IN HER DELIGHTFULbook, In Your Space: Personalizing Your Homeand Office, Jenette Kahntalks about her passion forphotography, and how, asan impoverished collegegrad, she laid eyes on aEugène Atget print andknew she just had to haveit. Once she brought theprint home and discoveredhow incredible it is to livewith great art, she writes,“the damage was done. Iwas on the path of truecollectors.”

I resonate with her experience. My small (butgrowing) art collection isby no means impressive, but I adore living with eachpiece and am always onthe lookout for the next gem. When I find it, I’m willing to give up dinners out, weekend getaways and even new shoes in order to buy it. What drives such sacrifice? The pieces I’ve collected make me smileevery time I see them.

But beyond the simple joy a work of art can bring, even the mostmodest of collections tells the story of its owners. After all, if you’vechosen a work that speaks to you, how can it not speak of you at thesame time?

The art in this issue’s featured homes do just that. Eclectic, quirkyand definitely impressive, these collections turn rooms into captivating, personal living spaces.

If you’re inspired by the art in these pages, then you’re in luck: Ithappens to be art-festival season. So plan to attend a few this summerand just take it all in. Introduce yourself to the artists. Ask questions. And look—or better yet, listen—for a piece that speaks to you. Thenbring it home and experience sheer joy.

SOMETIMES WAITING CAN BE A GOODthing. So testify Michael and Gail Folwell, who spent12 years living in their Boulder home before they werefinally ready to undertake a major remodel. Over theyears the couple paid attention to how the sunlight—and moonlight—moved through the house. Theybecame familiar with the best places to admire theFlatirons. They noticed how each season affected thehome, and which areas tended to be cooler andwarmer. Along the way, their family expanded toinclude a son, a daughter and several canines.

“As our family grew, we knew we wanted to add someprivate areas and workspaces,” says Gail, an accomplished artist who was named one of 25 leadingsculptors by Southwest Art magazine in 2001. “The original house was a classic California ranch style, butsome bad additions had been built over the years andwe knew we wanted to tear those down and get backto the essence of the house.”

The couple didn’t have to go far to find an architect.Michael is the principal of Michael Folwell

WE WERE JUSTWONDERING...How did you two meet?

“We were introduced at a Vail gallery

opening,” Michael says. “We went on a

mountain bike ride the following day

and discovered that we not only had a

bunch of mutual friends, but we lived in

the same Denver neighborhood.”

What’s your secret to a happy

coexistence with kids and pets

in a stunning house like this?

“We designed the home to be

approachable and livable, not like a

museum,” Michael says. “After all, the

home belongs to the kids, too, and we

always want them to feel like it’s theirs.

We used some materials that are

practically bomb-proof, like concrete

floors and stone counters.”

Architecture, a firm that has designed a number ofaward-winning residential, commercial and educa-tional buildings. “We used the existing architecture asa jumping-off point to bring modern sensibilities tothe home,” he says. In addition to modernizing theoriginal living spaces, revamping the exterior, andupdating electrical and plumbing systems, Michaeldesigned a contemporary, two-story addition at theback of the home to house his office and studio, as wellas a new master bedroom suite with a private patio.

“Michael has a fantastic eye for making light movethrough a space,” Gail says about her husband, whoopened the house to sunshine and mountain views, thoughtfully placing windows and adding openings tointerior walls to create vistas. This manner of design

provides “a way to live in the soul of the house,” theFolwells say, “which we think should function fluidlyand draw you through the space.” The home was fea-tured on the Boulder Historical Society’s “Landmarksof the Future” home tour, and has also garnered threeAmerican Institute of Architects awards.

At its heart, though, this is a family home. “Rightnow there’s a tendency for modern architecture to beslick and pristine,” Michael says, “but then a homedoesn’t have the worn-in feeling of comfort. Once youlet go of those expectations, you discover that thescratches and dings that naturally result from everydaylife add warmth and character to your space.” For theFolwell family, the artful patina of a well-loved homewas definitely worth the wait.

With your artistic backgrounds, do

you encourage your kids to express

themselves creatively?

