We welcome all the sports enthusiasts who have come here tothe desert for some of the best golf and tennis available anywhere inthe world!

In this issue, we cover such premier golf events as the LPGA’sfirst major of the year, the new ANA Inspiration, formerly theKraft Nabisco. We also profile the Frank Sinatra CelebrityInvitational and the Patrick Warburton Golf For Kids CelebrityGolf Tournament benefitting St. Jude, two tournaments thatbring the biggest names in sports, screen and rock and roll to thevalley!

The desert is in full season now. We have amazing weather, animproving economy and a full roster of tennis and golf events toattend. We hope this edition of Desert Golf & Tennis will serve toshowcase all of the exceptional opportunities, facilities, entertainment, restaurants and other businesses this little cornerof the world has to offer.

The BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden hasgrown to become one of the largest tennis events in the world, last year drawing more than 430,000 people to the CoachellaValley. This year’s event will be even better, thanks to expansionand upgrades—particularly in the realm of technology—thatLarry Ellison and the BNP staff have made to the Tennis Garden. Those improvements benefit not only the thousands of fans whocome for the tournament, but also the local community.

For an excellent behind-the-scenes look at improvements tothe Tennis Garden and what you can expect at the 2015tournament, turn to p. 12. You can also read about thetournament’s CEO, Raymond Moore, in this issue’s Spotlight, starting on p. 18. Moore is the legendary dynamo who sees to the

day-to-day operations of the tournament and Tennis Garden, 365days a year. It’s fair to say that without Raymond Moore and hisstaff, as well as support from tournament Tennis Garden owner,Larry Ellison, this tournament would not exist.

We’re proud to feature Novak Djokovik on our cover. Wethank our wonderful team of photographers, led by Luigi Serraand Piero Pierattoni for our tennis coverage, and Greg Felsen,Brian Morgan and John Henebry for our golf images.

We would also like to welcome ANA (All Nippon Airways)to the valley. Without its generous sponsorship as the new titlesponsor of the tournament formerly known as the Kraft NabiscoChampionship, this LPGA major tournament could have been injeopardy of disappearing from the schedule. Also named as theOfficial Airline of the LPGA, ANA signed a five-yearcommitment to ensure the tournament’s success and alsoincreased the purse from $2 million to $2.5 million this year! Please see our feature beginning on p. 24.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of our greatadvocates and strongest supporters, Kip Downing, owner ofPacifica Seafood and La Quinta Cliffhouse Grill & Bar. We learnedrecently that Downing is once again fighting carcinoid livercancer. It’s our hope that with all of our thoughts and prayers,Downing will again beat this serious disease. An avid golfer andrestaurant owner, Downing has supported Desert Golf & Tennisfor most of our 18 years.

The desert has so much to offer. We feel blessed to be a part ofthe valley’s great events and the people that make them happen. We thank our readers, subscribers and our advertisers for theirgenerous support of Desert Golf & Tennis.

As tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open, SteveSimon could not have asked for a better matchupduring last year’s men’s finals at Indian Wells TennisGarden in Indian Wells, California. Two of the world’s

greatest tennis professionals—four-time champion Roger Federerand two-time champion Novak Djokovic—were set to play head-to-head in one of the most dramatic matches of 2014.

At first, it seemed Federer would easily win the match as hebegan with a sizzling 6-3 first-set victory. But Djokovic remained

poised after the loss, coming back to win the second set 6-3, andthen displaying the mental aptitude that has helped him becomethe No. 1 player in the world, eventually winning a third set tie-breaker, 7-6.

The spectacular finish capped off the most successful BNPParibas Open to date, at least in terms of sales, as a record 431,527fans attended the two-week-long championship. To compare,382,227 fans attended the 2013 BNP Paribas Open, a record at thetime. In fact, since 2006, total attendance has risen annually, leading

Simon and his team to establish a lofty goal:500,000 attendees in the not-too-distantfuture.

“Based upon current sales results, webelieve we will see growth in ourattendance again in 2015,” Simon says. “Weare really focused on ensuring that everyguest who attends the tournament has afantastic experience.”

With that in mind back in 2013, LarryEllison, owner of the BNP Paribas Open aswell as its home venue, Indian Wells TennisGarden, began considering ways toimprove upon fans’ overall experience.First up, a new, 8,000-seat stadium tocomplement the existing Stadium 1, thesecond-largest tennis stadium in the worldwith 16,100 seats and 44 luxurious suites.

The new Stadium 2 was completed inFebruary 2014, less than a month beforethe BNP Paribas Open’s WTA premierwomen’s qualifying matches began. Withthe addition of Stadium 2, the TennisGarden’s overall seating capacity rose to41,485, a 17-percent increase, whencompared to 2013’s volume.

Aesthetics are particularly importantat Indian Wells Tennis Garden, renownedas one of the world’s most naturally pristinetennis facilities. To further solidify thearena’s reputation, 16.2 acres of new turfwere laid down, while 696 new trees, including 417 date palms, and 17,905shrubs were planted.

Three new permanent restaurantsopened on Stadium 2’s concourse: Nobu, acritically acclaimed restaurant combiningJapanese dishes with South Americaningredients; the award-winning ChopHouse, which offers seafood and USDAprime-aged steaks and chops; and Piero’sPizzaVino, which specializes in traditionalNeapolitan-style pizza. All three wereopen in time for the 2014 BNP ParibasOpen.

Technology also came into play. PublicWi-Fi was offered to attendees throughoutthe venue so they could view live videos ofmatches they were unable to see firsthand, use a new tournament app to check scoresand interact via social media. In addition, fans could view each of the matches onvideo walls constructed throughout thefacility.

“There are very few professional eventsthat have to provide infrastructure and

entertainment for their onsite fans for as many as 12 hours in oneday, so each of these additions was significant,” Simon says. “Fromthe restaurants to the 19,000 square-foot shade structure that wasadded to the property, each addition increased the uniqueness ofthe BNP Paribas Open experience, so the fans definitely embracedthe changes.”

In preparation for the 2015 BNP Paribas Open, eight 9’ x 5’video screens have been added to Stadium 1 to provide fans moreopportunities to view tournament matches. New awnings havebeen added to each of Stadium 2’s restaurant patios, along withreservation check-in areas that include seating and televisionscreens. Another 3,625 seats have also been added to the TennisGarden, increasing its overall seating capacity to 45,110. Finally, video boards were placed near each arena’s practice courts to give

fans more opportunity to watch players as they prepare for theirmatches.

“All of the changes that we made in 2014, as well as theadditional changes that have been put in place for 2015, weredesigned to enhance fans’ enjoyment of the tournament, so theywill return in the future and invite their friends to join them,”Simon states. “From the seating capacity to the food and beverageoptions, everything that Indian Wells Tennis Garden offers is fan-friendly so patrons always receive great value for their tickets.”

Of course, the fans are drawn first and foremost to the action ofthe matches and the chance to witness firsthand the athleticprowess of the world’s greatest tennis professionals and theexcitement of high-level competitive play.

Last year’s BNP Paribas Open provided some of the mostexciting storylines in tournament history. Aside from Djokovic’sintense, back-and-forth match with Federer, two other matches

stood out: Stadium 2’s first full-capacity match featuring Federerand Stan Warwinka as doubles partners (Bob and Mike Bryanultimately won the men’s doubles championship), and FlaviaPennetta’s shocking upset over Li Na during the women’s semi-finals (Pennetta then defeated Agnieszka Radwanska to win thewomen’s singles championship).

“Each of our champions displayed incredible talent andperseverance to capture the BNP Paribas Open,” Simon says. “Withthe best players on tour competing in each draw, they had to playworld-class tennis to win their respective titles.”

Last year, roughly 300 tennis professionals participated in thetournament’s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday qualifiers; 96professionals then competed in singles matches, while 32 teamswere involved in doubles draws. The men and women’s singleschampions each captured $1 million, as over $10 million in prizemoney was awarded to participants.

Although the total number of participants and overall prizemoney for the 2015 BNP Paribas Open has yet to be determined,

Simon anticipates both figures will remain virtually unchangedthis year, as the tournament maintains its status as the world’slargest two-week tennis event for men and women, aside from thefour majors.

“Within the sports world as a whole, there are very few events ofthis magnitude held in vacation destination areas such as IndianWells,” Simon says, noting that in addition to superb tennis actionin first-rate stadiums, fan can also enjoy the Coachella Valley’soutstanding golf courses, dining, shopping and near-perfectweather.

