COLORan ELEMENT of design

THE COLOR WHEEL• An illustrative organization

of color hues around a circle that shows relationships between primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, etc.

• The first known color wheel was designed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1704. It only had 7 colors.

Every time you use color, you are creating a color scheme:

• logical combinations of colors on the color wheel

• used to create style and appeal

The most common color schemes:

• Primary• Secondary• Warm• Cool• Complementary• Analogous

ANALOGOUS COLORS“NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS”

• Those which lie on either side of any given color.

• Analogous color schemes are often found in nature and are pleasing to the eye.

• They usually match well together and create serene, comfortable designs.

BLENDING COLORS WITH COLORED PENCIL

1. Hold your pencil at an angle and practice your pencil stroke on a scratch piece of paper.

2. Be patient and don’t rush.3. Start by adding very light color –

don’t use a heavy hand (at first).4. The blending of colors is

achieved by layering the colors on top of each other gradually.

• Did you use the space on the page effectively or is your design off balance?

2. Skills and Techniques – 40%• Form – did you achieve a 3D look?• Color – did you select an analogous color

scheme? • Color gradient – did you achieve blending?

3. Originality / Additional Designs – 20%• Do you have an original design?
