COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
March 3, 2013 3rd Sunday in Lent
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Silent Prayer
O God, we come to your holy temple, not for what we can gain,
but to honor your name, not that others may think well of us,
but that we may pour out our thanksgiving. Alert us to your presence
and make yourself known to us in ways we cannot mistake.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Call to Worship
Leader: When our pockets are empty, God allows us to purchase
what we need, charging it to grace's account.
People: God thinks differently than we do.
Leader: When our souls are parched, God hands us a glass of
living water.
People: God's ways are different from ours.
Leader: When we grow weary of searching, God takes our hand
and leads us home.
ALL: We hold our empty lives out to the world, begging to
be filled to the brim with all that will only disappoint
us. Yet you would grace us with living waters, which
never run dry. We lie awake at night from the
insomnia of our stress, whispering of our fears. Yet
you would lullaby us with your love which never ends.
*Hymn: “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” PH #101
*Call to Reconciliation
Leader: Gifted beyond measure, wwe grumble that we don’t
have enough. Seeking to get our own way, we do not
see the way God wants to forgive us and restore us to
new life. In this season of reflection and repentance, let
us turn to the One who waits for us with hope.
*Unison Prayer of Confession
ALL: We continue to be tempted, Faithful God. We are
blessed with gifts to use for others,b but we want to
keep them for ourselves. We easily notice the mistakes
of those around us, but do not want to look in the
mirror at our lives. We turn our desires into idols, so
we do not have to recognize how they can damage us.
Forgive us, Steadfast God. Fill the poverty of our
spirits with the richness of your grace; feed our selfish
hunger with the bread of compassion for the world;
pour the living waters of Jesus Christ, our Lord and
Savior, into our hearts until they overflow with love.
Silence is kept.
*Words of Assurance Leader: God is faithful. God's love is an eternal bargain which will not be broken,G God’s grace is the gift which will not be taken back. People: Such abundant mercy, such extravagant grace! Thanks be to God, we are forgiven. Amen.
*Congregational Response - “Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us” PH #574
*Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.
PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Anthem - “I’m So Glad Jesus Lifted Me” Chancel Choir
Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 55:1-9 (p.671)
Psalm 63:1-8 (responsively)
Leader: O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for
you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
People: So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding
your power and glory.
Leader: Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips
will praise you.
People: So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my
hands and call on your name.
Leader: My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth
praises you with joyful lips
People: when I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you
in the watches of the night;
Leader: for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your
wings I sing for joy.
People: My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.
*Hymn: “Ah, Holy Jesus” PH #93
Gospel Lesson: Luke 13:1-9 (p.950)
Sermon: “Life Lines: Not off the Hook Yet”

RESPONSE TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith - Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Offering
These gifts express our gratitude for your lavish outpouring of love in Jesus Christ and your generous provision for all our needs. We dedicate our tithes and offerings for use in the fields that are ripe for harvest. May this money, along with our words and deeds, make an effective witness to Jesus Christ
as the Savior of the World. Amen.

Feeding our Souls: Prayer, Supper, and Study
Tuesdays: Feb. 26 - Mar. 19
Join us for some quiet time in Calvin Hall Tuesday nights from 6:00 – 6:30pm for contemplative prayer. Taize music and guided written medi-tation will be available. Afterward, we will be having a lite soup supper in the lounge from 6:30 to 7:00pm. Sign up for supper in the back of the church or speak with Pastor Kate. Stay from 7:00 to 8:00 pm for the conversation about the intersection of contemporary music of the band U2 and our faith.
The Gospel According to U2 In the life and work of the Band U2, author Greg Garrett argues that belief, communion, and so-cial reign supreme. One can trace throughout their music a wrestling with belief and faith, thanks in large part, as Garrett repeatedly reminds us, to their experiences of
having been burned by organized religion. Their music becomes a place where many people can turn for consolation and inspiration be-cause, Garrett claims, they are asking the deeper questions that plague the wider society. Garrett shows us that U2 embodies the realization that belief in a higher power and community with fellow travelers on the journey is all pointless if we’re not working to make the world a better place…living a commit-ment to social justice. He cites their involvement with numerous social justice organizations, especially Bono’s well-known commitment to Africa. In 2006, lead singer, Bono, traveled to Louisville, Kentucky and met with leaders of the Presbyterian Church at the National Offices to advocate for those suffering from AIDS, particularly in Africa. (Pick up the article on the back table at church.)
