Message from the Dean

there’s a new direction in business leadership at ecu. By building on the solid foundation laid throughout the past 75 years, we’re now doing even more to prepare the next generation of leaders. And we’re so grateful to all of those who give back and help make this vision possible. for decades, the college of Business has done an excellent job teaching students the technical material necessary for success in the business world. in today’s economy, though, that is no longer enough. A revamped curriculum for undergraduate students now emphasizes leadership, professionalism, and communication skills. While not compromising our long history of teaching strong technical skills, the leadership and professional Development program teaches students how to “think, Act, and lead” regardless of their job title or position. the bar is set high for students, with personalized support coming from a network of mentors, advisors, and coaches. it is a groundbreaking program— the first of its kind— and i’m proud of all we’ve accomplished. As part of this effort, the college’s final senior-level leadership capstone course was launched this past year. now throughout a student’s four years, specialized leadership courses give important insight into today’s business world and the skills needed to be competitive. Also, earlier this fall we established the college’s first-ever living-learning community—a place where freshman business students have the option of joining a unique, inclusive residential learning experience that connects classroom learning with residence life. Students proposed this idea last year as something that would add value to the ecu experience, and now it is a reality. to update you on the administrative side, we have a fantastic team of leaders in place. Dr. paul Schwager now serves as associate dean for the college of Business. paul, an associate professor in the Department of Management information Systems, previously served as the college’s assistant dean for assessment, accreditation, and curriculum. even more recently, Dr. Shanan Gibson joined our team as associate dean for student and faculty development, taking over for Maggie o’Hara who was appointed director of e-learning for the university of north carolina General Administration this past summer. Shanan is an associate professor in the Department of Management, and she brings a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm. throughout this issue of the annual report, i hope you enjoy reading about our faculty, alumni, and students who give back in so many ways, making our college of Business stronger every year. thank you for helping us invest in a brighter future as we lead tomorrow’s business leaders. We can’t do it without your support.

Warm Regards, Stanley G. eakinsDean, college of Business

TEACHiNG pHiLOSOpHy: “I think my teaching philosophy would be to have a great deal of interaction with the students and not focus so much on trying to get them to absorb a bunch of information but [instead] utilize information and put it into practice. My opinion is they learn the most by doing rather than reading or listening.”

Dr. Bill McDowell will enter his seventh year at ECU in fall 2012. He joined the Pirate Nation because he had met some of the faculty members and knew of the school from people who attended it. He is now an associate professor, teaching entrepreneurship and family business in the College of Business.

“It just seemed like a great opportunity to come out and teach entrepreneurship,” he says. McDowell earned his bachelor of science in Christian ministry from Southwestern Christian University in 1993; a MBA in strategic management from California State University in 2002; and a PhD from the University of North Texas in 2006. His research interests include interorganizational relationships, entrepreneurship, and small and family business.

McDowell has written articles for various publications such as the Journal of Business Issues, Journal of Small Business Strategy, and the Journal of Organizational Leadership and Business on topics including the performance of underrepresented firms in the public-private sector; strategic relationships in a small business; and the effect of trust on business performance. McDowell has received research grants from both the US Health Resources and Services Administration and ECU’s College of Business.

In 2012, McDowell was given the Commerce Club Faculty Teaching Award. In 2011–2012, he was chosen as ECU’s engagement and outreach scholar, a position that includes funding for research. He has also been awarded with the Best Research Paper Award from the Small Business Institute and helped his student team win the Paper of the Year Award from the institute in the 2010–2011 year. He has also presented expert testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Small Business Committee on a hearing titled, “Large and Small Businesses: How Partnerships Can Promote Job Growth”.

McDowell has served as both a faculty advisor and a peer reviewer. He has also served as a consultant for business development for the College of Nursing master’s program and a faculty representative to HAN University in the Netherlands, as well as the vice president for research and publications for the Small Business Institute. He is also a member of the Small Business Institute, the Academy of Management, the Institute of Behavioral and Applied Management, and the Southern Academy of Management.

Dr. April Reed is an assistant professor for management information systems in the College of Business. Entering her fifth year at ECU in fall 2012, Reed teaches systems analysis and design, database systems, and systems quality. In addition to her role as an instructor, Reed’s research interests include virtual project teams and health information technology.

Reed earned her BA in public administration from Roosevelt University in 1978; her BSG in computer science from Roosevelt University in 1982; her MBA, with a focus in management information systems, from DePaul University in 1990; and her PhD in information systems from DePaul in 2008. She is also certified as a PMI Project Management Professional.

