4. INDIAN COAL INDUSTRY

4.1. AN OVERVIEW

The Indian coal industry is the world’s third largest in terms of production and fourth

largest in terms of reserves. Around 70% of the total production is used for electricity

generation and the remaining by the steel, cement and other heavy industries.

The first coal mining operation commenced in 1774 in the Raniganj coalfield on the

banks of River Damodar.

Till independence, the Indian coal industry witnessed sporadic phases of growth. Since

the private sector followed unscientific methods, productivity was low. The Indian

government took steps to correct this and improve the working conditions in the nation’s

coal industry. All privately owned coal producing companies were nationalized under the

Coal Mines (Nationalization) Act.

8.2.1. LOAD HAUL DUMP(LHD)

LHD is a tyre mounted loading machine which takes blasted coal from the face in its bucket,

transports it over a distance and dumps it on the district chain or belt conveyor.

Being tyre mounted, it runs faster than SDL (at speed upto 4km/hr) and the chain/belt

conveyor could be kept as far away as 90m from the face.

Power to the machine is fed by a trailing cable mounted on cable reel of the machine.

Being tyre mounted, LHD cannot work where gradient is more than 1 in 6 or floor is weak

and water seeps from the floor or drips from the roof.

The bucket, which is fitted in front of the machine. Is front discharge type. In tilting type

bucket, rear portion of the bucket is raised to tilt the bucket and unload coal. In pusher plate

type. The bucket has a pusher plate for pushing and unloading coal in the front. All

movements of bucket are by hydraulic pushers.

LHD is made in two parts which are joined by a flexible joint and can rotate upto 1000,

enabling it to take a turn at a narrow gallery junction also.

Depending on the model, bucket has capacity 1.5m3.

The machine can work in seam heights upto 2.4m. A 1.5m3 LHD is powered by 50h.p/550v

FLP motor.

For smooth working, galleries have to be maintained clear of fallen coal.

8.3.1. SDL (SIDE DISCHARGE LOADER)

No. of SDL used in Shyamsundarpur Colliery is 2(Two).

Maker of SDL is EIMCO ELECON LTD.

It is a popular coal loading machine of u.g. mines which can unload coal to the right or left of

the machine.

SDL takes blasted coal from the face with the bucket at front of the machine, transports and

dumps coal onto chain conveyor, belt conveyors (called pony conveyors) installed near the

faces are used in preference to chain/belt conveyors, tubs and mine cars for higher production

and productivity.

Being crawler mounted, SDL can work in gradients upto 1 in 4.

SDL is provided with dual chain conveyor type side discharge bucket for easier unloading,

lesser spillage and convenience of working in thinner seams. Height of the machine over

canopy is 2.1m.

The machine is powered by FLP electric motor and all movements of bucket are done

hydraulically for which hydraulic pack is mounted on machine itself.

Bucket capacity of SDL is 1m3.

Motor capacity is 65hp/550v

One SDL on average, loads about 100TDP, but, is capable of much more with availability of

adequate blasted coal and evacuation capacity, and efficient maintenance.

8.3.2. UDM (UNIVERSAL DRILLING MACHINE)

It is a crawler mounted electro-hydraulic machine which can drill blast-holes in the face, and

also holes for roof/side/floor bolting at various angles. Hence, it has been named UDM.

The machine is provided with a 22kw FLP motor, a strong canopy and is so designed that it

can move in narrow galleries and can take sharp turns.

Movement of drill boom and face by hydraulic pushers. The operator is required only to

control a few levers to do fast drilling. He is saved from falling dust. The machine can drill

holes from 38 to 63mm diameter and 3 to 5m deep. By adding more drill rods, holes upto

20m long can be drilled. Hence, it is found very useful in Blasting Gallery Panels also.

Since hand held drill cannot drill long holes, blasting progress per round is limited to 0.9m.

UDM permits drilling of longer holes easily and hence, better progress per blast is possible.

Due to speedy drilling, production and productivity of loading machines (SDL, LHD) also

increase considerably.

UDM can work in gradients upto 1 in 4 and in seam heights upto 3.5m. The machine is 1.6m

high, 4.6m long and 1m wide with a travelling speed upto 3kmph.

DUAL HEIGHT, WATER DIVERTING ROCK BOLTING TELLTALE

INTRODUCTION Ground control monitoring instrumentation fulfils two key requirements for safe underground

mining. It provides personnel with information on the stability of the roof and sides. It can provide the detailed data on rock and support loads and deformations required

to optimize support design.

This visual telltale gives immediate information on movement within and above the rockbolted height.

Page 37: Colliery Training Report(SARPI PROJECT, ECL)

ABHISEK MAITY DEPT. OF MINING, ASANSOL POLYTECHNIC

37 Signature………………………..

READING METHODS OF TELLTALE

BY COLOR

Report whole and part bands visible. For example:

“A”: GREEEN “B”: YELLOW Report daily, unless instructed otherwise.

INTERPRETATION

1. Movement of “A” relative to its reference (bottom plastic tube) represents the strata expansion WITHIN the bolted height.

2. Movement of “B” relative to its reference (bottom of “A” ) represents the strata expansion ABOVE the bolted height (assuming no movement above top anchor)

3. The total strata expansion is “A” plus “B”.

4. Expansion of strata above the top anchor detected.

ACTION

The appropriate action levels for the district and the remedial actions to be taken, when these levels are exceeded, will have been set by the Colliery Manager. However if the telltale indicates

either “A” or “B” has changed from one color-band to another or if the rate of movement increases, management should be consulted immediately for the required action.

VENTILATION

All the seams have inter-connected ventilation and it’s reported that ventilation is inadequate

in both section of RVII. Since Pit No I of Sarpi Unit has been widening and deepening has been done up to RVIIA dip side development of RVII should be speeded up and connected with the

shaft at least RVII ventilation can be independent.
