Hymn Notes51 O Sing A Song Of Bethlehem

Louis Fitzgerald Benson (1855-1930) wrote this text to summarize the life of Jesus, from birth and ministry to death and resurrection. It appeared in The School Hymnal (1899) with the title “Early Life of Jesus.”

Benson was born and died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He trained to be a lawyer but later attended Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey and was ordained in 1886. Benson’s English Hymn of 1915 established his reputation as one of the foremost hymnologists in the United States.

Ralph Vaughan Williams harmonized this traditional English melody for The English Hymnal (1906). It was named KINGSFOLD for the village in Sus-sex, England, where the tune was documented, and first appeared with Benson’s text in The Hymnary (1927) of the United Church of Canada.

This tune was first written down by Alfred J. Hopkins in Westminster, Eng-land, and published in an 1893 collection, English Country Songs. It has been as-sociated with the song “Dives and Lazarus,” which Vaughan Williams employed in a setting for harp and strings for the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

The following is an excerpt from Feasting on the Word Worship Companion.

Each Sunday we’ll provide you with the scripture texts for the week, some questions you can use for reflection and morning & evening prayers for your convenience.

January 5, 2014 – 2nd Sunday after ChristmasJeremiah 31:7–14 or Sirach 24:1–12 Ephesians 1:3–14Psalm 147:12–20 or John 1:(1–9) 10–18 Wisdom of Solomon 10:15–21

Questions for ReflectionHow have you received “grace upon grace” in your life through Jesus Christ? Can you think of times when God has turned your mourning into joy, your sorrow into gladness? Does the incarnation of Christ call us to “make flesh” the love of God for others?

Household Prayer: MorningGod who gives birth to the new heaven and the new earth, midwife in me your love made flesh for others as I live in your world today. Amen.

Household Prayer: EveningHoly One, as I review my day and all I have done—or not done— lavish me once again in your grace, that I may rest in the inheritance of being one of your children, trusting this evening in the renewing power of your love. Amen.
