TUESDAY, MARCH 2, 2021 6 PM FILM PREMIERE AND PANEL Cucarachita Martina’s Musical Adventure This new animated short is inspired by Pura Belpré’s first picture book, Pérez and Martina: A Portorican Tale. The script is by the award-winning children’s book author Raquel M. Ortiz with art by Tere Marichal, the creator of over thirty books and recipient of two Emmys and the Premio René Marquez. Musical Director Desmar Guevara created the original score, songs, and arrangements. The film features the voices of award winning actress Alejandra Ramos, Mario Mattei and lead vocalist Elizabeth Pérez. Film is directed and edited by two time Emmy nominee Waldo Cabrera. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2021 6 PM MEET THE AUTHOR Basilio Serrano Puerto Rican Women from the Jazz Age: Stories of Success Puerto Rican women were not only present in early jazz, but they played trailblazing and innovative roles and contributed to the emergence of the genre in the States and abroad. Serrano documents the success and achievement of several Puerto Rican women from the jazz age, as well as a brief discussion on current Puerto Rican women in jazz and surrounding issues affecting women in the arts today. THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2021 3 PM WEBINAR Redistricting 2020: Challenges to Hispanic Congressional Representation in New York State The brief “Redistricting 2020: Challenges to Hispanic Congressional Representation in New York State” describes the challenges to maintaining Hispanic congressional representation as a result of population changes between 2010 and 2020. In spite of singularly contributing population growth in New York State, and therefore stanching the population decline evident in other population groups, Hispanics face unexpected challenges to maintaining and growing current levels of congressional representation. This brief is the first of a series that will examine the process of redistricting in 2020 in New York and other states with significant Puerto Rican settlement. Patria examines the activities and ideals of Puerto Rican revolutionaries’ exiles in New York City at the end of the nineteenth century. The study is centered in the writings, news reports, and announcements by and about Puerto Ricans in the newspaper Patria, of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. The book looks at the political, organizational and ideological ties between Cuban and Puerto Rican revolutionaries in exile, as well as the events surrounding the war of 1898. The analysis also offers a glimpse into the daily life and community of Puerto Rican exiles in late nineteenth century New York City. TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 2021 6 PM MEET THE AUTHOR Marilisa Jiménez García: Side by Side: US Empire, Puerto Rico, and the Roots of American Youth Literature and Culture In Side by Side: US Empire, Puerto Rico, and the Roots of American Youth Literature and Culture, author Marilisa Jiménez García focuses on the contributions of the Puerto Rican community to American youth, approaching Latinx literature as a transnational space that provides a critical lens for examining the lingering consequences of US and Spanish colonialism for US communities of color. TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 2021 5 PM WEBINAR National Borinqueneers Day and Military Service in Puerto Rican History Dr. Harry Franqui-Rivera, explores the impact of military service for Puerto Rico and the Puerto Ricans. Their service has served to disperse Puerto Ricans across the United States and the world creating new communities beyond what we understood as traditional diaspora centers. Military service, in particular during the WWII-Korean War period, also served to build modern Puerto Rico, and for Puerto Rican colonias turning into full-fledged communities to stake a claim of belonging. MAY 7, 2021 6 PM MEET THE AUTHOR Carlos Rivera-Santana Archaeology of Colonization --From Aesthetics to Biopolitics This book philosophically rethinks the history of colonization by focusing of the formation of the European aesthetic ideas of indigeneity and blackness in the 15th and 16th centuries in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean at large, and how these ideas were deployed globally. MAY 12, 2021 6 PM MEET THE AUTHORS Federico A. Subervi-Vélez, Sandra Rodríguez-Cotto, Jairo Lugo-Ocando The News Media in Puerto Rico Journalism in Colonial Settings and in Times of Crises. The News Media in Puerto Rico offers a synopsis, as well as a critical analysis of the Island’s news media system, with emphasis on the political and economic factors that most influence how the media operates. The authors also document the impact of Hurricane Maria on the media structures, presenting detailed insights about journalism and journalism education in these times of crises.