He adds, “We are thrilled that the BNP Paribas Open hasbecome the highest attended WTA Premier and ATP World TourMasters 1000 event in the world.”

Qualifying matches for the 2015 BNP Paribas Open arescheduled to begin on March 9, while the ATP men’s singles andWTA women’s singles finals matches will be played March 22. Evenif fans are unable to watch the matches in person, they can videostream them via tennistv.com, receive live scores and audio play-by-play and review photo galleries and behind- the-scenes videos byvisiting bnpparibasopen.com.

“With the recent addition of Stadium 2 and the new amenitiesthat are being offered this year as the tournament celebrates its40th anniversary, I anticipate the 2015 BNP Paribas Open will bethe best tournament yet,” Simon concludes. “I welcome tennis fansfrom around the world to come and experience for themselves thetournament’s exciting matches, all set within the incredible IndianWells Tennis Garden.”

The story of the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament and itshumble beginnings 39 years ago has been told over andover. It’s well documented how past partners RaymondMoore and Charlie Pasarell took control of the event,

built a new tennis center, overcame a sluggish economy, combinedtours to produce an event with a grand-slam feel, convinced BNPParibas Bank to be the title sponsor and then watched the eventexplode. As their hard work was reaping great rewards, it alsocaught the attention of another tennis enthusiast, Larry Ellison. Inearly 2009, rumors began to swirl about Ellison’s involvement, andtoward the end of that year it became official: Ellison, cofounderand former CEO of Oracle Corporation, purchased Indian WellsTennis Garden.

What ensued were a billionaire’s vision, expansion andpersonnel changes, which resulted in the attention of top-seededprofessional tennis players and the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art tennis facility in the world. Yes, the world.

What has remained a constant throughout this businessventure is the presence of Moore, the current CEO of the DesertChampions, LLC and Indian Wells Tennis Garden. For all of thevision Mr. Ellison brought and continues to bring, it’s Moore whomakes the magic happen—if perfectly manicured grounds, stadiums, restaurants and a tennis event now considered a major bymany can be the result of magic.

At the mention of magic, Moore chuckles. “People think Mr.Ellison opens his checkbook if asked. As generous and supportiveas Mr. Ellison is, this is a business and every aspect of the IndianWells Tennis Garden is analyzed to see if an investment enhancesthe business and makes economic sense.”

At age 68, Moore is celebrating 23 years of marriage. He has twodaughters. Born in South Africa, he prefers to be called Raymond, not Ray, and his office walls are covered with music memorabilia, some of it quite rare. He has been referred to as a hippie, radical androcker, and he ignores the constant ringing of his cell phone duringan interview, instead telling an amazing story about apartheid andgrowing up on Johannesburg, and ref lecting on his current distainfor the word “retirement.”

Moore’s bio shows a successful tennis career that includes twotitles. It’s a sport he started playing as a teenager. “My father got meinto tennis, he was an avid club player,” Moore says. “Growing up inSouth Africa, we didn’t have television; you survived by reading

books. I read this book about tennis players traveling the world andit painted a glamourous picture. I was playing a lot of differentsports at the time and thought, ‘wow, I wonder if can do that?’ Istarted working hard, practicing and entering tournaments andended up going overseas when I was 17 to play on the amateurcircuit. I played all through Europe and in the second year I came tothe States. That’s how it all started.”

A little known fact about Moore is that once he was in Europeand exposed to all races, he became close friends with tennis greatArthur Ashe. Moore and Ashe talked nonstop politics, searchingfor ways to open tennis to all races in South Africa. Mooreeventually took a stand against apartheid, pulling out of the DavisCup so as not to represent South Africa.

Tennis is definitely Moore’s passion. Another passion is his job, which he plans to hold for a very long time. “I think what hashappened here at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden that Mr. Ellisonhas created has given us the opportunity to be part of [something]very, very, exciting. I come to work energized, enthusiastic, inspiredbecause of all things I think are possible with this tennistournament and this site,” he says. “I haven’t thought aboutretirement, not interested. I don’t think I could, and I can’t imagineanything else I would rather be doing.”

Today, sporting the businessman look, Moore hardly seems a“hippie and rocker,” but music is yet another passion. “I love music,”he says. “Look around. I have signed items from John Lennon, theBeatles and the Rolling Stones. I just love music, all kinds of music. Ithink the two geniuses in music are John Lennon and Bob Dylan.”

As for the hippie reference, there was a time in Moore’s lifewhen he lived in San Francisco. “I certainly embraced the hippielifestyle,” he says with a smile “Make love not war—and then Isuddenly realized I had to make a living.”

Wine anyone? Moore is co-owner of the Wine Tree Farm inNorthern California with his sister Corinne. “She does all of thework; I taste and critique,” he says with a laugh.

As Moore continues to ignore the ringing telephone, it’s timefor one last question: How would he describe his life in onesentence? “A journey of hills and valleys, high tides and low tides,”he muses. “Yes, it’s a journey.”

The most powerful tennis players aren'talways the strongest. According to GlennErickson, director of tennis at the PalmSprings Tennis Club, the secret to

excellence at tennis is actually to use one's brain.“It's not about who can smack the ball the

hardest,” Erickson says. “Tennis is like a chess game; ithas to be cerebral. If you can play smarter youdon't have to be as physical. Of course, being smartand strong are best!”

Considered a cerebral player himself, Ericksonspends seven hours a day on the courts, five days aweek, just as he has done for 21 years at the club. He’s in charge of the tennis program and is a sought-after tennis instructor and coach with a wideportfolio of clients, including local high schoolstudents, tournament contenders and club memberswho strive to improve their game.

When asked why they want to improve theiramateur games at this point in their lives, Ericksonreplies, “To get better! It's always more fun if you canplay—or do anything in life—better.”

Erickson is a recognized name in tennis circles, having achieved notoriety in the senior circuit. Hisinterest in the sport was ignited as an 11-year-old boygrowing up in Yucca Valley, California. His motherfound an old tennis racquet in the closet andencouraged him to play in a city-sponsored clinic inthe courts behind their house.

Page 21: colo may june 06 - Desert Golfer · 2017-12-25 · The spectacular finish capped off the most successful BNP Paribas Open to date, at least in terms of sales, as a record 431,527

With a mentality geared toward aiming high and surpassing hiscompetition, Erickson found that not only did he have an aptitudefor tennis he also had a passion. Within a few years, he was rankedthird among juniors in southern California. Just when he wasready, and eligible, to join his high school tennis team, the programwas cut. A well-choreographed move by his parents and foursiblings to Palm Springs when he was 15 allowed him to play onthe Palm Springs High School's tennis team as well as graduatefrom PSHS.

Erickson married his high-school sweetheart, Janie, still hisbetter half today. He made the decision to venture into the worldof professional tennis, leading the life of touring and traveling theworld. After a few years, the reality of the lifestyle and limitationsof tournament income at the time put him at a crossroads.  Hedecided to shift gears and opt for career stability by settling downin Palm Springs as a full-time trainer and coach. Globetrotting tolocales such as Australia and Turkey and practicing with partnersincluding Andre Agassi and Michael Chang were part of thecareer package, but earning a solid living and providing for his wifeand four kids took precedence.

Erickson's success was realized in the senior division, which, is,of course, for those who've hit the ripe old age of 35. He wasranked No. 1 in the 35+ division one year and No. 1 in the 45+division a decade later. His coach from an earlier day, JoséHigueros, the pro player from Spain who reached the rank of No.6 in the world in 1983, used to tell Erickson that he didn't believein a “lack of potential.” In other words, hard work and mentalstrategy are the elements that create success.

An enthusiastic supporter of the BNP Paribas, Ericksonattends every match he can, primarily the evening events thatdon't interfere with his commitments at the Palm Springs TennisClub, which he takes very seriously.

Ref lecting on the evolution of the game of tennis, Ericksonstrongly believes that it's unfair to compare players of differenteras. There are factors to be considered such as enhancedequipment (larger racquets in particular) and the tendency forplayers to take much bigger chances now because of the moneyinvolved.

These days, Erickson is philosophical about his life. “My procareer didn't exactly go the direction I intended, but I wouldn'tchange a thing,” he says. “All of those amazing experiences mademe who and what I am today. I love what I do and being able toshare it with my family here in this desert and at this world-classtennis club. I continue to learn new things every day.”

