8.8 Language After First YearThe language is available only in the B.Comm. International programmes after first year.

9. Bachelor of Commerce (International Experience) Degree

There is now an opportunity for B Comm students, after they have successfully completed Second Year to apply to transfer to the B Comm (International Experience) Degree. This involves taking an additional year and spending it studying business courses in a university abroad (currently in the USA, Hong Kong and Europe) or combining it with a work placement/ internship for one semester which may be paid or unpaid. In the second option, one semester is spent on work placement and one semester is spent studying at the partner university abroad. Places to studying abroad are limited, therefore, selection for these opportunities will be basedin large part on academic merit. Performance in both the first year and second year university examinations will be a large part of the consideration.

10. General Information

We encourage you to get involved in some of the many clubs and societies located on campus and in particular we strongly encourage you to partake in the NUI Galway volunteering programme ALIVE. Check out www.nuigalway.ie/alive for more details. In the Business School we provide for your academic development over the course of your programme. Elsewhere in the university there are opportunities for you to engage in activities to aid your personal development and growth.

The Business Society

BizSoc aims to get more students in the university thinking about business by opening their mind to new ideas and opportunities. It helps students who want to get involved in any form of business in the future by allowing students with similar interests to mix with each other, organisehigh profile events and to hear and learn from successful people outside of the lecture hall.It is also one of the best social societies in NUI Galway. The main events hosted by the Business Society are trips away in Ireland, speaker engagements with well known business people, the NUI Galway International Mystery Trip, and of course the occasion of the year: The NUI Galway Commerce Ball. The society is proudly sponsored by KPMG who are a leading international firm of chartered accountants and business advisers. The more people involved in the society the better for everyone. You can get involved at committee or class rep level, or take part by simply attending and enjoying our events. For more information and to sign up please visit: www.nuigbizsoc.com oremail [email protected].

10.1 Necessity of lecture and tutorial attendanceStudents are required to follow a course of study by attendance and participation at lectures, practicals and tutorials as timetabled. There is clear evidence to show that success in examinations is linked to attendance and active participation at lectures and tutorials.

10.2 Study Abroad, Internships and other Opportunities in Future Years of the ProgrammeSelection for study abroad, internships and other opportunities will be based on academic merit. Selection will, in many cases, depend on the student’s performance in the first year university examinations. Selection for teams to represent the Business School and university will also be partly based on academic merit. First year university results are frequently a consideration.

10.3 Change of mind date – for optional first year moduleStudents can register online for their first year option (Skills to Succeed & Business Law, or

German or Spanish) and go back in to change anytime up to 21st Sept 2012. Online Registration will open again on 27th and 28th September for ‘Change of Mind’. For further information go to the registration website www.nuigalway.ie/registration

10.4 BlackboardBlackboard is the NUI Galway virtual learning environment. On Blackboard you will find modules for each of your subjects. These modules are maintained by the subject lecturers and are the primary recourse for lecture notes and course materials. Notes and course materials available on Blackboard are not a substitute for lecture attendance.

10.5 Code of ConductPlease be advised that as a student of NUI Galway you are required to abide by the NUI Galway Code of Conduct. The code of conduct applies to all university related activities whether located on or off campus. You can familiarise yourself with the code of conduct on www.nuigalway.ie/codeofconduct

10.6 Withdrawing from the programmeIf at any stage you decide to withdraw from your course, you may do so by filling in a withdrawal form at the Admissions Office. However, before doing so we strongly recommend that you speak to the staff of the School Office or to the Programme Director. Please see contact details at the end of this student guide.

10.7 General University AdvisoryThere are several sources of advice that will be available throughout your time at NUI, Galway. Some students may find the transition from school to University unsettling; it can be lonely at times and hard to be away from home. Don’t feel you need to keep these problems to yourself. Talk to someone about them. Often the best source of advice can be from fellow students. The Students Union at NUI Galway are very active in assisting students in getting the most out of college life and we encourage you to become familiar with your union. You will find a wealth of useful information on www.su.nuigalway.ie and if you want to know what’s really happening on campus be sure to click on the SIN link.
