WELCOME TO BERKELEY FIELDSWe extend a warm welcome to the players, offi cials and supporters of Colney Heath for this Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division match. We hope you enjoy a pleasant stay with us, along with the referee Terry Dawkins and his assistants Adriana Bucur and Peter Panayiotou plus our match sponsor Andrew Swanzy and wish you all a safe journey home.

When you progress in a national cup competition, you expect to face new teams and meet players you have not come across before. We have done particularly well to reach the First Round Proper of the Buildbase FA Vase. It is now getting serious.

The Blues have been drawn away to a team in a different league than the one we are currently in. Sandhurst Town are a Step Six side that are now in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Division One.It is in the distant past, we have come face-to-face with The Fizzers and we were not expecting to know many of their players.

But the No 6 seems to be familiar – Danny Bennell – and the No 8 – Liam Hind. What is going on here? It seems like it is going to be a NGU reunion party – if the guidelines allow of course. Both Bennell and Hind are regarded as NGU legends of the recent era, certainly during the time we were in the Southern League Division One Central when the ex-Chelsea forward Neil Shipperley was in charge.

Now Shipps was one of the few managers who would write his own manager’s notes

and I particularly remember when he used to relay about the times he used to frequent Borough Market.

Now it may be a case that Shipps would purchase items I would not for my Sunday lunch but since reading his adventures, I have visited Borough Market, which is to the southern side of London Bridge.

And what a great place it is. I loved going down there and miss it because of the wretched virus. So many stalls selling stuff you would fi nd diffi cult to fi nd elsewhere. And the friendly atmosphere there is second to none.

I am sure there will be a special atmosphere when we take on Bennell and Hind and Co at the end of the month – 31st October - at Bracknell Town, a ground the Berkshire club are sharing while their Bottom Meadow is being redeveloped. It will be an intriguing tie and hopefully we will progress to the next round and meet some more of our former players.....

On a fi nal note our assistant referee thisevening Adriana Bucur refereed ArsenalLadies’ 6-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur inthe Women’s Super League match that wastelevised live on BT Sport on Sunday.

PREVIEW OF THE BLUES BIG GAME

    COLIN JONES

THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY STEVE GOLDFINCH

Welcome to tonight’s SSMFL Premier Division match against Colney Heath. We extend a warm welcome to the Magpie’s manager Ryan Thompson, their management team and players, along with the club’s committee members and supporters, and hope you all have a safe journey home after the game.

We only completed one of our scheduled fi xtures against Colney Heath last season, the away game played on the 9th November, as the re-arranged 2nd April return match was one of 16 that fell victim to the Covid-19 lockdown.

In that match slack defending enabled the Magpie’s to establish a two-goal lead early in the fi rst half. Although we fought hard up to the break and throughout the second period to get back into the game, the hosts wrapped up their win with a third scored in stoppage time.

Although the 3-0 score line was one that fl attered the hosts, it reminded our players of how costly basic defensive errors are and how ruthlessly these will be punished by the teams at the top end of the table.

When Covid-19 brought an abrupt premature end to last season, Colney Heath were clear title favourites holding on to a strong top spot, six points ahead of their closest rival, Tring Athletic, a club experiencing a signifi cant internal upheaval at that time. We, on the other hand, were still eight points adrift of the club immediately above us with 16 fi xtures still to complete.

At the start of their current campaign, the Magpies picked up where they had left off in March. Although losing to Division One side New Salamis in the FA Cup in their opening game, they went on to win four league games on the spin to head the table once again. However, they have dropped points in their last three matches with home draws against Dunstable and Oxhey Jets, enabling the clubs immediately below them to narrow the gap.

And on Saturday, with the Magpies playing

their Vase tie at Holland FC – a contest they eventually won on kicks from the penalty spots – Eynesbury Rovers took full advantage, with a 4-0 victory over Edgware Town, to claim top spot.