One of his favorite events is the USTA Senior Championshipsat the Palm Springs Tennis Club each January, where he and Janielook forward to defending their title each year as mixed-doubleswinners.

He chuckles when sharing a recent exchange with a clientwho said, “I think tennis is starting to come back now.”  Erickson’sreply: “I didn't know it went anywhere!”

There are many reasons Coachella Valley residents andvisitors of all varieties love being there. The weather, themountains, the swimming pools and the area’sglamorous reputation are all strong lures. And one of the

biggest reasons the valley has that glamorous reputation is becauseof one man—Frank Sinatra.

Sinatra is inseparable from the valley’s lore and, indeed, itsdevelopment. There are Sinatra’s homes and compounds, stillstanding and occupied today. There’s Frank Sinatra Drive inRancho Mirage, California. And there’s the Frank Sinatra CelebrityInvitational. All of these serve to keep Sinatra’s memory front andcenter.

But the tournament serves another purpose, too. It benefits theBarbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children, and has done so sincethe tournament’s inception in 1988.

This year’s event, presented by Starkey Hearing Technologies, isscheduled for February 19-21 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino inIndio, California. Of course, the primary feature will be the 36 holesof golf on the resort’s Clive Clark-designed course. But there willalso be the usual ancillary activities not requiring golf clubs.

Registration and a pairings party take place on Feb. 19, withcheck-in available for participants staying at the resort. The pairingsparty, a longtime tradition and preferred tournament activity, isscheduled for 5:30 p.m.

On Friday, things begin to swing in earnest with breakfastfollowed by golf at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served to the players on

When the final rounds and final shots of the finalKraft Nabisco Championship were being playedout last year, there was a clear feeling in the air ofwinding down as Kraft Nabisco prepared to bow

out as the tournament’s sponsor.Tournament director Gabe Codding believes that the addition

of Japanese air carrier ANA as the tournament’s new five-yearsponsor will have patrons and players experiencing a feeling ofwinding up during the 2015 event.

The first ANA Inspiration is scheduled to take place in thetournament’s traditional early April calendar space, April 2-5, on theDinah Shore Course at Mission Hills Country Club in RanchoMirage, California. In fact, there’s very little change where thecompetition, timing and players are concerned. It’s still the LPGA’s

first major of the year, it’s still played in the house Dinah built and it’sstill played on the same Desmond Muirhead-designed masterpiece.

What will be different are the primary colors, and there will alsobe a reduction in snacks on the first tee and in the media room.

“We’re in the process right now of trying to rebrand everything, and have it feel like all the feelings and traditions are the same butthe sponsor is different,” Codding says. “The folks at ANA are soenamored with the history of the tournament and just want tosoak up the history and legacy, yet we want to play up theinnovations of ANA. So it’s a work in progress.”

With the company’s evident and inherent love of the game, thepartnership makes sense.

ANA has long been one of Japan’s leading carriers, and itsinf luence and scope throughout the Pacific Rim has been growingsteadily since the company started f lying locally in the late 1940s.Now, with Asia embracing golf like never before, and with growingAsian inf luence on the LPGA Tour in representation and on theevent calendar, ANA clearly feels the time is right to make itselfmore widely known in the United States, particularly in California.By making a five-year commitment to an LPGA major in California,ANA is striking out for its share of the U.S. mind and market.

“ANA is really known for its service, its food and its hospitality, and it was looking for a property that was going to bring globalawareness of its brand,” Codding notes.

ANA has nine gateways in North America, and its specialty isf lying to Asia. Codding says that ANA management knows theairline has very low brand awareness here in the United States. They see women’s golf as a way to change that and to get a goodfootprint in the United States while simultaneously growing thebrand globally. “They’re saying,” Codding adds, “We love the gameof golf, we love that tournament particularly and it’s something wewant to be a part of for a long time.”

According to Codding, all of the forces in charge, includingLPGA Commissioner Mike Whan, wanted to keep thetournament and its traditions in place at its traditional home. However, Codding points out, the sponsorship pool would haveincreased threefold if the restriction on keeping the tournament atMission Hills had been lifted. The fact that ANA wanted to keep

the tournament in place made it one of the sponsorshipfrontrunners from the time it expressed interest.

But what about that name? The ANA Inspiration?“When we went to the drawing board, we said, ‘you know what,

we can call this thing anything.’ But the LPGA really wantedsomething that could live with or without a title sponsor,” Coddingsays. “So you go through the thesaurus and you run out of golfwords pretty quick between tradition and legend and legacy, andmasters is already taken.”

The inspiration finally came from the sponsor. “ANA’s tagline,or one of the lines used, is that it’s the Inspiration of Japan. When wetalked about naming this, we talked everything from DesertTradition to all kinds of things, but the chief marketing officer at theLPGA said, ‘I really like that word inspiration.’

Everyone agreed it had something. “There’s not really anotherevent that can encapsulate that,” Codding says. “The more weplayed around with it, everyone just fell in love with it. And what itmeans to women’s golf to have Mickey Wright, Nancy Lopez andKathy Whitworth win the same event that a Lexi Thompson and aMorgan Pressel are winning, that’s something that can really cometo life, and this event can come to own that word in years to come.”

It’s a proven fact that the Coachella Valley takes philanthropy tonew heights. With more than 700 nonprofits and having tosqueeze a year’s worth of events into six short months, there’sreason to wonder what, exactly, is the secret to a successful

event? If you ask the staff at Desert Cancer Foundation and the

committee at Indian Ridge Country Club, the winning formula is asfollows: a committed staff, dedicated volunteers, an organization thatunderstands what helping others is all about combined with theunfailing support of a community eager to contribute. Put that alltogether and boom! You have the 21st Annual A Round for LifePro/Am Invitation, Golf Tournament and Gala, to be held March29–31.

If the name Desert Cancer Foundation sounds oddly familiar, itprobably is. However, it’s a name that’s often confused with otherlocal and national cancer research programs. With new ExecutiveDirector Paula Simonds at the helm, things are about to change.Simonds intends to bring the foundation to the forefront in theCoachella Valley and educate the community about the foundationand its ability to offer monetary assistance to locals facing cancer-related treatments, and to provide information and guidance duringa critical time in patients’ lives.

Located on a back street behind El Paseo in Palm Desert,California, the Desert Cancer Foundation helped close to 7,000recipients and has paid for cancer care valued at nearly $56.5 millionat a cost of $7.9 million. In fact, each donated dollar pays forapproximately $7 in cancer care.

Art and Cory Teichner of Indian Ridge Country Club in PalmDesert, and Dr. Sebastian George created Desert CancerFoundation in 1994. Their vision was to make sure that no localresident went without cancer care because of inability to pay for it.Currently, six of the 21 board members reside at Indian RidgeCountry Club, and more than 60 club members volunteer eachyear for the committee that hosts the annual Indian Ridge dinnergala and golf tournament.

What began as a “little golf tournament” in 1995 is now one of theCoachella Valley’s premiere fun and fundraising events. A Round forLife is a three-day event that kicks off with a gala dinner, silent and liveauctions, a gourmet plated dinner, live music and more, withcelebrity emcee Johnny Bench.

On Monday morning, pros and amateurs converge on IndianRidge Country Club for the Battle Against Cancer Pro/AmInvitational Golf Tournament, with an enticing purse for theprofessionals of $12,000. On Tuesday, play continues with the BattleAgainst Breast Cancer Golf Tournament, where participants canplay either nine or 18 holes. Both days include breakfast, lunch andawards.

Conditions will be perfect for play on Indian Ridge CountryClub’s two 18-hole championship Arnold Palmer-designed courses, widely acknowledged as two of the best golf courses in the CoachellaValley. The Grove Course has rolling fairways accentuated withgroves of citrus and palm trees, while the Arroyo Course offers nativedesert terrain and mesmerizing water features.

In 2014, A Round for Life raised over $425,000. All moniesraised help support two vital programs: the Suzanne Jackson BreastCancer Fund, which pays for mammograms and related diagnosticprocedures for uninsured, low-income patients, and the PatientAssistance Program, which pays treatment costs for all types ofcancer. Uninsured as well as insured people are eligible for benefits ifthey meet the Foundation’s financial guidelines. Applications arereviewed on a biweekly basis by a team of medical doctors, socialworkers, financial counselors and Desert Cancer Foundation staff.

