We CAN make a difference!
In cold weather, wear layers and wool socks to stay warm and save on heating.
NEW ESTATE SALE POLICY: A new policy for estate sales has been put forth by the Administration and is having a trial run by the OO Shop. The goal is to turn units over faster so that Marketing can show and sell these vacated units. The policy mostly affects OO Shop volunteers, but residents who buy large items like furniture from these sales must pick up these items no later than the day following the sale. This means you must inform those taking work orders that there is a deadline for pickup of your purchase. OO Shop personnel have been informed that there is no guarantee that the items will be in the unit longer than the day after the sale. This policy begins with the sale in unit 2001 announced in this issue of the Courier. UPDATE IN THE HEALTH CENTER! New beds and mattresses will be delivered to the Chesapeake neighborhood on Tuesday, January 22 between 9AM and 7PM. FROM CULINARY SERVICES, CHRISTIAN RAMSEY: Inclement Weather Meal Delivery: If there is potentially inclement weather forecasted, such as actual or wind chill temperatures in the low to mid-teens, heavy snow, or icy conditions predicted over the lunch and dinner hours, Collington Administration may declare an inclement weather event. If this occurs, you will be notified via email, broadcast voice messages or postings on the in-house TV channel, 972.

Smoke Free Collington Starts February 15, 2019!
January 18, 2019
Collington Community,
I’m reaching out to announce Collington will become a Smoke-Free Campus starting February 15, 2019.
I’ll provide more detail on this later in this communication but first I’ll give a bit more context on this
new policy.
As you are most likely aware, creating a smoke free environment has become more and more
commonplace on the campuses of hospitals, doctor’s offices, universities and senior living. Collington,
as a provider of services to older adults and an employer striving to provide a healthier workplace, will
now join the ranks of organizations and communities that have made the commitment to provide a
smoke free living and working environment. We also join the dozen other Kendal communities that
have smoke free campuses.
Collington’s Smoke Free Policy
It is the goal of Collington – A Kendal Affiliate to provide a healthy living and working environment for all
community members (resident, staff and board) and visitors. In support of this goal, smoking of any
kind is prohibited on Collington campus.
Definition
Smoke Free refers to prohibiting the use of all cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes and any e-products like
e-cigarettes on Collington campus (grounds, trails, walkways, etc), inside all buildings and residential
units.
Residents in the Cottage & Apartment Communities
Residents of Collington living independently in the cottages (including villas) and apartments are
prohibited from smoking on campus or in their homes. As a means to accommodate residents that
moved in previous to the implementation of this policy, current residents that are current smokers will
be “grandparented” in and will be allowed to smoke inside their homes only. Should this resident’s
smoking impact his/her fellow neighbors, an air purification system will be installed in the unit to
neutralize the smell of smoke. Note: There maybe a charge to a resident for the installation of an air
purification system.
Residents in the Health Center
Residents of Collington living in assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing or rehabilitation are
prohibited from smoking on campus or in their homes/rooms. Residents of the Health Center that will
not be “grandparented” in and will either need to cease smoking or choose to move out of Collington.
Health Center Leadership Team is aware of and working with the one health center resident that is a
smoker so that arrangements can be made to comply with this new policy.
Staff
Staff of Collington are prohibited from smoking on campus, including in their cars or Collington vehicles.
The current smoking area at the loading dock will be closed and no longer be available for smoking.
Staff will not be “grandparented” in and will need to leave campus if they choose to continue smoking.
Any staff leaving campus to smoke must do so during their break time and per policy, must clock out
upon leaving and clock back in upon returning.
Visitors
All visitors to Collington are prohibited from smoking on campus, including in their cars. “Visitors” refers
to any individual coming onto campus for any reason that is not a staff or resident member of the
community. This includes all vendors, contractors, family members, private duty aides, etc.
Smoking Cessation Support
Residents that wish to cease smoking are encouraged to reach out to their primary care provider for
smoking cessation information and support.
Staff that wish to cease smoking are encouraged to reach out to their primary care provider for smoking
cessation information and support. All staff have access to smoking cessation support through
CareBridge, which is Collington’s Employee Assistance Program. Additionally, any staff that participates
in the Collington Health Insurance Plan can access smoking cessation support. For more information on
this please contact Human Resources.
Policy Enforcement
Strict compliance with this new policy is necessary in order to successfully provide a smoke free living
and working environment for community members. As such, enforcement of the policy will be a
necessity and will be ongoing. Our Security Staff will be one component of this compliance. Residents
and visitors seen or reported to be smoking and in violation of the policy will be asked to cease. Staff
that are seen or reported to be smoking and in violation of the policy will be asked to cease and also
subject to the disciplinary process.
Thanks to all that have been patient and supportive of this significant milestone for Collington.
Sincerely,
Marvell Adams Executive Director
Reminder -
ACTIVITY FAIR COMING YOUR WAY!!
Everyone’s invited – on January 25th from 11 – 1 p.m. in the auditorium – Come meet the organizers of many of our great activities and groups – find out what they do to make life interesting and better at Collington. DEADLINE FOR ORGANIZERS – TODAY, FRIDAY, JAN. 18TH. Tables have to be rented and space allocated. So, tonight’s the night. Contact Nadine Hath-away ext. 5138, and Sue Regen , ext.7367, ASAP.
And Many Thanks -
Winter arrived with many flurries last Saturday and Sunday (6 inches?). It was matched by a flurry of activities from Collington’s staff, Ruppert and RDI. They continually kept our roads and walkways free of snow and ice throughout the day and night.
Gratitude is extended to them and our Culinary Staff as well. Not only did they call for our orders and prepare our meals, they also delivered to the cottages and villas. Meals were also set up in the Ivy Room and packed for apartment dwellers. Our sincere thanks to all!
Finally, an omission must be corrected. In last week’s article about our Out-reach Committee, a member was inadvertently omitted. So a big shout out of thanks must also go to Joyce Fish. Please advise if anyone else was omitted. You are all an amazing group of people.
Finally -
Don’t forget the special community meeting on February 1, at 1:30 in the Au-ditorium. Diversified Search will update the community on the search for a new Executive Director.