“My studio contains everything an artist

could ever want to play with,” Gail says.

“Because it’s actually a garage, we’re

comfortable with messes. You just put

brushes, paints and kids together, keep

an open mind, and see what happens.

They’ve even painted each other!”

What does your family like to do for fun?

“We love the Boulder lifestyle, and we

spend a lot of time outdoors,” Gail says.

“Our son is an accomplished golfer and

our daughter is a competitive skier, and

we all love to play tennis, swim, bike and

hike. We also really enjoy being at home—

having friends over, cooking out on the

grill or just hanging out in the kitchen.”

You recently picked up and moved to

France for half the year. Tell us about it.

“Last year our family spent six months in

Grenoble, near the base of the Alps,”

Michael says. “We wanted to expose our

kids to a different culture, so they attend-

ed the public school; to get there they

rode a tram instead of a school bus. Their

core classes were taught in English and

their electives in French, so they definitely

experienced some good language immer-

sion. Gail and I worked in the mornings

and explored in the afternoons, and it was

an inspiring environment for all of us.”

IN 1991 , WHEN THE HOMEOWNER B OUGHT THISInternational-style house in a Denver neighborhood lined with Tudors,it stood out like a sore thumb. Not even his real estate agent had highhopes of selling the home. But this buyer, raised in southern California, was no stranger to early 20th century, Bauhaus-inspired modernistarchitecture. He saw potential in the structure.

“The home was built in 1939 at 2,500 square feet,” he says. “It was inbad condition but it was affordable, and it was a project I wanted to takeon.” The goal for the renovation was to achieve a modern look with classical touches. So the homeowner stained the red oak floors ebony, kept the original art-deco banister and gutted the kitchen, adding exoticanigre wood cabinets and stainless steel counters.

Then in 2000, to accommodate a growing family, the homeownerdoubled the square footage of the home by adding a family room andupstairs bedrooms as well as a pool. With this expansion, he and his wifestarted buying art together, enlisting the help of art consultant AnnBenson Reidy. “The husband intuitively knew what he liked: pieces thatelicit a dialogue between the art and the viewer,” Reidy says; “but his wifedidn’t always understand his attraction to certain pieces.” So Reidyserved as a guide, helping the wife understand her husband’s preferencesand explore her own feelings about particular works.

Their collection includes pieces by well-known names such asAlexander Calder and Salvador Dali, but they also purchase works by

Colorado artists and have established relationships with several local galleries. Their guiding principle for collecting is to buy what speaks tothem, not those paintings that have the right colors or dimensions for aparticular space. “We want art that will look great anywhere—not just inthis house,” the husband says.

Between gifts from parents as well as pieces bought during their travels, the couple’s collection has grown to include works by Herbert Bayer, Jae Ko,Jeffrey Keith and Alex Echo. “What makes their house special,” says Reidy, “isthe co-mingling of first-class art with first-class furniture and textiles.Everything is thoughtfully chosen and placed to bring out the best in all of it.”

This careful mix of elements conveys a modern design sensibility, apparent in the dark floors, Benjamin Moore Dove White walls and anigre millwork. But each room stands on its own by virtue of clean-linedfurniture and unusual layouts. Just as in fine European salons, the chairs, sofas and tables create intimate conversation areas. Fabrics play off oneanother, and textures are sumptuous. The whole, in each room, is a marvelous sum of its parts.

“ INTRODUCING ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS

can lend a feeling of age to a newer home,”

says Camellia Interior Design’s Laura Abramson-

Pritchard, who created a sophisticated, welcoming

environment where a single father and his sons feel

right at home surrounded by a colorful collection of

contemporary art. “Along with a thoughtful blend of

furnishings and fabrics,” she adds, “these elements

help us feel warm and settled in a space.”

WELCOME HOME“The existing entry was an open breezeway that made itdifficult to find the front door,” says Abramson-Pritchard, who began renovation of the eight-year-oldDenver residence by enclosing the entry space anddesigning a ceramic tile floor that complements the original brickwork (now painted white). “Our goal wasto give the house a sense of history.”