With heartfelt gratitude, Robert A. Bernheimer, president of thefoundation’s board, had this to say about the success of theorganization: “Desert Cancer Foundation greatly appreciates theamount of support provided by Indian Ridge Country Clubmembers and staff. Their dedicated fundraising efforts for the past 21years have assisted Desert Cancer Foundation to provide necessaryfinancial support to those in the midst of cancer treatment. DesertCancer Foundation is a beacon of hope for those in the CoachellaValley, thanks to the philanthropic endeavors provided by IndianRidge Country Club.”

Links golf? Links golf? Why do somany golfers travel to Scotland andIreland to play genuine links golfcourses? Answer: because there areso few true links courses inAmerica.

Try naming them. You couldprobably count them on twohands. In terms of genuine links, as

opposed to pseudo links or links-style courses, itdoesn’t require much counting. There are three true links coursesat Bandon Dunes in Bandon, Oregon, and one at the National Linkson Long Island in New York. There are a handful of others acrossthe country.

So what is the definition of a genuine links course? To start, itshould be within hailing distance of the sea or ocean. Additionally, the soil should be of a sandy nature, it should have fine fescue

grasses and there should be an element of sand dunes on the site. Therefore, by the strictest of definitions, courses such as Sandhillsin Nebraska and Arcadia Bluffs on Lake Michigan do not qualify.Although though they may have many of the links characteristics, they are not near the ocean—the most fundamental requirement.

One of the first Americans to sing the praises of links golf wasthe great Bobby Jones, who said, “There is always some little favorof wind or terrain waiting for the man who has judgment enoughto use itAnd there is a feeling of triumph, a thrill that comes withthe knowledge of having done a thing well when a puzzling holehas been conquered by something more than mechanical skill.”

Links golf has a much sought-after cache value. It is the purestand most sustainable form of golf. Fairways and greens are firm, theydo not require a great deal of water and they need only a minimalamount of fertilizers and chemicals. Added value also comes fromthe rarity of these courses across the globe. Of the 34,000 golfcourses that exist in the world, only about 250 are genuine linkscourses. And of those, only about 40 or so are considered premierlinks, meaning they are internationally recognized.

The folks who sit on golf-course-ratings panels love links. Bydint of that ratio of 34,000 to 250, one would suspect that thepremier golf magazines’ Top 100 ratings would not include verymany links courses. This, however, is not the case. You willgenerally find that about one third of the courses in the world’s Top100 rankings are, in fact, links.

The oldest of these is The Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland, which is the historical and cultural “home of golf” that has been inexistence for over 600 years. Golfers seeking out the mostauthentic experience of this ancient game, played beside the sea onlinks land, visit St Andrews in ever increasing numbers each year.Although The Old Course is a daily-fee golf course, it is exceedinglydifficult to obtain starting times. It is possible to book a tee timeeight months in advance of the following summer season, where acertain number of times are allocated. As backup, there is also aballot drawn two days prior to a player’s intended round. Last yearin early September, when the process opened for advancebookings on The Old Course for the following summer, more than1,900 applications were received within the first few hours!

Many would naturally assume that the members of the Royal &Ancient, whose clubhouse stands resplendent behind the first tee,

would have instant access; however, eventhey have an allocation of tee times andconduct their own internal ballot system forthe members.

My first experience of St Andrews waswhen I entered The British OpenChampionship at the age of 18. I remember

driving through St Andrews and arriving atthe famous Road Hole green. I must say StAndrews looked formidable and, of course, there was the small detail of having toqualify. In those days, qualifying was held onfour courses in the local area. I was verypleased at the age of 18 to shoot a couple of

70s on the adjacent Eden Course and thusbe able to tee it up in The OpenChampionship. The year was 1964, theyear the great Tony Lema won The OpenChampionship. Sadly, only three yearslater, he died in a light-aircraft accident.

Altogether I played in 12 British Opens. My best finish was third at Royal LiverpoolGolf Club in Hoylake, Great Britain, in1967. However, my second appearance atSt Andrews was in 1970. After two roundsI was lying in fourth place and had thefortune to draw Jack Nicklaus in thepenultimate match on day three.

It was always a thrill to play with JackNicklaus, and even more so to shake handswith him on the first tee at St Andrews. Onthis occasion, we were welcomed on thetee by then Prime Minister of GreatBritain, Edward Heath. I recall Jack sayingto the Prime Minister, “It is really good ofyou to take time out to visit us at The OpenChampionship,” to which Ted Heathreplied, “The country can run itself today!”

Amid the expansive galleries ofspectators, the enormity of the occasionand the feeling of the ‘golfing gods’ peeringdown from above the Royal & Ancientclubhouse, I am pleased to report thatunder the severest of pressure I did manageto hit the first fairway. An achievementindeed, but I should mention that the firstfairway on The Old Course at St Andrewsis 110 yards wide!

Some ten minutes or so later, it wasapparent that the golfing gods hadfollowed us down the first hole. As wewalked to the second tee, Jack commentedrather proudly that he had now played 37holes at the most famous course in theworld and was bogey free. The golfingGods clearly had extremely good hearing;Jack immediately three-putted the secondgreen for a bogey 5! Jack Nicklaus went onto win the Open that year after an 18-holeplayoff with Doug Saunders, who missedan excruciatingly painful short putt on the18th for what would’ve been an outrightwin.

For those wishing to read more aboutlinks courses, there is an excellent coffee-table book, wonderfully written andillustrated by Malcolm Campbell andGeorge Peper, titled True Links._______________________________

Pass through the pro shop at Tamarisk Country Club inRancho Mirage, California, and head for the men’s lockerroom. But don’t go in (particularly ladies); instead, stop inthe hallway and check out the photos and memorabilia

highlighting the proud past of the club. For a club that’s been around since the 1950s and that served as

host for the Palm Springs Classic/Bob Hope Desert Classic formany years, you expect to see the obligatory shots of Mr. Hopehimself, along with photos of Jackie Gleason, Bing Crosby, FrankSinatra and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. There are articlesfrom magazines and newspapers praising the club, and images ofthe course in development and completed, standing as an oasis inthe barren Rancho Mirage desert. And there are photos of BenHogan, the club’s first head professional.

But squirreled away at the top of one display case is a small, nondescript cutout of these words: “A small group of serious, golf-minded men met during April, 1950, with the thought of creatinga third golf course in the Palm Springs area. They decided its credowas to be democracy and tolerance. The requisites for

membership would be character, integrity, a love for golf andcompanionship with fellow men. Today, ten years later, therequisites for membership remain the same, and TamariskCountry Club has become a favorite with many golfers from allover the country.”

One doesn’t have to know much about history, or golf history, toknow what these words meant in the context of golf in the 1950s.Some folks simply weren’t welcome at certain clubs, particularlyfolks were of the Jewish faith, and this was causing a problem in thecountry-club world of the time, notably in Southern Californiawhere many of the stars and powerbrokers in the entertainmentindustry were Jewish.

Tamarisk was different. The club’s founders included SanFrancisco theater owner Joe Blumenfeld, who also owned theWonder Palms Hotel in Rancho Mirage. It was there in 1950 that a

poolside chat between Blumenfeld and Consolidated Aircraftchairman Reuben Fleet, publisher Ernest Machlin, insurance agentCharles Clare, Armstrong Rubber’s “Red” Machlin and GummoMarx, brother and manager of the Marx Brothers, first generatedthe idea of creating a new golf club on the Wonder Palms property. Many of the founders, including the Marx Brothers, had helpedcreate Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles when theyexperienced similar exclusionary practices in that city.

The group saw promise in a similar club in the desert, and inApril of 1951, an application to incorporate a new golf club wasfiled with the state. Along with it was submitted a list of 60 names, people willing to put up $5,000. That list and later additions to itincluded some of the most celebrated names in the entertainmentindustry, from the Marx brothers and George Burns to HumphreyBogart, Dean Martin, Dinah Shore, Gregory Peck, Frank Sinatraand others.

It wasn’t that Tamarisk was necessarily “the Jewish Club,”though it had a large concentration of Jewish members. It wasn’tnecessarily “the Women’s Club,” either, but women were

welcomed as equals and permitted to become single members. That legacy still exists at the club today.

“The founders of the club thought it was very important to beall-inclusive because so many clubs at that time were not,” saysTamarisk membership director Lila Langsford. “And the membersstill feel very strongly about it.”