For our part, at home to Potton United on Saturday, we were hoping to replicate our excellent 3-1 win at Oxhey Jets the previous week, to start moving the club up the table. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as, despite several missed chances and our efforts towards the end of the contest, Potton held on to their 34th minute one-goal lead to leave Berkeley Fields with all three points.

We will be aiming for a better result tonight against Colney Heath, and if we can perform as we did in the games against Edgware and Oxhey Jets, we know we are capable of achieving that. Of course, anything less will not be good enough to beat the Magpies as they will be equally as determined to get back to winning ways.

It should be another closely contested and entertaining encounter, and let’s hope that this time it’s us who can come away with the points!

    Come on you Blues!

VISITING THE BLUES - COLNEY HEATHThe ‘Magpies’ were founded in 1907 and played their early football in the Hatfi eld District League and, after the First World War, joined the Mid Herts League, where the third team played until recently.

Earlier records indicate the winning of a Harcourt Cup but it is believed that this was Junior football some 18 months earlier in 1905-06.

Success was a long time coming - 1935-36, and was disrupted by the Second World War. The golden era of football came from 1946 through to 1960 when the club won the Mid Herts Benevolent Shield twice, the Bingham Cox Cup, Division One and Premier Division titles.

In 1952 the switch was made from Fuzzen Field to the Recreation Ground and into the Herts County League.

Success continued with two Playing Fields Cups, the Aubrey Cup twice, Division Two, Division One and Premier titles. This

culminated over the Easter weekend in 1960 with the Herts Intermediate Cup and Aubrey Cup double.

The Reserve side also completed a double in 1958 winning both Cup and League. Odd trophies were picked up in the 1960s, 70s and 80s but these were pretty barren years on the fi eld.

Off the fi eld, however, the club fought for permission to use its old clubhouse. This was secured with leases still running today, but in August 1988 while modernising the building, the club burnt down.

Without a clubhouse, the Magpies, playing from a Portacabin, gained entry to the Premier Division. A new clubhouse was built in 1989 and an extension added in 1993, along with post and rails. Floodlights were erected in February 2000.

Colney Heath, in recent seasons, have had former Northern Ireland international Pat Morrissey as their manager and Ryan Thompson is currently the man in charge.

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS REVIEWIt appears that Leighton Town have recovered from their defeat against Biggleswade United as they have responded with two consecutive victories.

Their latest success came on Saturday when they defeated Oxhey Jets away 4-1 with goals from McClelland, Calcutt, Towelly and Ashton. The hosts’ response came from Putman.

However, it was Eynesbury Rovers who moved to the top of the table with their 4-0 win over Edgware Town where Daniel netted twice with Osei-Addu and an own goal also on the scoresheet.

Mason-Williams, Lambeth and debutant Lemon helped Aylesbury Vale Dynamos to a 3-1 victory over Arlesey Town while Rome fi red home the winner in their 1-0 success against Wembley.

Hunt, Morgillo and Spavins steered Biggleswade United to a 3-1 win over

Broadfi elds, whose response came from Thomas.

Shortt managed to get on to the scoresheet for Tring Athletic but they suffered a 3-1 loss at Harpenden Town, whose efforts came from Seeby, Scott, a penalty, and Anthony.

Burnside scored two late goals as Newport Pagnell Town defeated London Colney 5-1 with Lyon, Smail and Dunstan also on target while Knight replied for the visitors.

Adetiba and McCorkell netted as Harefi eld managed a 2-0 win at London Colney while Andrews grabbed the winner in Potton United’s 1-0 success at North Greenford United.

There was a 3-3 thriller between Dunstable Town and Crawley Green with Stapleton, Lambo and Smith-Reid scoring for the hosts. Cowell, Draycott and Cooksley replied for the visitors.

ROUND THE PYRAMIDBARNET have said that allowing Saturday’s game with Hartlepool United to go ahead would have been ‘reckless’.

