Collingwood Life • March 20102

What a wonderful month it’s been. We celebrated Marion Porter’s birthday, and were reminded of how much our attitude impacts how we face aging. Dr. Milan Porter celebrated his 70th birthday and isn’t showing of signs of slowing down either as he continues to live life to its fullest.

February proved to be another month of incredible generosity from the Georgian Triangle, with continued support for Haiti, the Georgian Hospice; General Marine Hospital, the fight against Breast Cancer, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts among them. The community’s gener-osity goes beyond big causes too as we saw from the turnout to support Jason McCarl and his family.

With three more area athletes being named to Olympic teams (congratulations Palmer Taylor (Alpine), Tyler Nella and Erin Mielzynski (G Peaks)!), we caught up with the youngest athlete ever named to a Canadian Olympic Team. She’s a young woman to watch. To all the athletes who competed, including Brad Martin and Jeff Batchelor, we say stand tall! You did what most of us would never attempt to do and we’re so proud of you. Just as our able bodied athletes captured our attention, so did the Track 3 and Special Olympic athletes and coaches we met this month. Providing athletes with physical and/or intellectual challenges with a chance to experience the “freedom” of snow sports, the volunteers who support these programs are as important as the athletes themselves.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already March which means spring is just around the corner. Soon it will be time to dust off our bikes, wonder if the tulips and daffodils we planted last fall have sur-vived while we savour the sweet scents of new growth.

Collingwood Life is “about you and our community”. We love hearing from you and hope you’ll share your spring plans with us. Happy spring skiing!

Profile - Palmer Taylor

She’s smart. She’s warm, kind and gentle. She’s the youngest athlete on any Canadian Olympic Team. She’s also intuitive, grounded and she’s just 17.

On skis at 18 months, she spent some time racing until she discovered boarding at age 7. The switch gave her the chance to have fun while harnessing her energy and spirit and she’s never looked back. Four years ago, her family moved from Fonthill to Collingwood so she could focus on her boarding techniques. Lifelong members of Alpine Ski Club, they appreciate the club’s commitment to snowboard development. Together with the 1st half pipe and super pipe in the area, the club’s dedica-tion to interclub snowboard competitions has been invaluable in her development. Not surprisingly, her dad, local chiropractor Dr. Scott Taylor (of Taylor Wellness), mom Sydney, and sister, Paige, share her passion for the sport.

Palmer’s calm and open demeanor comes from the wealth of experiences she’s had. At 13, her training took her halfway

Open Championships.

Coach Jesse Fulton, founder of Shreducation, considers her to be one of the most focused and engaging students he has. Easy to be around, dedicated and eager to learn, she digs deep and is not afraid of hard work, consistently surpassing his expecta-tions. Going into the 2009 World Cup at Copper Mountain, the goal was to use the event as training for the 2014 Olympics.

That all changed when her consistent performances and dedication took the snowboarding world by storm and landed her a spot on the 2010 Canadian Women’s Olympic Half Pipe team. The long term goal is still 2014 but the experience she’ll gain in 2010 will be truly priceless.

Mills School, whose letters of inspiration mean the world to her.

Expectations for 2010? Do what she needs to do. Learn from mentors like Kendell Brown. Make the most of the opportunities she’s been given and most of all have fun. At 17, Palmer Taylor is a girl to watch and an inspiration to us all.

Georgian Peaks Ladies Day An Olympic Event with Real Heart

February 4 & 5th proved to be a incredible experience for those women who came out – all 650! A big thank you to all the sponsors who participated in the Pre-Registration Reception on Thursday night including Debbie Gibson of Lush Realty, Bright’s Gallery and Tholos Restaurant. Special guest and Peaks member, principal architect Gene Kinoshita showcased the Olympic Oval his firm designed.

Friday brought sunshine, incredible ski conditions, snowshoe tours with Free Spirit in the Loree Forest, delectable food and fantastic prizes (including a trip to Big White/Silver Star and an all inclusive trip to Cuba, through the support of Marlin Travel, Collingwood). The club’s charity of choice this year was Special Olympics Ontario. Thanks to the generosity

the Special Olympic athletes that train at the Club and support them in their hopes for Provincials and Nationals.

