FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Friends of our College, Greetings and welcome to our last Newsletter for the year. Last Monday our new school leaders attended a ‘leadership day’ in preparation for their roles for next year. At the end of the day they elected the College Captains from among their group. Consequently, I am pleased to announce that our College Captains for 2017 are Courtney Furlan and Kevin Tomy. Congratulations, Courtney and Kevin. I also wish to thank and congratulate all our 2017 school leaders as they assume this responsibility and wish them well: Courtney Furlan, Kevin Tomy, Erica Core, Joanna Glinatsis, Kate Gornall, Nathan Lim, Jason Orian and Chloe Wynne. We are very confident that these young men and women will lead and serve the school community extremely well next year. Orientation Day for our new Year 7 Enrolments Our school campus has been abuzz all day today with Grade Sixers from all over Darwin. They are our new enrolments for next year and they were given a glimpse of O’Loughlin Catholic College during their visit here with us. I wish to thank Cathy Hives, our Head of Middle School, who has worked hard and long to prepare a full and entertaining program for the children. All our policies are published on the school website and I take the opportunity to remind our readers that a condition of enrolment is that the parents/guardians and students agree, and I quote from our enrolment application form, to “support all school policies and practices, including the standards of behaviour, discipline policy, grooming and uniform policy”. Thank you. Presentation Night – Tuesday 13th December, 7.00pm: Finally, a reminder to everyone that the College’s Presentation Night will be held this coming Tuesday evening at 7.00pm at the Entertainment Centre, Mitchell Street, Darwin. All students are required to attend in school uniform. Our Year 12 graduating class members who are receiving an award have the privilege to attend in their graduation outfit. I look forward to see you all there.

Conclusion In conclusion I wish to thank everyone for their support and encouragement to all the school community during the two years I have been Principal of the College. It has been a marvelous experience for me to be at O’Loughlin and I hope that I have left the school in good shape for our next Principal, Mr. Rhett Bowden, as he takes over the helm at the beginning of 2017. In particular, may I thank the members of the College Board who have been a wonderful support. I also wish to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all the members of the College Executive for the ongoing support I have received from them: Mrs Kerryn Katal (DP), Mr Rhett Bowden, Ms Cathy Hives, Ms Tammy Roth and Mr Matthew Bourke. Thank you all and God bless. I wish you God’s blessings as we prepare for the Christmas Season and school holidays. Sincerely.

GENERAL NEWS

Board Chair’s Report, 2016 The O’Loughlin Catholic College Board plays an important advisory role in contributing to the overall wellbeing of the College. The Board is a partnership between school administration, represented by the Principal, the Diocese represented by a parish priest, a representative of the College staff and parents of students. In addition to the regular members of the Board when topics requiring specific expertise are considered the relevant staff of the College from either administration or teaching and curriculum may attend meetings to guide the Board in its decision-making. Thank you to all the staff who either prepared information or made presentations to the Board in 2016. Each year the College hosts a busy diary of events. I want to thank the staff, students, parents and friends of the College that contribute their time and energy to these events. At these events the ethos of the College becomes tangible. I want to reflect on three events I attended. In Term 2 I was able to attend the Pentecost Mass celebrated at the College. In Term 3 I had the opportunity to attend an event where teaching staff presented their professional development projects to their colleagues and in November I attended the Year 12 graduation. These three events demonstrate a celebration of our faith, the recognition and honouring of our colleagues and the recognition of the potential of the young women and men graduating from the College. These events and many other events that we participate in throughout the year bring the beliefs of the College community to life. We owe a vote of gratitude to the organisers of events and to all the hands-on helpers that make College events a success. I want to thank all the staff of the school, the Executive, administration and teaching staff and staff that work in support roles including the canteen and maintenance staff. I also thank the Student Leadership Team for their role in leading students and representing the College at various events throughout the year. I want to thank the members of the College Board for their contributions during 2016. The Board comprises Father Roy O’Neill, Jason Tutty as staff representative, Roslyn Longstaff, Kris Harris, Paul Maher, Tania Jong and Kim Leslie. I especially want to thank Roslyn Longstaff who is leaving the Territory at the end of the year. Roz served as Secretary to the Board during 2016 and her accurate records have been the key to continuity between meetings and issues being followed through. Finally I want to thank James Jolley, our Principal, for his effort and leadership over the past two years. Jim’s diligence and attention to detail means that he leaves the College in good shape for the future. In the Territory where we so often experience an end of year “changing of the guard” Jim should be acknowledged for putting in place sound arrangements for 2017 including supporting the the transition to incoming Principal Rhett Bowden. Thank you Jim. All parents and carers of students are eligible to nominate for the Board at the annual general meeting which will be held in the first term of 2017. Anthony Burton 2016 Board Chair

Neighbourhood Watch can give you peace of mind this holiday season.

The holiday season is upon us and it’s a time when many of us spend time away from home visiting family or going on a summer holiday. Feeling secure in the knowledge that your home and your belongings are safe is an important and comforting part of being away from home. Belonging to a local Neighbourhood Watch Group should be your first step. Knowing that someone is watching your property while you are away will give you peace of mind and has never been easier to organise. Going on holiday is a good reason to go next door and say hi to your neighbour and get them to join an on line NHW Group within your community. Remember neighbours are generally there to help you. Neighbourhood Watch Australasia has made it even easier to connect with your neighbours with the launch of the free NHWConnect App. All you need to do is sign up to or create an online Neighbourhood Watch Group, and keep in touch with what’s happening in your street while you are away. Go to www.nhwconnect.com.au and start your group now! It’s never been easier. NHWConnect can be used through your computer and your mobile phone simultaneously. You can download a mobile connection to your smart phone for easy access to information, whilst knowing the information will also be available to you on your computer. Ensuring no lost information. Most importantly, unlike other advertised communication Apps, your private information is not and cannot be shared with anyone or sold to anyone. Your information is secure and encrypted. Before you go on holiday remember to secure your home and property:

• Ask neighbours and friends to keep an eye on the property • Check doors and windows are locked • Arrange for mail and newspapers to be collected • Make sure you have marked your valuables and recorded serial numbers • Where possible, hide valuables • Set the burglar alarm • Set timer switches for lighting
