It certainly was a night to remember. On Monday, May 9, the athletics department hosted each of its 23 varsity sport programs, nearly 600 student-athletes and a group of special guests for the inaugural Centre Athletics Awards Show (CAAS). The ESPYs-style event set the tone for the night with a gold carpet runway and a riveting opening monologue from host Jessica Chisley. Throughout the CAAS, members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee served as presenters and handed out more than 50 awards recognizing the best moments and accomplishments from 2015-16, in and out of competition. Special awards were presented to softball’s faculty liaison Dr. Eva Cadavid (Colonel Award), senior swimmer Kristen Holliday (Inspiration Award) and junior Ceci Vollbrecht from field hockey and women’s lacrosse (Character Award). The night concluded with Matt Hughes seniors (Men’s Lacrosse) and Alex Combs (Women’s Soccer) taking home the respective honors of Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

1. Centre graduate Drew Briese ‘00 made his return to campus this summer when he was hired as the next head coach of the baseball program. Briese takes the helm of Centre Baseball after spending the past decade as an assistant coach at Birmingham Southern, a perennial NCAA Division III and Southern Athletic Association powerhouse. Briese’s wife Rachel graduated from Centre in 1999 and the couple has three children - Jack (13), Kate (8), and Finley (5).

2. Bryan Hearn was selected this spring to take the reins as the head coach of Centre’s men’s and women’s golf programs. A native of Louisville, Ky., Hearn has worked as the head men’s golf coach at Virginia Wesleyan University for the past four seasons. This past season, the Marlins were ranked as high as 32nd nationally and one of Hearn’s golfers claimed the NCAA Division III individual national championship. Centre’s new head coach takes over two programs which were ranked in the top-25 during 2015-16.

3. After being awarded a grant for a fully-funded position through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Program, Centre had the opportunity to add Stanley Willard to its staff beginning in August of 2016. Willard, a former Division III student-athlete at Wesleyan University, will be charged with improving the department’s efforts with campus marketing, community outreach and gameday atmosphere. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willard most recently worked as a marketing and promotions coordinator at Fordham University in the Bronx.

4. The 39th Annual Herbie McGuire Praying Colonels Invitational was definitely an exciting one for the alumni, sponsors and supporters that came together for a fun day of golf and friendship. Despite battling some unseasonably cold temperatures for mid-May, the participants enjoyed the annual outing that generates financial support aimed at enhancing the experience for the athletics department’s nearly 600 student-athletes.