100 Years & Looking Ahead

Collingwood’s Marion Porter celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 31 at Sunset Point with over 50 family and neighbours. Her secret? Stay active. At 100, she and her friends shop the supermarket every week, play Scrab-ble and Dominos, attend Theatre Collingwood, share Saturday night movie nights and monthly dinners. When the warmer weather prevails she’s out walking at Sunset Beach. She is the glue that keeps them together.

Great Wine. Guaranteed.

How About the Alphorn?

A group of 40 year old buddies discuss where they should meet for dinner. It is agreed upon that they should meet at the Alphorn Restaurant because the

waitresses there have nice smiles and great legs.

10 years later, at 50 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed that they should meet at the Alphorn because the food there is very good and the wine seletion is good also.

10 years later, at 60 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed that they should meet at the Alphorn because they can eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant is smoke free.

10 years later, at 70 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed that they should meet at the Alphorn because the restaurant is wheel chair accessible and they even have an elevator.

10 years later, at 80 years of age, the group meets again and once again they discuss where they should meet. Finally it is agreed that they should meet at the Alphorn because that would be a great idea since they have never been there before.

Where Are They Now

With all of the focus on current winter Olympic athletes we in variably find our-selves reminiscing about champions of the past. Where are they now? What are they doing? It is interesting to see that US Olympic Alpine gold medallist skier Pecaboo Street has parleyed her Olympic dream into an exciting career as a trauma ward nurse in a major Denver hospital.

When recently contacted at work for an interview she answered the phone “Pecaboo, ICU.”

JOIN THE MUSIC SCENE! By: Melanie Vollick – Freelance writer

As a musician myself, I constantly hear of great jams going on and have even had a few at my home. Anyone can enjoy a jam session, especially if you like to dance! Local bar jam ses-sions are a great way to get to know area talent and meet new people. Check out the calendar in this month’s issue - there are several going on. If you are a music lover, get out there and enjoy the scene!

The bond that local bands have with each other in this area is quite intriguing. After speaking with a few of them, I came to realize that most of the bands are connected, and very supportive of one another. They’re often “the glue of the community”, linking people together. They know just about everyone, and getting to know them is one of the joys of living in the area.

When speaking about the music scene, I’m not only referring to bands and bars. I’m talking about shops, places to take lessons, jams, com-munity events and more. In Collingwood, you can visit two music stores on Hurontario Street - Blue Mountain Music or Cloutier’s, which is a fairly new shop. You can also visit J&R’s music shop that opened on November 2nd, 2009 on Second Street. Operated by Jay Robinson, it’s unique because occasionally you can watch a live per-formance there. Jay is not only a musician but a luthier (guitar maker) and is currently working on building a guitar that will be auctioned off for charity in the summer. Just another example of the way many musicians in this area are supportive of local charities.

In the summer months, there are festivals such as the Elvis Festival and the Collingwood Music festival, and you can enjoy Jazz in the Park on Thursday evenings in Stayner. For updated information, visit www.jazzbythebay.ca for Jazz by the Bay programs and concerts. There’s more going on in the music scene than you would imagine!

Think about this. Lawsuits in Canada are not only becoming more frequent, but the monetary awards are growing into astronomical

auto and watercraft policies is just not enough. Recently, the Canadian courts set a precedent when a 22-year old Ontario woman was awarded

on Highway 89 in August of 2002. It is predictable that lawsuits that occur now and into the future will settle in the millions of dollars.

Why are judgment awards so large? Factors taken into account in judgments include age, potential lifetime earnings, physical and mental impairment. In the case mentioned, the passenger injured was 15 years old at the time of the accident. She suffered catastrophic injuries and requires 24 hour medical care for the remainder of her life. The court took into consideration the cost of her lifetime care and lost future income.

How many times have you viewed or admired someone else think-ing their life looked so picture perfect? Possibly you work with someone like this, someone who always says the right thing at the

right time and you admire this gift they seem to have.

We may see something we like in another and say to ourselves “I want more of that”. We all know the celebrities who are admired by many for their beauty, their talent or their seemingly perfect lives. The thing is no one is perfect and few of us behave admirably all the time. We all have our share of challenges and setbacks in life.

We can be admired by many and honoured by few. We quite often see what we want to see in someone else. When we are admired or admire another, it is usually from a distance. When we begin to honour others true magic begins. When one honours another, we are admiring and accepting them warts and all.

