COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES, FORESTRY, AND AGRICULTURE Nursing ABOUT THE PROGRAM The University of Maine established the nursing program in 1939, creating the first baccalaureate program for nurses in Maine. The nursing program later became a School of Nursing in 1958. Our graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree in Nursing was first offered in 1992. Originally developed as a family nurse practitioner program, our graduate options now include a concentration in nursing education and individualized programs of study (I-MSN). The BSN and MSN programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and are approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing. The School of Nursing is philosophically linked with the University of Maine’s mission to be the state’s center for learning, discovery and service to the public. Faculty and students of the school serve as a vital resource to the people of Maine through clinical practice, scholarly activities and leadership roles. OUR FACULTY UMaine nursing students benefit from faculty who are expert nurses in their areas of specialization in addition to being skilled educators and scholars. In the classroom, practice laboratories and clinical settings, students are challenged to base their nursing care on the best available evidence and to critically analyze their practice, always striving for optimal outcomes for patients, families and communities. OUR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM (BSN) Preparing nurses for the increasingly diverse and global health care system, where change is rapid and constant, is a challenge embraced by the School of Nursing. Nurses educated for the 21st century must be prepared for continued change, expanded roles, a variety of health care settings, and use of technology. The rigorous undergraduate program includes: • A state-of-the-art Learning Resource Center (LRC) for mastery of basic and complex nursing knowledge and skills. The LRC includes modern hospital equipment and life-like manikins and patient simulators that foster students’ skills and confidence in the provision of safe, effective patient care prior to their direct-care experiences in clinical agencies. • Extensive clinical experiences in acute-care and long-term care facilities including Eastern Maine Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center, Acadia Hospital as well as other hospitals and skilled and long-term care facilities around the state. • Community-based experiences offered through affiliations with numerous local and rural community health agencies, schools, specialty clinics such as pediatric and maternal health, and occupational health settings. To be considered for admission to the BSN program, current high school students need to have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, SAT scores of 1120 or higher or 23 on the ACT, and GPA of 3.3 in English (four years), biology, chemistry, and mathematics (algebra and geometry). High school students with lower SAT scores must demonstrate a higher overall GPA. Progression to the 200-level nursing courses is contingent upon successful completion of 47 credit hours, which includes all sciences, math and social science prerequisite courses for the nursing major, with “C” or better, a science GPA of 3.0 and a cumulative GPA of 3.0. OUR GRADUATE PROGRAM Graduates of our MSN or CAS program excel in their chosen professional roles. Family nurse practitioner (FNP) graduates excel on national certification examinations and they transition to the role of primary care provider in practices throughout Maine and beyond. programs through acquisition of skills in thedevelopment of curricula, learning activities and the assessment of learning outcomes. Anindividualized-MSN option is available fornurses who wish to focus on administration orother professional roles.

The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Educationprogram (10 credits) prepares expert BSN-prepared nurses for the role of educator, particularly as clinical and laboratory instructorsin undergraduate nursing programs and as staffeducators in clinical agencies.

OSNA is a student-run organization whichengages students in community serviceprojects, fosters professional developmentthrough informative programs, promotesleadership in state and national health careforums, and provides peer mentorship fornursing students.

Sigma Theta Tau International NursingHonor SocietyAcademically qualified nursing students areinvited to join Omicron Xi Chapter-at-Largeof Sigma Theta Tau International, the honorsociety of nursing.

UMaine College of Military Science andLeadershipThe Army and the Navy Reserve OfficersTraining Corps (ROTC) prepare students fora nursing career in the U.S. military. ROTCnursing students are offered outstandingsummer preceptorships in U.S. militaryhospitals. Upon completion of the BSN, theArmy ROTC graduate is commissioned as aSecond Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and theNavy ROTC graduate is commissioned as anEnsign in the U.S. Navy.