Other things the Tamarisk membership feels strongly aboutare great golf, a sense of community, a welcoming atmosphere andgreat food. Really great food.

The golf course was laid out by William Bell and is a perfectexample of the architect’s prototype Southern California designs. Itwas one of the standards in the rotation of the Palm Springs Classicand Bob Hope Desert Classic, and as a result can be extended to7,003 yards. Five different tees and three sets of combo allow forcourse lengths of roughly 5,600-7,000 yards.

The course’s palm-and-eucalyptus-linedfairways follow fundamental golf corridors, with lakes and ponds placed to enhancebeauty and heighten strategic value.Bunkers are well placed but not so deepthat members can’t climb out of them. Andonce on the green, the fun really beginswith slopes and tiers enhanced by thevalley’s famous break-to-the-Salton-Seadynamic. The course is also in impeccableshape thanks to superintendent Ben Vannand his crew and a state-of-the-artcomputerized irrigation system that can beprogrammed to make its own decisions asto what to water and when based on real-time weather and soil conditions.

The course benefits from its originallack of constraint and 1950s-style thinkingabout playing the game. In a central areajust outside the locker rooms and pro shop, members have easy access to the practice

putting green, driving range, first tee, No. 9green and 10th tee. Also in the mix is thehalfway house, not only a refueling stationfor golfers but also a haven for membersand their children who aren’t dressed forthe clubhouse but still crave a full mealserved by a full kitchen.

The clubhouse, which was renovated inthe 1980s and tweaked in the 1990s,maintains its spatial perfection as well as afeeling of coziness and warmth. Langsfordsays it’s not unusual for members to arriveearly in the day and stay until late afternoon. And in keeping with the founders’ wish forequality, the women command the sameamount of space for their locker room andcard room as the men.

The food has long been a draw.According to Langsford, it’s typical for theclub to seat 250 for lunch, which includes afull menu, a carving table and a soup buffet.

The meats are specially procured and thesoups delectable. The aforementionedhalfway house also capitalizes on the club’shigh-quality food product in its fullkitchen.

There are newer clubs in the desert, bigger clubs and ritzier clubs withimpressive member rolls and substantialdues. There are also fine public facilitieswhere part-time residents might save a fewdollars per season and still play high-qualitygolf rounds. But to find a place likeTamarisk Country Club, where history isdeep, the star power bright, the golf andamenities excellent and wheremembership is open to anyone thanks tothe club’s founding democratic principles, that’s difficult indeed._______________________________

Range of motion exercisedAs a tennis player, you’re always working on the form and

alignment of your upper and lower body because the sport requiresbalance, strength and coordination from a virtually infinite variety ofpositions. Exercise routines using Gyrotonic equipment can takeyou through a wide range of movements designed to strengthenindividual muscle groups and enhance range of motion.

An added benefit is that this equipment also reveals your physicalweaknesses to you. You can sense where your strength, flexibilityand balance need to be improved.

Because tennis is a “one-sided” sport—you’re either right- or lefthanded—overuse is a common problem. Gyrotonic exercises helpbalance out your weaker side and improve your symmetry. As youcontinue workouts with the system, you’ll notice the improvementsyou’re making. Your opponents will soon notice, too.

Strength and spinal rotationIf you’ve taken tennis lessons, you probably understand the

importance of spinal rotation to gain power and control of yourstrokes. For power, that rotation needs to be coupled with greatbalance as well as strong back muscles, abdominals and wrists.

Many Gyrotonic exercise routines are fluid combinations ofmotions that create their own natural rhythm. The motions youmake during these workouts are smooth and flow into one anotherwithout stopping. There are no jarring motions sometimesassociated with other exercise systems. You experience anuninterrupted contraction and extension of muscles through thesmooth rotation of your joints. Traditional exercises also have a linearquality to them while Gyrotonic movements have spiraling, rotational movements.

Barbara Wintroub, a local United States Professional TennisAssociation teaching professional, has been working out with theGyrotonic Expansion System at Lotus Flow Movement, a boutiquestudio in Palm Desert, California, and is enthusiastic about it.

“Gyrotonic has been instrumental in keeping my spine flexible, rotational and pain free during tournament competition and whileteaching,” she says.

As experienced players know, injuries seem to be as much a partof tennis as are double faults, meaning players are wise to establishtraining techniques that help improve their game without“pounding the pavement.”

Invented by dancerRomanian-born Hungarian Juliu Horvath, the Gyrotonic

system’s inventor, was a principle dancer with the RomanianNational Ballet Company. While on tour in 1970 he defected, and

Sit beside tennis courts for a while and you see players of all ages and all abilities. During any practice or game, you can watch them get goodaerobic exercise, work virtually all the muscle groups and stretch their bodies from the tips of their toes on up.

Pairing up the demands of tennis with a comprehensive exercise system is no small feat, but that’s exactly what can be accomplished withthe Gyrotonic Expansion System. And it’s worth noting many of the same principles and benefits apply to golf.

Developed on the strength and movement fundamentals of ballet, gymnastics, swimming, martial arts and yoga, Gyrotonic equipment isused in exercise routines designed to increase strength, balance, coordination, rotational flexibility and even endurance. With that list ofattributes, it’s no wonder this system is quickly gaining popularity with players of all abilities.

ended up dancing in the United States, firstin New York then in Houston.

While in Houston, Horvathunfortunately tore his Achilles tendon, which prompted his study of yoga. Hebecame deeply involved in exploring theconnection between movement andmeditation, uncovering new insights thateventually led to his establishing Yoga forDancers.

Originally intended for professionaldancers, his classes grew as individuals of allkinds wanted the benefits of his methods.

The fundamentals of Yoga for Dancerseventually led Horvath to develop hisGyrotonic equipment.

Given that it was a career-ending injurythat prompted Hovarth to developing hisexercise system, it’s not surprising that theseexercises are gentle on your body as theywork to strengthen and improve flexibility.

Reduce the chance of injuryOf course, the other side of the injury

issue is that you become less prone toinjuries as you improve your f lexibility, coordination and balance—exactly whatthese routines help you do.

Finally, the system works in more thanone way to push your tennis game to newlevels. These routines also have acardiovascular-aerobic element, whichhelps to boost your stamina. And, as in yoga, breathing and maintaining focus are centralto the system, which directly translates tobenefits on the court. ________________________________

Throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond, MissionHills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, withits 34 courts of grass, clay and hard surfaces, is known as atennis hotspot and home to numerous prominent

tournaments each year. In 2009, the United States TennisAssociation proclaimed it the best tennis facility in the UnitedStates.

To insiders, however, Mission Hills Country Club (MHCC) isalso code for the power, prestige and celebrated history of theentire sport of tennis.

“Little Tommy Tucker,” the 80-year-old coaching phenom, is afixture at Mission Hills, indelibly linked to its identity as a mecca oftraining for American tennis pros since the explosion of tennis inthe 1970s. Currently Tennis Pro Emeritus, Tucker can still befound energetically giving lessons every day, an integral componentof the past and current tennis culture at Mission Hills.

A virtual walking and talking encyclopedia of tennis andamong the most prolific and famous tennis players in the UnitedStates, former San Francisco restaurateur Tommy Tucker joinedthe coaching staff at MHCC 38 years ago at the behest of his friendDennis Ralston, former pro tennis player who was coached bytennis great Pancho Gonzales. Ralston was then serving as thereigning club pro at Mission Hills, a position he relinquished toTucker soon after.

Ushering in the Golden Age of Tennis, Tucker likens the pastfour decades to a master's class, with the opportunity to coach, playand participate in events with tennis stars including Roscoe Tanner,Stan Smith, Bryan Gottfried, Jack Kramer, Tom Gorman, HaroldSolomon, Bob Lutz, Rod Laver, Rosie Casals, Martina Navratalova,Chris Evert, Pancho Gonzales, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe,Pete Sampras, Michael Chang and a plethora of others.

“Obviously the sport has changed significantly with theinf luence of television and endorsements,  as well as  theinvolvement of agents and sponsors,” Tucker says. “My mostpowerful memories are from those days when everyone was out onthe court to help each other train and play better, and it was allabout working as hard as you could while keeping it fun andmotivational. It was so much fun that it was scary.”