Our deepest and richest of relationships are built on being honoured. A relationship or a marriage will not survive the setbacks and speed bumps of life if the relationship is solely built on mutual admiration.

The truth is we all long to be honoured. We all long for more of the heartfelt connection of unconditional love. It all starts with you and self acceptance and self love. We cannot give to another something we do not have. You are honourable, you are lovable just the way you are, when you believe it so it shall be.

Track 3 – Sharing the Magic of Snow Sports

Spend an hour on the slopes with Track 3 and you get a whole new appreciation for how a person’s life changes when they experience the “freedom to fly”. Heartwarming; breathtaking; and joyous are just some of the words you’ll hear from the volunteers. As for the skiers, their smiles say it all. Brimming with happiness, so excited to be out again, all thanks to the magic of snow sports.

on-hill trained instructors. With over 450 volunteers they support day long programs for 220 students each winter, delivering 16 programs, in 14 areas including school ski days. Based out of 5 ski resorts situated in Collingwood, and guided by Executive Director, Henk Engels with Walt Skobel, President and a huge team of tireless

-boarding. Whether it’s using a sit ski, outriggers, a slider, or supporting themselves on a pole between two instructors, these athletes acquire new skills as they develop a love for the sport.

But the need is great as the list of hopeful participants grows each year. The organization relies on volunteers who assist in so many areas – from slope side instruction to bus patrol. Through the generosity of the Ski Resorts across the Escarpment, and various members at the private clubs, as well as multiple fundraising events including Craigleith Idol, Men’s Day, and Snowshoe competitions we are able to support the need for ski and snowboard equipment. Track 3 receives other fundraising support through an Annual Corporate Ski Day at Alpine, individual donations, and government funding. Through these initiates Track 3 is able to then sustain and acquire adap-tive equipment to meet the needs of new students who arrive in the program each year.

The Wine Guy - GewŸrztraminerLast month I talked about my favourite red wine, so this time around I’ll cover my favourite

white. As it happens it’s also one of the few white wines that my wife and I both enjoy. Generally I prefer crisp whites (think Sauvignon Blanc or Chablis) while my wife likes hers softer (like Australian Chardonnays or off-dry German-style wines). So we rarely agree, but Gewürztraminer makes us both happy!

Now, Gewürztraminer can be a bit intimidating for those new to wine, mainly because most people haven’t got the faintest idea how to pronounce “Gewürztra-miner”. (It’s ‘Guh-VERTZ-trah-meen-er’) No matter how you say it (or spell it, for that matter); good ‘Gewürz’ always delivers a unique sensory experience, the

classic Gewürztraminer aromas of rose petals and lychee fruit complimented by a palate-pleas-ing spiciness. That’s a whole lot of fun in one little glass!

Gewürztraminer is a ‘cold-climate’ grape, so the best examples tend to come from cooler grow-ing areas like Germany, Alsace and Niagara. Gewürztraminer appears in dry, off-dry and sweet

most people (myself included) prefer the off-dry style.

Gewürztraminer is a remarkably versatile wine when it comes to food. It goes well with German-

also a wonderfully tasty partner for spicy or exotic foods like Chinese, Indian or Thai. In fact our Valentine’s Day dinner this year was ‘Siamese Gecko’ take-out and a bottle of Gewürztraminer!

Ready to run out and try one? The Silver Vine has Gewürztraminer at three different price points: -

The BMFA’s Inaugural HEART!

Held at the Bear Estate, Cranberry, on Saturday, February 13th, it was a fabulous Valentine’s celebration with food, art, poetry & unforgettable wonderful song.

During the silent auction of wonderful local artists work, guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Before our Olympians were honoured with the National Anthem, Jennifer Macnaughton, Chair, BMFA and Mayor Chris Carrier welcomed everyone. MC, Harry Posner, owner of Zencha Teabar, delivered an intriguing Spoken Word performance along side Kristan Anderson, Owen Sound’s Poet Laureate.

Meghan Lindsay (Soprano), with operatic singers Michael Ciufo, Philip Kalmanovitch and Ben Crutchley, who wowed the audience with a num-ber of arias.

Heart! will be the fundraising initiative for The BMFA to inspire art in its many forms, in the Georgian Triangle. Contact www.bmfa.on.ca or the Arts Centre, 163 Hurontario Street, Collingwood (705 445 3430).