That desire led the designer to choose a herringbone-patterned walnut floor that flows into the home office(right), where a hand-painted library table and statelymahogany desk hold court with modern elements likethe painted-steel light fixture and a painting by IanFisher called Atmosphere No. 5.

CREATIVE MINDS THINK ALIKEArt advisor Ann Daley collaborated with thehomeowner to select artwork that was “upbeatand colorful,” like Jerry Kunkel’s painting, out ofthe blue, which hangs over the living room fireplace, now refreshed with a mahoganymantel and new tile work. “We actually boughtthis piece before the remodel began,” Daleysays. “Our philosophy was to pick the art firstand then find a place for it.”

Abramson-Pritchard used the soft orangetones in the rug as a starting point for thespace. “It needed to be a place where you couldput your feet up,” says the designer, who covered the living room chairs with cut goldenchenille to create a sleek but inviting profile. The smaller windows are covered with sheerruched linen curtains; beneath them, a pair ofupholstered benches provides extra seating.

Creating a tied-together look, the electric-blue silk drapes jibe perfectly with the color ofthe script in the painting. “I hadn’t even seenthe painting when I selected the fabric,”Abramson-Pritchard says. “The fact that theycoordinate is a happy accident.”

A STEP FORWARDThe refurbished staircase, which hasthe same footprint as the original, features new walnut treads and risers and custom ironwork with arepeating curved pattern. On thelanding, a woodcut print called Factand Fiction, by Montana artist JohnBuck, showcases two figures and anopen book. “It’s a very philosophicalpiece that invites you to draw yourown conclusions,” Daley says.

BALANCING ACT“For me it’s called conversation,” saysAbramson-Pritchard about her defthand at mixing furniture styles in thefamily room. “Every pattern andcolor has a voice and balancing thosevoices is critical.”

Starting the dialogue is an openwood frame Michael S. Smith chairthat provides a sculptural elementwithout overwhelming the space.“It’s a piece that makes you stop andlook, but it’s not so ‘loud’ that it can’tsit next to furniture upholstered in abusy pattern,” she says, referring tothe Jane Shelton chair, which is cov-ered in gold chenille with a chocolatebrown diamond print. The customcherry bookcases ground the space; apicture by Manuel Neri, calledUntitled X, from Robischon Gallery, balances the room.

ECLECTIC INFLUENCESIn the dining room, an existing setof windows was replaced with onebig opening that floods the formalspace with natural light. The home-owner’s Asian-style table sets thetone for the curved oak Jiun Hoside chairs and soft walnut Burton-Ching end chairs. “The elements inthe dining room represent the yinand yang of the whole house,” saysAbramson-Pritchard.

Working with a chandelier designfrom Ironies, the designer did sometweaking by darkening the iron andhand-selecting the strings of tum-bled sea glass. “The etched soft blueglass has a coastal feel to it,” she says.Danae Falliers’ pigment print photo-graph, Semi 10, completes the space.

Page 61: Colorado Homes & Lifestyles
Page 62: Colorado Homes & Lifestyles

58

TOUCHED BY NATUREMore Asian overtones are evident in the master suite, where a framed section of hand-embroidered silk wallpaperhangs against a yellow wool wall covering. “The paper has the feeling of chinoiserie and is so beautiful we decided totreat it like a piece of artwork,” says the designer, who selected a tan Egyptian cotton bedcover for the maple framebed to complement the wall hanging.

Part retreat, part hangout, the bedroom’s sitting area is where the homeowner likes to lounge with his sons andwatch TV. The playful chenille pattern on the intricately carved ottoman makes a serious piece less fussy.

A WARM, FRESH BATHAfter gutting the existing bathroom and rearranging the floor plan, the designer chose custom walnut cabinets and apink marble mosaic tile to redefine the space. The carved screens, reminiscent of punched stone jali screens from India, create a sense of privacy, and the walnut light fixture in the shape of a shell is another reference to the sea. Over the tub, photographs of leaf patterns by Jerry Kunkel give a nod to nature and unite elements in the bedroom and bath. “Theywork with the Asian feel of the suite and complement the wood tones and silk wallpaper,” Daley says.