The work-oriented tennis environment that Tucker recalls sofondly included the impact of Charlie Pasarell and Ray Moore, who

were residents at Mission Hills before founding the AmericanAirlines Tennis Games in 1974, forerunner to the present-day BNPParibas at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Tucker recalls that 16 of thetop 50 players at the time lived at Mission Hills, adding to the club’scache and credibility as a veritable tennis war room.  Both achieversand mentors were gathered there in one way or another.

One of those hard working achievers was Sharon Walsh, whowon the world doubles title with Billie Jean King in 1982 and whostill plays at Mission Hills. Walsh says, “Some of the most fun I'veever had was with Tommy Tucker and Dennis Ralston. We workedhard, as in buckets of sweat, but we absolutely loved it.”

One of Tucker's favorite club stories goes back to the first timeGonzales met John McEnroe. “When McEnroe was 17 years old,he was shy and uncomfortable holding eye contact with newacquaintances,” Tucker says. “Pancho wanted to meet John, whomwe called Junior, so I introduced them. Pancho told John about thewinner-take-all matches he had started at Caesar's in Vegas, and heasked John to play. John looked up suddenly, this time with directeye contact, and said, ‘Well, sure, but do you think you can findsomeone to play me?' Rebounding quickly, Pancho said, 'I suredo...Rod Laver!'”

The modest Tucker insists that the upshot of his stories aboutMission Hills remains focused on the club, not himself. He gives full

credit for the enthusiasm and talent developed during those glorydays to the club and its members as the combined forces behindthe current popularity of the sport of tennis, regardless of thegeography.

“I thank the members here at Mission Hills because it's trulyone of the most unique and dynamic venues in the country and inthe sport of tennis,” he says. “At a very basic level, it's provided mewith an amazing place to work and live, and I'm grateful for thatevery day.”

The SetupThe key to executing any good golf shot always starts with what

you do prior to the swing. To help get the ball to a back-hole location from a front bunker, you

have to start with club selection. Instead of choosing the moretraditional sand wedge for this shot, I am going to play the wedge thathas the least amount of loft, which is the pitching wedge. This lower-

lofted wedge will help create a lower trajectory, making it easier for theball to get to a back-hole location.

Next there’s hand position. To make this shot properly, I’m going toslide my hands down lower on the grip and hold the club with what Icall a weaker grip, meaning both thumbs on top of the club with anopen clubface. Ball position in relation to stance is also important. I wantto slide the ball position back into the middle of my stance so theclubface will bottom out and be a little more shallow under the ball.

Once the ball is in the correct location for this shot, I like the feelingof angling my left foot open to the target, which will also open up myhips and shoulders to the target. This open feeling helps me have thefreedom to rotate left through the ball during the swing. In addition tomaking sure I have an open clubface, I want to I want to see a good inchof sand inbetween the ball and the club. That inch of sand is going to bea cushion to carry the ball out of the bunker.

42 DesertGolF&tennis • FebruaryMarch2015

Golf instruction for this issue comes from the 13thhole at Desert Willow's Firecliff Golf Course. The

difficult 13th green is guarded by many sand bunkersthat can create a very difficult long green-side bunker

shot up and over a ridge to a back-hole location.

Page 43: colo may june 06 - Desert Golfer · 2017-12-25 · The spectacular finish capped off the most successful BNP Paribas Open to date, at least in terms of sales, as a record 431,527

The SwingBecause we are executing this shot with a pitching wedge, I like tokeep the length of backswing chest high. The lower-lofted wedgewill make the ball go farther, so I really don't need a big powerfulswing. The mistake that many golfers make is using a club withtoo much loft and taking a big powerful swing, which results inless control of the shot.

Making my way through the ball in the forward swing, my mainfocus is controlling the depth of the club through the sand. As I tellmy students, the sand is your friend when executing this shot; youwant to allow the sand to carry the ball out of the bunker for you.The feeling I like to have going through the sand is one of cuttingacross the ball with an open clubface, a motion that allows the sand

to lever the ball up into the air and out of the bunker. My handscontrol the amount of sand in between the ball and the clubface.

This cutting-across the ball motion is led by rotating my bodyleft through the ball. My primary focus lies in feeling my bodyrotating hard left in the forward swing, which serves as my powersource in executing this shot. Since my body rotation is my powersource, my hands are then free to control the clubface. My handswill "hold-off" an open clubface, which helps me control thecompression and therefore the distance that the ball travels fromthe bunker to the hole location. Notice in the photo that as I holdmy finish, my chest has turned hard left through the swing, whichhelps my hands keep the clubface slightly open.

The luxury market, defined ashomes priced $1 million andover, experienced record sales inthe Coachella Valley in the past

year with over 500 homes being sold.Prices seem to have stabilized or gone upslightly.

What’s in demand in this market?Light, bright and contemporary homes areselling the quickest and bringing in thehighest prices.

Beautiful kitchens with mixed-stonefinishes, designer appliances and winecellars are mandatory. Large Great Roomsare a must.

Today’s luxury-home buyer also wantsseamless indoor/outdoor living. For many, that means outdoor spaces with elaborateoutdoor kitchens, pools with fire and waterfeatures, outdoor media areas andgathering areas that provide the warmth ofa fireplace or fire pit.

Inside, cabinets are going much lighterthan those in vogue just a couple of yearsago. Flooring is also much lighter, withrustic woods and polished stone especiallypopular.

Of course, some things never change:Views are still a big factor in a home’s price.

Typical buyers of today’s million-dollarproperties are in their 40s 50s and early60s. Many have young families and arepurchasing with intentions of using thehomes for vacations.

Buyers in the Coachella Valley are oftenseeking a country-club lifestyle that offerssomething for the whole family. Golf is stillimportant; however, people also wantactivities for their children andgrandchildren. Typically, a spa and fitnessfacility is key. Fine dining and wine areexpected, as are active pursuits such astennis, pickle ball, hiking and culturalactivities in the communities.

Many of the established clubs in thevalley, including The Vintage, El Doradoand Thunderbird, have offered perks tolegacy children and junior memberships toremain competitive. Newer high-end clubssuch as Big Horn, The Hideaway, Toscana,The Reserve and Madison Club cater tothis new younger buyer who likes to workhard and play hard!

Here’s some key advice if you are sellingor buying in today’s luxury market.

For Sellers•Less is more. A serious seller should beready to pack up and move everythingexcess out of the house. Let your home bea blank canvas for the new owner.

•To create the most inviting look forbuyers, home staging is highlyrecommended. If a bedroom is designed tobe a bedroom, stage it like one. Lose theoffice/multipurpose room, which may notwork for everyone.

•Consider lighting your home up withpaint. It’s amazing how much bigger ahome will look with off-white or gray tones.

•Rework your landscaping that may havegrown a little too much. Add someseasonal color. This will help emphasizeyour view.

•Focus on your outdoor area by addingnew patio furniture. This small purchasecould add big rewards. Don’t be afraid toadd some color; it’s amazing how manypeople identify with a house that has

For Buyers•Start your search by checking thewebsite of a reputable Realtor or company, such as windermeresocal.com. This willhelp you narrow your criteria, includingprice, year built, size of home, location andamenities offered.

•Consult a Realtor. Find one whospecializes in your area of interest, such asproperties within country clubs or othertypes of communities. A specialist willlikely have information not necessarilyavailable on websites.

Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa is known internationallyfor his fusion cuisine blending traditional Japanesedishes with Peruvian ingredients. He worked atMatsue Sushi restaurant in Tokyo for seven years after

high school and, in 1973, was invited by a regular customer, aPeruvian entrepreneur of Japanese descent, to open a Japaneserestaurant in Peru. Japanese ingredients were scarce there andNobu had to create his own cuisine with what was available. Fastforward to today. Nobu has a culinary empire with 12 restaurantsin the United States, 19 scattered around the globe and two onCrystal Cruises ships. Last year he added an Indian Wells pop-uprestaurant during the BNP Paribas Open.

Brian Leon, general manager at the Malibu Nobu and projectmanager for the tournament restaurant, imported his staff fromNobu restaurants all over the world. The team arrived in the deserta month before the tournament to get prepared. The plan was toserve the most popular dishes from the Malibu restaurant, andLeon was happily surprised by the agricultural abundance of theCoachella Valley. This year he’s going to take advantage of that, incorporating local produce such as dates into some of the dishes.