In 2012, Reed was the recipient of the New Faculty Teaching Award at East Carolina University—an honor that she was both shocked and “very happy” to have received. Prior to her academic career, she had held various jobs as a programmer, systems analyst, and project manager for companies such as Washington National Life Insurance Company—where she was a programmer—Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (where she was a project leader) and Commonwealth Edison Electric Utility (as a technical systems analyst).

At ECU, her teaching interests include management information systems, IT project management, requirements analysis and development, and systems analysis and design. She has written articles and proceedings on virtual project risk factors, the risk differences between virtual and co-located projects, and the effect of a team environment on project risks related to communication that have been published in the Journal of Information Technology Management, the Internal Journal of Information Technology Project Management, the International Journal of Project Management, and the Journal of Computer Information Systems.

Her current research includes surveying 600 participants as part of an effort to conduct MANCOVA analysis using SPSS and creating a survey for a new research stream. She also served as a reviewer of the new edition of the Introduction to MIS textbook published by McGraw Hill; Reed reviewed two chapters in the volume in 2010–2011.

FAvOriTE THiNG ABOuT ECu STuDENTS: “Definitely their spirit. I was interacting with a student yesterday, a new student who will be in my graduate class this fall. He talked about how he works hard and plays hard. And so I wrote back, ‘Then you are a true Pirate!’ In my view, that is an unofficial slogan.”

CLASSES TAuGHT: Advertising, social media marketing

TEACHiNG pHiLOSOpHy: “My philosophy is that I’m here to create opportunities for students or prepare them for opportunities that come to them in other ways. That’s everything that I’m about.”

Dr. Tracy Tuten graduated from East Carolina in 1988 with a bachelor of science in business administration. She earned her master of business administration from ECU in 1990 and her doctor of philosophy in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, in 1996.

Tuten came back to East Carolina in July 2009 to fill the role of associate professor of marketing, a position that has allowed her to teach advertising and social-media marketing and marketing research to undergraduates as well as advertising and promotion to her graduate-level students. She wanted to give to the university that had given her the chance to excel in her career.

“I got a great education here and I’ve had a fair amount of success in the role that I’ve played,” she says. “I’ve had two Fulbrights, I’ve written five books. For a kid from little Washington, I’ve done alright for myself, and I would say that it’s because of the education I got at East Carolina. Coming back as faculty was a chance to give back to the university that did so much for me.”

Tuten is the author of five books. She has written chapters for publications and published 40 articles for journals including Marketing Education Review, the International Journal of Management Theory and Practices, and the Small Business Institute Journal. Tuten has received several awards and recognitions, including the Best Paper in Track Award for Marketing Education at the Direct Marketing Research Summit in 2011 and the O’Hara Leadership Award in Direct & Interactive Marketing Education in 2009. She has served as a guest professor at the Stockholm School of Economics, the ICHEC Brussels Management School in Belgium, and the Zagreb School of Economics and Management.

In addition to her teaching duties at ECU, Tuten served as last year’s social media advisor in the College of Business as well as a faculty mentor and a member of the Research and Creative Activity Committee. In past years, she has also served as a faculty leader for an advertising career conference and as a member of the planning team for the Office of Faculty Excellence Summer Institute on Teaching with Technology.

FAvOriTE THiNG ABOuT ECu STuDENTS: “They work hard and they play hard. They have a good balance of both, I think. They’re down to earth and they’re not over-privileged. They’re hard working. They like to have fun, but they know when to get serious and do what they’re supposed to do.”

CLASSES TAuGHT: Property and casualty insurance, senior topics in insurance

TEACHiNG pHiLOSOpHy: “First of all, I treat my students like peers rather than I’m somehow above them or superior to them. … My attitude is, we’re all in this together and we’re trying to achieve a common goal, which is to make them more marketable and prepare them for a career. My job is to make sure that they get to where they want to be and to achieve the goals that they have set. My philosophy is to give them the tools they need to be successful when they graduate in whatever it is they choose to do. I’m very practical, very no-nonsense. I do work for them. That does not mean they get to tell me what grade to give, but I do work for them and I get the joy of teaching them. To me, that is a privilege.”

Dr. Brenda Wells, associate professor of finance and director of ECU’s risk management and insurance program, earned her BBA in risk management and insurance from the University of Georgia in 1988 and received a PhD in risk management from Georgia in 1992. She has worked as a consultant with Leverett Associates and is the owner of Wells and Associates.

Before Wells accepted a position at East Carolina, she was a faculty member at the University of North Texas, where she served as both an assistant professor (1992–1998) and an associate professor (1998–2009). She chose to come to ECU because she was offered an opportunity to do what her mentors, whom she describes as some of the finest program builders in risk management, had trained her to do: build a program.