In the end, Abramson-Pritchard says the result is successful because the interior design and the artwork were treatedwith equal importance, so they both shine. “Ann and I really listened to the client and worked hard to select things thatwere likable and interesting,” she says. “With that approach the art and the design will almost always work together.”

WISDOM Art advisor and former associate curator for the Denver Art Museum Ann Daley talks about tapping the local art scene.

Why Denver?“There’s an abundance of great artwork right here in Denver,”says Daley, who selected all the pieces for this house at local galleries. “People think they have to go to New York or other big cities to buy art but that simply isn’t true.”

Where To Begin“Look at as much art as possible. See what each gallery has tooffer and start paying attention to what attracts you,” says Daley, who also recommends creating a database to store notes aboutyour likes and dislikes.

Educate YourselfDon’t be afraid to ask questions. Go to exhibit openings whereyou can meet the artist—another advantage of buying locally—and learn more about individual pieces.

Don’t Be Intimidated“The good news is this isn’t New York, where even professionalslike myself feel intimidated sometimes,” Daley says. “Gallery owners are happy to have people just come in and browse.”

CH&L: This home is so airy and sophisticated and just plain pretty.

Tell us how you got started.

Andrea Schumacher: The house really set the stage. It’s an oldColonial-style home in Denver’s Country Club neighborhood, onone of the best streets in the area. That alone was inspirational, todig my hands into Denver history. The couple that owns it is young;they wanted the house to feel young and traditional, but not stuffy.

Page 66: Colorado Homes & Lifestyles

62

What’s the secret to that balance?

We used clean lines and a soft palette in the family and living rooms. I love to use neutral backgrounds and addpops of color with the art, rugs and pillows. We took a moreplayful approach in the dining room, incorporating boldcolor with classic toile wallpaper [from Osborne & Little].It really gives what could have been a boring room some lifeand excitement. We had a little fun in the powder room, too, with the modern, graphic pattern of the F. Schumacherwallpaper. The room is just the little gem of the house.

What else do you love about this space?

My favorite pieces are the [Kravet] desk behind the sofain the living room and the buffet in the dining room [aone-of-a-kind piece imported from BrownstoneFurniture]. They add life and a little sparkle. The same

(top) The quiet, sophisticated design continues in the family room. The built-in entertainment credenza provides storage and visually anchors the wall-mounted television. goes for the dining table in thebreakfast room; it’s a hammeredstainless steel top on a woodbase. I love the overall softnessof the house, and it has the rightamount of punch, which makesit exciting and relaxing at thesame time. There’s enough eyecandy to make you want toknow more, but not so muchthat it’s sensory overload.

The art is beautiful. Did you have

to design around the owners’

collection, or did you help them

select these pieces?

The homeowners gave me a lotof suggestions. There’s a hugeChinese screen from EronJohnson Antiques that we hungon an 8-foot-by-10-foot wall; ittakes up the whole wall. Ishowed them a landscape fromWalker Fine Art, and they fell inlove. It turned out that the artist[Jared Hankins] went to schoolwith the homeowner, and theycommissioned him to do a piece. It’s a beautiful landscape—moody and gorgeous. In the dining room, I suggested a QuimBové piece. I’ve used his work inmultiple homes. It’s simple; heuses layers of lacquer and varnishto get rich, deep texture.

The Art of Collecting You love the idea of owning

original art, but cringe at the

thought of maneuvering the

mysterious world of art buying.

The truth is that building a

beautiful and interesting collection

is easier than you might think:

Visit galleries. You don’t have to

know Degas from Dali to enjoy a

stroll through an art gallery, where

you’ll cultivate a feel for what you

like. In Denver, you can find a good

list of current and upcoming gallery

exhibits at the Denver Art Dealers

Association’s website, denverart.org.

Get the scoop. Ask questions about

work you like. “Tell me about this

artist,” is a good place to start.

Don’t “match.” Your art doesn’t have

to match the sofa or rug—and in

fact, “that’s so not the point,” says

designer Andrea Schumacher.

Instead, she says, “Buy what you

love and find a place for it. Buying

art isn’t like buying curtains.”