The tennis menu offered many of Chef Nobu’s signature dishes, including yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño, king crab tempura withamazu ponzu (a sweet and sour sauce) and Nobu’s famed black codwith miso. There were also specialties created by Nobu Malibu’sChef Gregorio Stephenson, including red snapper with sweet shisosalsa and crispy shiitake mushrooms, and sweet-and-sour lobsterwith crispy leeks.

Not having catered at a sporting venue before, Leon’s biggestchallenge was that all of the diners arrived at once, between sets, and reservations were not available. But many of the customers

were aficionados of Nobu restaurants around the world and weredelighted with this version of the chef’s cuisine. Again this year, thepublic will be able to dine here on the Thursday and Friday beforethe games start.

Proprietor Lee Morcus acknowledges that the stress levelfor the new endeavor last year was huge, but it was anexceptional growth experience and he’s looking forwardto opening the pop-up Chop House at this year’s

tournament with gusto. Last year he offered a lunch and bar menu from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

and the full Chop House menu from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. With no clueas to what hungry spectators were going to eat, he ordered plentyof his signature, humanely raised, antibiotic-free beef, pork andlamb in advance, as well as wild, sustainable fish and organicproduce. The staff was trained over a four-day period.

The restaurant, seating 160 inside and 24 on the patio, had linesout the door. Televisions were set up to broadcast the tournamentfor waiting guests who were eventually summoned for a table ontheir cell phones. Morcus reports that the restaurant served 1,000or more people a day, and he estimates that he made 200 decisionsevery hour while tweaking his menus frequently.

Prime aged for a minimum of 28 days, Chop House steaks areseasoned with a house blend of sea salts, cracked black pepper androasted fresh herbs. The menu for the 2014 event was a carnivore’sdelight. There were 6-12 oz. filets and 10-oz. ribeyes and New Yorksteaks for “small” appetites. For heartier appetites, the menufeatured 12-oz. filets, 14-oz. New York steaks, 16-oz. ribeyes, 20-oz.cowboy rib chops and 24-oz. porterhouses. The list of seafoodincluded blackened ahi tuna, roasted sea bass, jumbo Alaskan crablegs, coconut shrimp, Scottish salmon and a 10-oz. lobster tail.Morcus estimates the staff served 350 Caesar salads each day.

As for beverages, the Chop House wine cellar hasapproximately 3,500 bottles, so Morcus created a smaller wine listof U.S., French and Italian wines for the BNP Paribas Open

restaurant. Despite the challenges of operating a new restaurant fora short time, Morcus insists that the 18-20 hour workdays werefun.

Piero Pierattoni laughed recallingthe pressure of inventing arestaurant out of nothing. Hedidn’t know what to expect last

year, but dove right in. The first thing hehad to do was install and cure a newimported Marra Forni Neapolitan wood-burning brick oven for the pizzas, whichtook a week. He recruited 90 employees, mostly part-timers who work in localrestaurants, and had a two-day trainingperiod and soft opening so they could learnthe ins and outs of the new restaurant.

The menu featured pizza bianche andpizza rosse, including “Pollo,” made withPiero’s white sauce, braised chicken, spinach, artichoke hearts, caramelizedonions, garlic and Romano, as well as“Capricciosa,” with tomato, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, artichokes and blackolives. The secret to these gems is thatthey’re made with 00 (double zero) f lour, atalcum-powder soft variation, as well as SanMarzano tomatoes and moist, house-madefior di latte mozzarella. And they’re bakedat 800 for 90 seconds. Antipasti, salads, pasta, sandwiches and house-madedesserts filled out the menu.

Every place setting included threepieces of silverware wrapped in a napkin,

which required two people wrapping full-time. Happily, the Hobart double-deckdishwasher was extremely fast cleaning the18,000 plates, 2,000 forks and 1,000knives, though it required three employeesfor loading and unloading. The Hobartpizza-dough mixer, however, got a littletemperamental and needed to cool offbetween batches, which slowed theprocess a bit.

During the first few days when theywere working on guestimates becausethey didn’t know what the demand would

be, they ran out of food and had to dash offto get more, yet ultimately managed well.In all, they served 10,847 people, with thebiggest crush during the final three days. This year’s Open is going to be a piece ofcakemake that a slice of pizza!

Any car that comes with“blades” has a cool factor jackedso high you should prep theother cars in the garage before

bringing it home. The Audi R8Competition—a limited edition modelcoming this year—is this car. As if the basemodel R8 weren’t enough to get bloodpumping and heads turning, theCompetition put another coat of sheen onthe shine.

Matte-black finishes on the aero andblade panels of the R8 are an extra touch.Designers even gave it polished tail pipes. All this hoopla comes as a precursor to the2016 redesign by Audi as it sits theLamborghini Huracan side-by-side withthe R8 in the R&D garage. The twomachines are said to share much of thesame DNA and early spy photos showsimilar platforms.

The R8 Competition has enoughhorsepower to give any Lambo or Ferrari arun on the track. The V-10 is said to have atop speed of 199 mph and the aluminumrocket launches 0-60 in a breath overthree seconds. It does this with 570horsepower, a supercar spec if ever therewas one. Those horses are pulling just over3,000 pounds of carbon fiber and stiffaerospace aluminum, which make itstrong and fast. Imagine a running backwith an ignition switch.

Only 60 R8 Competition models willbe released to the U.S., which will likely

serve to whet the appetites of buyers forthe 2016 edition.

In 2016, the R8 will roll out with a 5.2-liter V-10 like the Competition model. Thenearly 600 horses will lead a team of otherengine options that include an electricversion and a V-8 with 480 horsepower. Alonger wheelbase will make the ride lesslike a go-cart and gift a bit more forgiveness.

Inside the cockpit of the R8, drivers willfeel they’ve skipped ahead a decade in carmaking. The controls are notoverwhelming but they are not yourfather’s Ford Taurus controls either.Carbon fiber and suede seats fill out theinterior trim. Audi has poured love intoevery inch of the interior to give drivers asense that there’s both luxury and

aggressive sportiness included in the R8package.

Audi’s work with LED head and taillamps is making waves in the marketplaceas LED gives way to laser high beams. Audirecently released a European version of theR8 LMX with laser high beams; however, the United States has not approved laserheadlamps for release yet. Laser or LED,the look is astonishingly high-tech andaggressive. Talk of the next gen R8 loweringthe nose a bit will give the front end anespecially gnarly look.

The seven-speed, dual-clutchautomatic transmission zips without ahitch. There’s plenty of fun to be had withthe paddle shifters if one finds the manualtransmission too mundane. Audi’s

partnership with Lamborghini has givenmore than a little street cred to the brand asa legit sports-car manufacturer. Thenumbers tell the story of a machine that’sready for anything. When you get behindthe wheel of a car that’s begging to unleashnearly 600 horsepower, you know youaren’t in the minor leagues anymore.

Whenever a speedometer gives youclearance for 200 mph, you should sitforward and take notice. The R8 is Audi’scrowning achievement. It does the brandwell to blend ultra performance withluxury, and adding length to the wheelbaseto soften the ride is a move of genius and

mercy for drives who truly want this as adaily commuter car.

The R8 Competition and the 2016lineup will set you back $160,000 to$190,000, depending on your choice of trimand engine size. Though it’s perhaps a relativeterm, this is a very affordable price for a carthat will plaster you to the seat with torque-like jet and that looks like a runway model.Grabbing an R8 before they redesign itmakes sense. Waiting for the next generationisn’t a bad idea either. It’s your move._______________________________

At nine years of age, many boys areplotting how to sneak toads intotheir bedrooms without beingcaught. Not so Rory McIlroy.

Born in 1989 in Holywood, CountyDown, Northern Ireland, the only child ofGerry and Rosie McIlroy, Rory was alreadylong hooked on the game of golf at that age.Introduced to it as a toddler by his dad, hescored his first big win in the division forplayers age nine to 10 at the WorldChampionships in Miami. From then on, itwas nearly clear sailing.

There was that “oops” at the 2011 U.S.Masters that kerplunked him into15thplace. But like the song says, he was “doingit his way.” The kid was a natural—telegenic and dimpled as the little whiteball he played with. The young McIlroyseemed almost impossibly talented with apowerful swing, and he sealed his place inthe history books by joining Jack Nicklausand Tiger Woods as the only players to wina third Major title by age 25. He did thatwith his win at the 143rd British OpenChampionship in 2014 at the age of 21.