“Also, the support of the administration to have this program and to build it, to make it successful … that was the big feature,” she says. “That was the real appeal, because we had the support of the university, the support of the insurance industry, and you cannot have a successful risk management program without those two things and they were already in place.”

Wells co-authored the 2008 book Risk Management Self with E. J. Leverett. She has written various papers on insurance issues, risk and insurance, and insurance regulation for publications including the CPCU Journal, the Journal of Insurance Regulation, and the Journal of Services Marketing.

She has been recognized for her skills in the classroom. She was awarded both the Outstanding Teaching Assistant and Excellence in Teaching awards from the University of Georgia for the 1990–1991 academic year, as well as the Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of North Texas Council of Business Students in both 1998–1999 and 2004–2005.

kENDELL HArriSThe one-on-one attention that College of Business professors and advisors give each student is impressive to Kendell Harris. Even with a large number of students seeking knowledge and advice, the college feels small and close-knit. “From day one, the professors and advisors took time out to get to know me as an individual,” Harris says. The Perquimans County native is pursuing his master’s degree in accounting, with hopes of eventually working for the likes of Ernst

& Young LLP. Wherever his career takes him, he hopes to continue volunteering and participating in community-improvement activities. “That’s something that’s important to me,” Harris says. He has been active in Beta Alpha Psi, the College of Business’s accounting honor society. In the spirit of giving and receiving individual support, he volunteered at the Pirate Tutoring Center, giving students the academic boost they need to succeed. That experience helped him hone his own classroom success strategies. “It helped me

G E n E R A T i O n O f E x C E L L E n C E

20 ECU College of Business HighlightsStudent Highlightsreally get grounded in accounting,” he says. As a transfer student from Pitt Community College, Harris was drawn to the dynamic College of Business and its wealth of knowledge and active-learning environment. His research of business schools around the state also pointed him toward ECU. “The transition felt good,” he says, and he embraced the Leadership and Professional Development program, blending classroom learning with hands-on practice in leadership, communication skills, and professionalism. “One thing that’s helped me a lot has been having that real-life experience,” he says. “We work with different groups, hear different perspectives, and utilize all of the things we’ve learned in lessons.” The program also simulates real-world business situations. “One strength of the leadership program is that it really prepares you for working with the diverse backgrounds of the people you meet in the workplace,” Harris says. The people he’s met so far through the college’s special programs stand out the most to him. One of the best experiences for him has been alumni networking events, during which he has talked with and established professional relationships with alumni in his field. He also established bonds with professors that he hopes will last well into his career. Those professors have encouraged his search for leadership roles within the college that have taught Harris about himself and his strengths and weaknesses. “I’ve learned how to keep on working until the job gets done,” he says. “I’ve learned how to be dedicated. I’ve learned to identify my own strengths and how to utilize them.” To Harris, there’s no question about the unique qualities and opportunities of the College of Business. “Other schools can help you get a job,” he says, “but at ECU’s College of Business, you continue to succeed after you get a job.”

ECU College of Business 21HighlightsJACk prAGErIt was fortunate happenstance that led Jack Prager to ECU. The senior business finance major from East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, set out online to find the right college for him, and his most important criteria—a large school with a close-knit, spirited feel—were the perfect fit with what East Carolina had to offer. Almost immediately, he was drawn to the dynamic College of Business, where he explored a variety of majors through fairs and information sessions before choosing the one for him. He listened to numerous alumni share their own success stories and felt compelled to join their ranks. “I felt most connected to the College of Business,” Prager says. “It was something that had a lot of possibilities, and I chose finance, which is less broad but still has flexibility.” Awarded the Gourley Scholarship in 2012, which provides a semester of in-state tuition, Prager has made his mark on the College of Business during his tenure. He is a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, the business fraternity; serves as a peer mentor for the college; and works as an assistant and blogger in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Through the fraternity, he not only helps arrange speakers, special events, and fundraisers, but he observes how the organization provides the opportunity to practice running a business. “It definitely gives you different perspectives of the business world,” he says. Each member is assigned to a committee, and each committee has tasks that must be completed in order for events and goals to come together. “It’s like running your own business,” says Prager. Through the fraternity, Prager also actively adheres to the college’s emphasis on service by volunteering for organizations including Give2theTroops, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and the Ronald McDonald House. As a peer mentor