Dare to go big. Often, first-time

buyers avoid large pieces because

they worry about over-committing.

But many homes suffer from “tiny

art syndrome.” If you have a large

blank wall, don’t be shy about

selecting art that can fill nearly

the whole space.

Go for it. Every collector has a

story of the one piece that got

away. If an artwork moves or

inspires you, grab it before

someone else does.

Page 70: Colorado Homes & Lifestyles

66

It’s a great mix of pieces. We love when homeowners just

choose what they love and make it work.

That’s the key to art. My grandmother was an artist—shestudied [at the Academy of Fine Arts] in Vienna and wasfriends with Salvador Dali in Paris. She has pieces in theBritish Museum, and my house is full of her work. It’s veryEuropean. I love the pairing of her work with clean-linedupholstered furnishings; or a homeowner could blendcontemporary art with traditional [furniture] pieces.Never be afraid to mix it up.

Pattern, texture, color—and art—warm up the light-filledmaster bedroom. A neutral area rug and modern bed fromRestoration Hardware offer a quiet foundation for theroom’s many sumptuous layers. The luxe bedding is fromThe Brass Bed, as is the petite French bench. More color andpattern enter in the draperies, made with F. Schumacher’sChain Link fabric. Brian Comber’s Elements, Air and Earthetchings (to the left of the window) and Karin Schminke’sdramatic Turquoise Dusk pull all the elements together.

In the mile-square neighborhood that wraps the Cherry Creek North shopping district, real estate Agents have a model that is decidedly unlike any other part of the Denver area, save for downtown Boulder. The 20-block shopping area is Denver’s own version of Rodeo Drive, and was taking on some of that same national luster when the market slipped into the 2008 eclipse. Now Suzy Whittemore and other Agents of Coldwell Banker’s Devonshire office in the heart of Cherry Creek are seeing things starting to flower again.

One year ago there were fewer reasons for optimism when agents launched their first Le Petit Jardin tour – luring 700 sojourners to see gardens within walking distance of the shopping. Now they’re readying a second tour for Saturday, June 23, to feature gardens as diverse as Cherry Creek’s real estate – some around grand, older homes; some around smaller ones, and some beside newer customs builders created

when the market was brisk. Sightseers tour creations by City Floral, Lifescape Associates, Planted Earth, and Sandy Schaffer Designs, for $10 tickets that directly support Colorado Homeless Families, helping displaced Coloradans

move back into self-sufficiency.

Le Petit Jardin runs 10:00 am until 3:00 pm (pre-register at CherryCreekGardenTour.com), through eight yards all chosen to be walkable – something that’s a prime asset of Cherry Creek, according to Devonshire Managing Broker Robert Shearman. “It’s a lifestyle around wanting to walk to restaurants, shops and galleries,” he said, adding that the tour ends back at Marg’s Taco Bistro at 200

Fillmore beside Devonshire’s office.

Meanwhile, Whittemore and Shearman are seeing the market sprout in time with their garden event – with a tightened commercial market in surrounding blocks, carrying over to residential. Residential properties, says Whittemore, are planted

into two plots; one of properties below $750,000, flying off the shelf now, followed by luxury properties that start at $1.2 or $1.3 million. The lower market dovetails with the much faster sales Denver-wide properties are seeing below $500,000, while the higher market has been locked up with inventory, much of it well off its high but now showing some increased sales. Should cautious sellers be rethinking their reluctance to market? “Absolutely,” said Shearman. “You’re missing a great opportunity, particularly if you’ve been waiting to buy a new place in this same market.”

Castle Rock Custom Estate Features Dramatic Views and Stunning Surroundings

©2012 Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC. Coldwell Banker®, Previews® and Previews International® are registered trademarks licensed to Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC. An Equal Opportunity Company. Equal Housing Opportunity. Owned and Operated by NRT LLC.

