GROUND RADIOS HAVE ALWAYS PLAYED A STRATEGIC ROLE IN A IRPORT OPERATIONS TETRA ENHANCES THAT ROLE
• On-time arrivals and departures of aircraft
• Efficient use of airport resources
• Rapid response during Irregular Operations (IROPS)

• An aircraft on the ground is losing money—need to turn aircraft around as quickly as possible.
• Depending on the flight and the airline, turn-around times may be as short as 20 minutes.
• Depending on the flight, there can be as many as 40 people involved in turning around a single aircraft.

WHAT HAPPENS WHILE AN AIRCRAFT IS “ON STAND”?
Waste Removal / Cleaning / Water
Catering Fueling
Parking / Towing
Passenger Unloading / Loading
Cargo Unloading / Loading
De-Icing
Baggage Unloading / Loading
In March, Los Angeles International Airport handled on average nearly 2000 flights per day.

RESOURCES ALLOCATED TO AIRCRAFT
• Allocations are made based on flight schedule, aircraft size, etc. typically using a resource management system.
• Resources typically allocated include but are not limited to: • Aircraft parking stands • Tow trucks • Gates • Check-in counters • Baggage carousels • Baggage belts • Passenger buses • Crew buses
Teams involved in servicing aircraft need to know which resources are allocated to a particular aircraft—and when changes are made.

WHAT ARE IRREGULAR OPERATIONS ( IROPS)?
• “Irregular Operations are events that disrupt flight schedules and negatively impact the normal flow of passengers through the air transportation system.”
• IROPS can be triggered by extreme weather or geologic conditions, power outages, labor issues, etc.
Having an IROPS Plan and a reliable and robust interoperable communications system are crucial for rapid, efficient, and effective
response.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN DURING A THUNDERSTORM?
• Incoming Aircraft arrive late • Incoming Aircraft may be diverted • Passengers miss connections • Departing Aircraft may be held at
gate. • Some flights are cancelled • Crews go out of hours • Arriving planes need new gate
assignments • Baggage has to be redirected • Catering has to be redirected • Passengers have to deplane

CASE STUDY: LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (LAX)
• Fourth busiest airport in the world • Second busiest in the USA
• 692 daily flights to 85 domestic cities • 928 weekly nonstop flights to 67 cities in 34
countries on 64 passenger air carriers • Nine passenger terminals • Two cargo areas (98 & 57.4 acres) • Land area covered by airport: 3,425 acres
(5.35 square miles) • 2018 statistics—87.5M passengers, 2.4M tons
of cargo, and 707,800 takeoffs & landings

OUR NETWORK AT LAX
• Operates in a mission-critical environment:
• Ramp areas • Gates • Terminals • Baggage areas
• Supports over 25 airlines & ground handlers:
• 50% are in community fleets and multiple talk groups
• iDEN technology 2001-2013
Collins Aerospace has been providing network services to LAX since the 1950s, and our network has approximately 800 users.

OUR GOALS FOR THE NEW NETWORK
13
• Standards-based technology for future growth
• Maintain or exceed customers’ current coverage needs
• Support large numbers of customers and talk groups with fewer frequencies
• Provide wider range of subscriber unit features and functions
• Provide rugged radio option • Cost-effective solution—not only for
ourselves as the network owner, but also for our customers
As systems integrators, we focus on meeting customer needs rather than on specific vendor solutions

OUR GOALS FOR THE NEW NETWORK
• Having a single virtual radio network shared among airports to handle diversions.
• Establish special talk groups to address specific needs during IROPS.
• Ability to communicate with all parties during an emergency: • Group & Individual calls (Semi-duplex / Duplex) • Priority/ Emergency • Broadcast • PABX / PSTN calls • Air–to-Ground Integration

WHY TETRA?
• Mature, standards-based technology • Deployed since 1994 in 130 countries • No longer at the mercy of a single service provider • Discontinued equipment can be replaced without network redesign.
• 4 talk paths in a 25KHz bandwidth makes it ideal for large population of users in a small area
• Wide range of features and functions to meet industry needs • Proven with airlines in airports worldwide • FCC approved; market is growing, and number of equipment
providers is growing