The National League fi xture at The Hive was postponed on Friday night, with Barnet confi rming a positive COVID-19 test and The Bees have now released a further statement, explaining:

“Currently, the club has four players affected following two separate incidents. One player was (and continues to be) self-isolating as a result of being in close contact with a positive-testing family member. Separately, a second player received a positive COVID-19 test result.

    “The positive-testing player

had been in very close contact with two other members of the Barnet fi rst team, both of whom were then deemed at high risk of having being exposed.

“The real concern is that the virus may have spread throughout the squad, but we are unable to be certain of this until we have the outcome of the two tests. Given results could not be provided prior to the match, it was considered reckless to allow the match to go ahead knowing that it could pose a serious and undue risk to both Barnet and Hartlepool players and staff.”

Hartlepool say the away game at Barnet cost the club around £5,000, according to the Hartlepool Mail.

NOTTS COUNTY have confi rmed four positive COVID-19 test results in their squad. The Magpies’ National League game with Maidenhead United on Saturday went ahead, ending in a 3-2 home defeat for Neal Ardley’s side.

A club statement ahead of the game explained: “The most recent round of testing took place on Friday 16th October and returned four positive results among our squad, despite the strict protocols we have implemented.

In line with government guidelines, these individuals will now self-isolate for ten days from either the point they fi rst experienced symptoms or returned a positive test.”

Here we go again. Recently, Boris Johnson urged people to go back to the cinemas following the sad decision of Cineworld to temporarily close its 127 theatres across the UK, affecting 45,000 jobs.

It comes at the end of a damning week for the fi lm industry with the launch of the forthcoming James Bond fi lm No Time To Die being put back to 2021. Sadly, it’s an all-too familiar story in these strange Covid times, bearing a striking comparison to the football industry, which too has been left to pick up the pieces from the effects of the global pandemic.

So, the question remains then Boris, if you are pleading with people to go back to watching fi lms in the cinema - a small, enclosed arena with very little room for manoeuvre or ventilation – then why can’t fans return to football in a much larger, outdoor, socially-distanced environment? Last Saturday, 15 Vue Cinemas – Cineworld’s main market rival – showed live Premier League matches, well attended by fans. How can you watch football in a cinema but not an open-air stadium? That’s madness.

Quite frankly, I’m amazed – and mightily relieved - that more proud, well-established football clubs haven’t fallen foul to these testing Covid times and credit for that lies with the people who work tirelessly – usually without fi nancial reward – to keep our clubs alive. But, with a second Coronavirus wave threatening to kick in and tougher restrictions gradually being put in place, there comes a point when something has to give, as Cineworld have shown.

Last week’s £10m Government bailout to

the National League at least papers over the cracks for a few months but, at the time of writing this, clubs are still waiting for news of their reimbursements almost a week on and with their season already underway. Indeed, poor communication throughout has been a huge issue during this uncertain summer and that’s something that needs to be addressed in any future Covid post mortem.

Personally, I’m still dismayed by a lack of assistance, and greed sometimes, of the mega-rich Premier League and its member clubs during this crisis. No fewer than six players in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this week’s friendly with Wales and Nations League games against Belgium and Denmark boast a non-league background. Doesn’t that show that football at this level is impacting higher up the Pyramid?

In the week when Macclesfi eld Town were wound up by the High Court for debts totalling £500,000, Chelsea were spending £22 million for a replacement goalkeeper. A couple of weeks later, Arsenal then opted to severely damage their once proud community ties by dumping its much-loved mascot Gunnersaurus - for the sake of £120-a-week - before then spending £45 million on Thomas Partey. Obviously, I’m not suggesting bailouts of those proportions but what a gesture it would be from the 20 Premier League clubs if they put aside, say, £1 million each, to strengthen their community ties when it is needed most and keep their local clubs alive?

Cineworld’s demise is a worrying turn of events for the entertainment industry, of which sport plays a signifi cant part. Agreed, Boris, let us support our cinemas, theatres and music venues but how about including football stadiums in that too?
