UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SERVICE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 18 11AM - CHAPEL: "Living with Intention." Thursday's Unitarian-Universalist guest speaker Joshua Long suggests: "We have always heard of how the New Year brings a set of resolutions and goals that may be drastic or even unrealistic for us to keep. What if we could instead set New Year’s intentions? Intention causes us to align our actions with our truest self. This is something we can do all year-long, not just in the coldest winter. Let's reflect on how we can learn to live with intention." Josh is attending Wesley Theological Seminary and is serving the Annapolis church as Director of Contemporary Music and Membership Coordinator. He has a degree in Music and has served faith communities of various denominations. Join us at 11:00 and plan to have lunch with us after the service. TRANSITIONS PROGRAM PRESENTED BY THE HEALTH SERVICES COMMITTEE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2PM - AUDITORIUM: Concerns arise when Independent Living residents need to move to a new level of care – how are decisions made, who makes them, what does the assessment consist of, what are the different levels of care, what are the different units (Potomac, etc.) in the Health Center, will all my wishes be respected? The Collington Transitions Team from the Heath Center will answer these questions and explain the process for us. TAKE 5 JAZZ: THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, WASHINGTON, D.C.: Departs from Security at 3:45PM and returns to Collington at 8PM. Mike Davis and his quintet pay tribute to Cal Massey, one of the greatest jazz composers of the twentieth century. January Employee Commendations

To Culinary Services Team: You ALL did such a great job to put out this great dinner. Not only was it delicious, I ate the whole Beef Wellington, but it was beautifully served. Kudos to

you all, and all the workers that made it happen--those setting up and breaking down the tables and serving our every wish. It was a most memorable evening thanks to all your work.

Mary and HD Kim 12/11/2017

To Melvin Pittman: This is a letter of commendation for Melvin Pittman, regarding the work that he has done in our cottage over the past two years. I have heard from other employees that, if I have problems with appliances or other cottage issues, Melvin is the man to resolve them,

and this he has done for us.

In addition to his skills as a repairman, Melvin has a wonderful eye for hanging china plates and pictures, especially in high locations that we could not access easily. Within an hour,

Melvin hung fifteen plates in a line over our living room window and another seven over our kitchen window. Also, on another occasion, he hung twelve pictures high on a wall in our bedroom -- twelve pictures in three rows of four each; with about 1/4" between each frame. Having hung these pictures myself in several different residences, I know that it would have taken me at least twice the time, or maybe longer, to install these pictures. Melvin did this in

slightly less than one hour, perfectly.

Please convey our thanks and appreciation to Melvin for the good work he has done for us.

James and Mary Ann Curley 11/11/2017

To Kanika Naylor, Lula Jones, Denina Trotman, Tajuana Smith, and Sonja Sandoval: Please express my great appreciation to members of the team who did a super doper, extraordinarily great job with the holiday party yesterday. In my second time attending the event, it again was

remarkable, fun, enjoyable; festive and happening. It was in deed the party to be and to be seen. Big “shout out” praise to all involved…….

Courier 17 January 15– January 21, 2018

To Kanika Naylor, Lula Jones, Denina Trotman, Tajuana Smith and Sonja Sandoval: Dear Brenda and Hospitality Team; Just wanted to thank you all so much for the wonderful party and Dinner. Natalie and I had a fantastic time- the food was excellent and all of the special

touches were great. Thanks again for the wonderful time.

Kyle and Natalie Olsen 12/20/2017

To Emmanuel Omari: Thanks to you and your team for getting the chapel and game room ready for Sunday’s Christmas Eve service. The folding doors were opened wide and the

chairs were set perfectly. And it was done early so that when we dropped in after lunch all was done and we knew we did not need to get there early. We did not see who did the work, but

will you particularly thank him.

For the Hospitality Committee and Drama Committee -

Jim Holmes & Tim Sabin 12/27/2017

To Culinary Services Team: Food, service, wine . . . all excellent tonight. Y’all are first-class professionals. HNY to you and your great staff!

Dan Kelly 1/1/2018

To Christian Ramsey, Stephanie Tolson, Taimi Ando, Ana Amaya and Culinary Services Team: As Chair of the Dining Committee, and Co-Chair, with my husband Greg Gay, of the

Hospitality Committee, I am writing to commend Christian Ramsey, Director of Culinary Services, and his staff on their outstanding efforts to make the special events of the recent

Holiday season a resounding success. Chris and Stephanie Tolson, Executive Chef, eagerly took on the challenge of planning and producing multi-course banquets for two events, The

Dickens Dinner (107 Residents), and the New Year’s Eve dinner dance (97 Residents). Taimi Ando trained and choreographed the wait-staff so that all the tables in the Auditorium were

served simultaneously and the dinners proceeded smoothly and efficiently. Ana Amaya took individual and group reservations for both events, made table assignments and diplomatically

filled from the waiting list, spots vacated by last minute dropouts . The arrangements for refreshments in the Chapel following the Christmas Eve Adagio, the Holiday Party in the Auditorium and for breakfast Christmas morning in the Ivy Room, were handled smoothly.

Over and above the efficiency in handling these events, I want to commend the eagerness, creativity and spirit of goodwill shown by all the staff in making the Holidays joyous for the

Collington community.

Marlane Liddell 1/3/2018

To William Mosby: This is a letter of commendation for William Mosby, Collington bus driver and chauffeur. We have always enjoyed traveling to and from the New Carrollton station with

William and listening to the classical music provided. And we must commend him for one particular occasion when we took the shuttle to the Metro and were on our way to the airport. Shortly after William dropped us off at New Carrollton, Jim realized he had left his carryon bag on the shuttle. Of course the bag had plane tickets, credit cards, cash -- everything we needed

for our trip. In a panic, I called Security at Collington, Security called William Mosby, who immediately returned to the Metro station so that Jim could retrieve his bag. This was above and beyond the call of duty, and we keenly appreciated William graciousness and willingness

to do this favor for us. Please convey our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Mosby for his many kindnesses.

Collington’s journey towards community improvements is on the move and as such, we are providing the following updates: v “The Landing” - What’s Happening:

· On the conservative side, work is about 90% completed with a few items remaining for

completion. We have the ribbon cutting tentatively scheduled for February 23rd. Stay tune more information will be communicated as the date draws closer.

v Weather Related Events:

· As everyone is well aware, over the past number of weeks the temperature outside has

remained extremely cold and as such, Collington experienced multiple events throughout the community with the most noticeable being the pipe break at the Clock Tower; which in turn interrupted everyone’s daily life flow. With quick responses from team members across departments we were able to immediately take action in addressing the issue. With the clean up well on the way, the Clock Tower entrance should be back to full functionality if not later today, no later than early next week.

v New Hire - Director of Nursing:

· We are pleased to announce the hiring and onboarding of new Director of Nursing, DORA GRAY. Dora is not a complete stranger to our community, because of her previously consulting work in the health center. Please join us in welcoming her to the team; and also some time to settle into her new role.

I continue to encourage everyone to please pay attention to the winter weather news communication and take precautions to avoid falls; do frequent hand washing to reduce the spread of germs and be kind, gentle and neighborly to each other.

Best regards, Karen Boyce Chief Operating Officer