McIlroy landed a $200 million Nikeendorsement. If he was to wear a logo, heliked the Nike “Swoosh.” It’s young, clean, athletic and contemporary in design. Butdid he need a “gimmick?” Something in theway of golfing great Payne Stewart, whoseDad advised he “dress loud” to attractattention? Stewart had real style, whichgarnered him an endorsement contractwith the National Football League sportingthe team’s logos with his signature knickers,or plus fours made and designed for him byT. Barry Knickers, headquartered in ourdesert. A handsome charmer, Stewartbrought his own style to the golf coursebefore tragically dying in a plane crash.

Another on-course style-setter is IanPoulter, British golf pro and member of thePGA Tour and the European Tour. Knownfor his eccentric dress sense—which wewon’t go into—he is world-ranked No. 5and has endorsements with Mutual ofOmaha, Titleist, Nikon, MasterCard andOakley, among others. He recently decidedto get rid of his gimmicky signaturepompadour comb-over, updating his ‘do.’

For McIlroy, a partnership withBeaverton, Oregon-based Nike seemsperfect. The young pro is forming his owncompany and taking care of his business. Atrue entrepreneur, he seems as committedas Nike to creating innovative productsdeveloped from his athletic perspective, with a goal of giving every player whowears the Swoosh on the greens (or

anywhere else) a “leg up in competition,”according to Nike.

The Nike Lunar Control 3 shoe, whichretails for about $170, is a perfect exampleof how McIlroy and Nike are workingtogether. The Nike design team sees it as apotential game-changer. “With Rory, hecreates so much torque that we areleveraging the Flywire in the midfoot tocontain his foot. It is basically the symbioticrelationship between the outsole and theFlywire that is the key to the whole designof the Nike Lunar Control 3,” says CarlMadore, Nike Golf Innovation DesignLead, of the shoe design that looks gravitydefying, as if ready for liftoff. It is wellnamed.

“Rory worked with us to increase theshoe’s stability,” says Madore, who alsoadded an extra spike on the outsole in thenewest version of the popular golf shoethat also features lightweight full-length,responsive cushioning for superiorcomfort.

Randy Corti, who manages theLumpy’s golf store in Rancho Mirage,California, compliments McIlroy on Nike’sLunar Control 3 features. “The shoe islightweight, super stable and I like how thespikes are a little wider on the sole. Wedon’t walk much around here on thecourse, but you definitely could if youwanted to in comfort.”

McIlroy provided his ownendorsement of the new Nike footwear. “Ilove the look of the shoe and how muchlower to the ground it makes me feel,” he isquoted as saying in a photo, smilingbroadly while holding a silver trophy andwearing a handsome plush pullover withhot pink detailing that include the“Swoosh” over his heart. “With increasedtraction and stability, I am able to be moreaggressive with my swing and do not haveto worry about slipping.”

More than a mere fashion story,McIlroy is conversant on the narrative ofstyle and substance, a combination thaticonic French couturiere Coco Chanelwould have approved. Designer of the firstfashionable sportswear worn for casual off-duty hours but imbued with style, shefamously said, “Fashion fades, style iseternal.” And we all know that clothingwith substance, meaning well-designed,efficient, practical tools from caps to comfyshoes, almost assures the game is won.Rory McIlroy would agree. _______________________________

Whether you decide toapproach the New Year onlittle cat feet, in the wordsof poet Carl Sandburg, or

with a mighty roar, a la Katy Perry, Cartierand Boucheron are the go-to jewelry housesto help you take on 2015 with signaturestyle and feline finesse.

BOUCHERONBoucheron’s “A Collection of Animals”

presents a menagerie of vibrant yet delicaterings that glam it up with a nod to thegraceful creatures that rule our naturalenvironment and speak to our globalinterconnectedness. Several stunning ringstransform these precious and powerfulanimals into rich jewels, intended to infuseself-confidence and a sense of security in thewearer.

The beauty of cats has long beencelebrated by Maison Boucheron.Established in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron, the line’s first boutique was in the Galerie deValois under the arcades of the Palais Royal, the center of the Parisian luxury trade.Frédéric’s grandson, Gerard, was known forhis cat companion, Wladimir, who wasperfectly at home in the company’s PlaceVendôme boutique in Paris in the early1900s. The story goes that Wladimir wouldcharm visitors and shoppers with hisaffectionate and gentle demeanor. Sincethen, Boucheron’s cats, and all of its animals, have exhibited similar personalities.

Shibli, The Lion Cub Ring features adramatic cabochon pink quartz surroundedby 153 brown round pave diamonds (3.52carats) and 38 white round diamonds (.79carats). Two sparkling cabochon emeraldsform the eyes. It’s all set in pink gold and sellsfor $37,500. Shibli means lion cub in theBantu language of East Africa, where thesymbol of the lion as king of the animalsrepresents its role as the ultimate guardianof families and their homes.

Bagha, The Tiger Ring Tourmalinereinforces Boucheron’s protective theme byshowcasing the tiger, a symbol of courage inChina. The ring’s design has a green ovaltourmaline (1.5 carats) at the base of theright paw, with pave diamonds and blacksapphires positioned in alternating rows oftiger “stripes.” Two cabochon emeraldsrepresent deep green eyes. Pink gold offsetsthe tiger’s head and gently curved tail. Thering sells for $42,600.

The peaceful co-existence of cats andsnakes may not be commonplace in nature, but in the art and jewelry worlds, these twoforms find complete harmony. One of

Boucheron’s most emblematic animals, thesnake, is the centerpiece for several iconicpieces of jewelry. In 1888, FrédéricBoucheron gave his wife, Gabrielle, anecklace representing a snake as a way tocelebrate his love for her. She believed thatthe animal watched over her when herFrédéric was away. The snake in Boucheronpieces is a symbol of love, protection, rebirthand infinity.

A beautiful example is Kaa, The SnakeRing Rubies. Created with 208 round pavérubies, black and pink diamonds, spinels, 73pink sapphires and two emeralds inblackened white gold, this flamboyant yetrefined ring sells for $49,900. Kaa, TheSnake Ring Diamonds is available for$60,800.

CARTIERThis famed French jewelry house was

founded in 1847 in Paris by Louis-FrançoisCartier. Well known for incorporatinganimals into its designs, Cartier hasdistinguished the panther as one of its mostrecognizable images, notably in thePanthère brooch of the 1940s created forWallis Simpson.

According to the Societé Cartier, “Atruly wild animal, the panther is more than amere symbol for Cartier. It is a timeless iconthat is both predatory and elegant, restrained yet always ready to pounce.Roaming freely with emerald eyes, onyxmuzzles and diamond-set coats, thecreations from the Panther Collection maketheir mark on the world of jewelry.”

There are a host of fine jewelry itemsincluded in the “Panthère de Cartier”collection. Each one of a trio of trademarkbracelets lends its cultured paw prints to theart of accessorizing.

The Cartier Diamond Walking PantherBracelet is crafted in 18K wintery whitegold. A three- dimensional sculptingtechnique creates a lifelike f lexibilityenhanced by the shimmer of pave diamonds(24 carats). Each panther features a single, vivid green emerald eye. The 3/4-inch workof art sells for $155,000.

The Cartier Panther Head Braceletpractically brings the cat to life with 18Kgold that wraps smoothly around the wrist, leading to the panther head motif with anonyx nose, black lacquer spots and tsavoritegarnet eyes. The piece, which retails for$33,600, is both bold and regal.

Panther spots and stripes are the focus ofthe Cartier Panther Diamond and LacquerBracelet. The tubular bangle is created from18K white gold, black lacquer strips,

chrysoprase and onyx balanced toperfection with 661 brilliant-cut diamondstotaling 14.61 carats. The overwhelmingdazzle makes it easy to understand why itsprice tag is $248,000.

Cartier’s Panther Citrine and GarnetNecklace displays a casual 18K gold pantherperched atop a 41.13 carat mandarin garnetbead accented with citrine, tsavorite garnetsand onyx. Miniature black lacquerhexagons define the spots on this jeweledpet, which sells for $30,000.

More black lacquer hexagons can be“spotted” on the cats of the Panther Garnetand Diamond Earrings, made of 18K yellowgold and featuring onyx noses, tsavoritegarnet eyes and diamonds. These earbaubles sell for $31,700.

Options to express one’s animalmagnetism abound for the start of 2015,with a bit of help from two of the world’smost imaginative jewelers.  _______________________________
