen rather than scanning the road ahead. After all, the 2017 Civic Coupe is still defined as a compact car and how hard is it to turn your head for just an instant to check that blind spot? You’ll still need to do just that on the driver’s side, where no camera resides.

Volume 9 September 2016 RedlineThis is a factor Honda and other car builders must face as they build ever-increasing driver aides into their vehicles: when do these technological features augment our driving skills, and when do they actually decrease our ability to use them? It’s a difficult balancing act, and for this $26,960 (MSRP with shipping

and handling included) vehicle, it’s a question that left me perplexed. But for consumers, one answer became very clear: they like the new Civic! Honda delivered 32,952 Civics in July, setting a new sales record for the hot-selling model.

Karl McColl ‘back in the day’ taking a victory lap.

As the season winds down, naturally we reflect and assess the state of the corner marshal ranks along the front range. While the ranks continue to get stretched by ever more and more events, there are some encouraging signs.

We had a group of 4 college students from the Colorado School of Mines SAE program come out and work the Majors and the HyPR Hot Regionals. They said they had a great time, and look forward to returning next season. Not counting the CSoM SAE group we picked up about a half dozen other new workers and saw the return of some of the old crew. I saw Dave and Diane Hegeman, Steve Vigil, Alex Tomalino and I think I recall seeing John Bonvouloir at the track this season.

Ed Kajko received George Fairer’s corner gear from George’s wife. We got his whistle, scanner, jump suit, as well as several white shirts. It’s been two seasons since George’s passing. I miss George. He was a great corner marshal. Even now, when I show up at the track I look for George’s red Toyota pickup with the little camper, half expecting to see his smiling face.

The Quest byEdShuler

The Air-Cooled Sprints at the ‘It’s Miller Time’ Regionals

After the Freedom Sprints, even though the car ran well, we decided to make several adjustments. We adjusted the brake pedal so that under full compression, the pedal plane was in line with the accelerator. This would dramatically improve the ability to perform the heel-and-toe maneuver required to downshift. We also checked the rear alignment, there is 1/4 inch toe in on the rear wheels. We also did the usual prep work: Change the oil, adjust the valve lash and give it a thorough cleaning. We also purchased a new set of Hoosier rubber.

Andrew has never run on sticker tires, so we decided to use the Nuby take-offs on Saturday, and put the stickers on for Andrew on Sunday.

It has been said that you can tell how your weekend will go within the first 15 minutes of arriving at the track. You will have forgotten your helmet or the car will fall off the trailer during the unload process. or…

During my FF days back in the 80’s, I arrived at BlackHawk Farms only to discover a suspension rod-end had broken during transit to the track. I earned the moniker of ‘The guy whose car breaks on the way to the track’ from my fellow struggling racers. Luckily, I managed to put a spare suspension piece on the car, But in the morning warmup session, I was involved in a collision which broke the radiator. After finding a local radiator shop that agreed to solder the hole in the radiator I thought the weekend troubles were over. I entered the track for Sunday morning qualifying, only to have the engine go ka-boom after 10 laps. A lifter had seized, broke in two and bounced around inside the case causing all kinds of havoc.

That’s amateur racing.

When we arrived at the Pueblo Friday evening, for some unknown reason we decided to re-torque the wheel studs. Well of course one of the front wheel stud holes stripped! AAARRRGGGHHHH… Here we go. It’s a 2 hour drive back to Denver to get a spare. Several of the other FV guys were arriving, so we decided to see if we could borrow a front drum. Nuby had one and he graciously let us borrow it. He also advised us to back off on the torque values. We were using 65 ftlbs, Nuby advised us to use 55 ftlbs.

My niece and her two kids were in town, so I had some spectators at the track for the Saturday races.

Everything went well except, while trying to improve my speed through turn 10, I turned in toward the apex cone expecting the car to drift a bit. I was still not going fast enough because the car tracked true and I nailed the cone square on the nose with a loud THUNK! I couldn't see it anymore. I hoped I had knocked it out of the way. The cone got wedged in the front suspension and I drug it all the way to turn three, where I spun and sent the cone flying. The marshals rounded up the poor cone and gave it to me as a souvenir of the weekend. Thats my cone on the right side in the photo. The racing was super fun. I was dicing with a couple of the Mortimer boys.

Volume 9 September 2016 RedlineNuby and Flinn Lazier were there so I finished in 3rd place in class. The car ran great and I improved my times each session. My Niece and her kids had fun. I was sad to see them go. Perhaps someday I’ll take the car to Road Atlanta or Roebling Road, so they can see me drive again.

We put the ballast in, attached the new tires and settled in for the night. Sunday came and Andrew attacked Pueblo Motorsports Park. He was faster than me and easily handled the Mortimers. ‘Animal’ paid Andrew a nice compliment. I was heading back to help Andrew get out of the car after one of his races, and Dave commented “the kid is quick!”

Andrew had his issues with the cones too. He managed to collect a cone at turn seven (that’s it on the left in the picture above. Another souvenir!).

We had a good turnout, All the FST kids were there, Flinn, and Nuby and five of the RMVR FV-1385s.

It was hot, but what a great weekend.

Next up: The HyPR Hot Regionals.
