CONTEXTChocó has a diverse geography, unique ecosystems and unexploitednatural resources, but its inhabitantshave one of the lowest standards ofliving in Colombia.
For the local population, the artisanaland small-scale gold mining (ASGM)sector is the second most importanteconomic activity, after subsistenceagriculture. It is the main source ofincome for a significant percentage ofthe population.
The ASGM sector suffers frommismanagement of resources, a lackof adequate infrastructure andtechnical capacities, resulting in lowgold recovery. Moreover, ongoingmining practices in the region damagethe environment in the form of deforestation and water pollution.
Additionally, the presence of armedgroups, and the low level ofdevelopment and education, hasbecome an obstacle for their ownprocesses of governance, decisionmaking, gender equality, and theirability to find sustainable andaffordable income practices.
STRATEGYTogether with the European Union, the
Ministry of Environment and
Sustainable Development, and the
Ministry of Mines and Energy, UNIDO
works to strengthen technical
capacities and expertise in mining
extraction, develop alternative
productive projects to mining, and
strengthen their decision-making
capacities. Specifically, the project
seeks to train women and support
them in empowerment processes to
strengthen their leadership role in the
artisanal gold mining sector and their
communities.

STORIES FROM THE FIELD
"I get up at 6am and come to the mine topan. In a day I can collect three or fourgrains (which is equivalent to less thanone gram). I have been doing this almostsince I was born. I do this to survive. Thisis my work, this is my food and this is howI do my things."