The unique beauty of 852 Diamond Ridge Circle is apparent from the moment the drive up its long, winding driveway begins. The four bedroom, five bathroom, approximately 7,996 square foot custom contemporary masterpiece is perched high on a mountain ridge in Castle Rock and sits on an approximately 1.70-acre lot with majestic views of Colorado’s major peaks. The exquisite home is now offered at $1,779,000 and is listed by Dick Berst of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

Through the double front doors, guests are greeted into the home’s open and airy floor plan and are immediately taken by its stunning views of Colorado’s most famous peaks. Every room on this level features nearly floor-to-ceiling windows with grand overlooks of the surrounding landscape. This feature is perhaps most breathtaking in the formal living room where the dramatic two-story ceiling and expansive windows help fill the entire space with light.

The custom kitchen includes new Brazilian cherrywood flooring and cabinets, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, bar seating, and an adjoining breakfast dining area with doors that lead to the flagstone patio with a stone and granite outdoor kitchen and fabulous, breathtaking views. The main floor also features a formal dining room and study.

The main-level master suite is fit for royalty and offers a separate sitting area, fireplace, large custom walk-in closet, and additional access to the flagstone patio. Enjoy the spacious master bathroom with steam shower, jetted tub and dual custom vanities. This level is completed by a four-car garage and walk-out finished basement that features a media room, wet bar and exercise room.

The community of Castle Rock itself is a unique treasure. Voted one of Family Circle magazine’s Best Towns for Families, the town of approximately 50,000 has been recognized for its blend of big-city opportunities and suburban charm, with good jobs and top-rated schools. It offers its residents a booming economy, frontier-era events like rodeos, and a true neighborhood spirit. This fabulous home is located just minutes from I-25 shopping, schools and Colorado’s largest office parks.

Discuss expectations up front. “It’s not

enough to agree on a price for a certain size

piece,” Sonnen says. “The price should

include an agreement about how much input

the client will have.” Determine if the artist

will provide sketches at certain stages and

whether changes can be made if you are

unhappy with the outcome. “Some artists

will redo the work entirely; others will touch

up the existing piece or be unwilling to do

anything,” Fryberger says.

Mind the middleman. For residential com-

missions, it’s best to bring in a third party,

according to Fryberger. “An art consultant

or gallery owner knows what questions to

ask at the beginning.” Adds Kiernan: “Some

artists do their best work through commis-

sions, while others find the pressure unbear-

able.” Work with a consultant who knows the

artist’s work and has executed successful

commissions with him or her in the past.

Size does matter. “You’ll spend more money

in the long run if you don’t get the size right

to begin with,” Quade says, and eyeballing it

is risky. He recommends taping paper to the

wall, cutting it to size and sharing it with the

artist. For more organic, three-dimensional

pieces, Fryberger encourages candid

communication. “You don’t want to give

the artist or consultant carte blanche.”

Leap into the creative process.

“Commissioning site-specific work can be

one of the most rewarding ways to acquire

important contemporary art,” says Katie

Kiernan, owner of Aspen’s 212 Gallery. Steve

Sonnen, consultant at Mirada Fine Art

Consultants in Denver, adds a caveat: “A

piece of art is an extension of the artist,” he

warns. “Ask yourself whether you’re the type

of person who will be happy accommodating

someone else’s creative vision.”

Get to know the artist. “The artist and buyer

should meet before the commission is under

way,” says artist Christian Dore, who appreci-

ates when clients invite him into their homes

to see the space’s lighting, architecture and

colors. Denver-based artist Don Quade

encourages remote clients to use Skype or

FaceTime for the initial meeting.

Get to know the artist’s style of work.

“Looking through an artist’s portfolio will help

you articulate what you like,” Quade says.

Be specific about what you want.

“Commissions are a wonderful approach as

long as the client and artist are in sync,”

Sonnen notes. Julie Fryberger of Fryberger

Art Consulting counsels clients to be precise

and avoid making assumptions. “When it

comes to color, not everyone’s green is your

green,” she says.

Don’t cut corners. “If there’s an artist you

love but whose work you can’t afford, don’t

go with a piece that is too small for the

space instead,” Fryberger advises. You’ll be

happier if you choose another artist.

Get personal. If you have a special keepsake

you might like to incorporate into a painting

or collage, Quade recommends discussing

it with the artist. “Adding something of your

will love for a long time.” —Jamie Siebrase
