Colonial America Which colonies became the United States? The United States began as 13 colonies along the Atlantic coast of North America. The English founded most of the colonies in the 1600s. But there were colonists from other countries too. In 1707 England became part of Great Britain. From then on the colonies were referred to as British. Many of the early colonists left Europe in search of religious freedom. Africans were brought to the colonies against their will and sold into slavery. Which colonies became the United States? The United States began as 13 colonies along the Atlantic coast of North America.