for the college, he guides freshman business majors toward opportunities that will make their educational experience more valuable and memorable. “I help other people succeed based on what I’ve learned so far,” he says. That kind of opportunity for growth is abundant in the College of Business, Prager points out. Choosing his major and college put him at an advantage by providing him avenues to learn from others. “The College of Business sets up a lot of opportunities for people to network,” he says. He also appreciates that while he focuses on finance, he receives instruction in all areas of business, equipping him with the

best possible background for a career in a global market. College of Business professors have also taught him how to stand out among competitors, both individually and representing a business. By giving multiple presentations through course work, “I got out of my comfort zone, and now it’s easier for me to talk in front of others,” Prager says. The rigorous education and field of opportunities are not surprising to him, based on the reputation of the College of Business. Special programs like the Leadership and Professional Development Program ensures that every graduate of the school emerges as a leader. “The College of Business is top tier,” Prager says.

MAriSA MELCHiOrrEMarisa Melchiorre is taking her College of Business education worldwide. The senior international business–European studies concentration major from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, has traveled and studied internationally, ensuring her expertise in a boundless business marketplace. Melchiorre studied French language and culture at La Sorbonne in Paris, and traveled to the Netherlands with the College of Business under the study-abroad program. “One of my best experiences in college would be the study-abroad trip to the Netherlands,” she says. “It was such

an amazing trip that included traveling with professors and fellow Pirates. I met students from around the world and shared my experiences on the College of Business blog.” She plans to apply what she’s learned around the world to earning a master’s degree in business administration and potentially a master’s degree in sustainable tourism. “I hope to acquire a job here in North Carolina working for a global corporation in a position promoting sustainability,” Melchiorre says. “I expect to gain knowledge from other countries and apply their sustainability best practices here in the United States.” Melchiorre may think globally, but she’s also

making a difference here at home. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, and has been a peer mentor for the College of Business and a French tutor for the Pirate Tutoring Center. She has participated in the Emerging Leaders program and the Leadership Reading Circle, and spent two years on ECU’s all-female cheerleading squad. She also has served as a volunteer at Greenville’s Carver Library. This past summer, she completed an internship in the accounting department of FedEx Ground in Pittsburgh. “It exposed me to corporate culture and allowed me to apply my College of Business academic knowledge to a global corporation.” She balances the extracurricular activities with studying and taking advantage of the college’s offerings. “I chose the ECU College of Business because of the great leadership programs and international studies that were offered,” Melchiorre says. “During my freshman year, my decision to attend ECU was validated by the outstanding and supportive faculty and advising staff. Collectively, they have inspired me to become a better student and participate in many of the activities on campus and in the College of Business.” Another hand of guidance from the college has been the requirement for each student to maintain a portfolio. Melchiorre says the portfolios help students showcase to potential employers their level of experience and knowledge earned during undergraduate study. It motivates students to use the resources around them and to perform volunteer activities. Through other college initiatives, she also has sharpened her independence, adaptability, leadership, accountability, and patience. “I can now successfully make sound decisions and handle multiple priorities and activities,” she says. “My college experience has taught me to take full advantage of every opportunity that presents itself in the hopes of opening new doors along the way.”

kETurAH MAyBErryKeturah Mayberry wants to make a positive mark on the world—and she feels the College of Business is giving her the tools to do it. The senior accounting and management major from Edenton, North Carolina, has learned lessons beyond the classroom through the college’s many networking, volunteer, and career-oriented programs and opportunities. Confident in her skills, Mayberry, a senior, is ready to find solutions to emerging issues in her professional field and answers to problems within the community. “Service is going to help me be a better professional,” she says. “What I’ve learned in the College of Business will help me be a better person and give back. I know that my focus should not be only on myself, but the overall success of my business and helping others.” Mayberry grew up knowing she wanted to study business, and entered the college as a freshman. She immediately participated in as many activities and opportunities as she could, including resume workshops, visits from successful alumni, and application to numerous internships and interviews for experience. “Everyone in the college is helping me succeed by giving me different avenues and letting me know about interesting opportunities,” she says. “I love how everyone—professors, advisors, the Career Center—helps you, including writing reference letters. We have really great faculty.” The overall focus on student success within the college makes a difference to students like Mayberry by shaping them into professionals early on. They graduate confident and equipped to compete in a global market. Leadership programs “help students actually focus on being more professional,” she says. One of her favorite programs for College of Business students is the etiquette dinners, during which students experience a business social event in a dining

atmosphere. “That was the most hands-on for me,” she says. Mayberry also plans to continue to attend guest speakers’ presentations before graduation to learn as much as possible from successful business professionals. The key to success so far for Mayberry, who plans to attend graduate school next year, was hitting the ground running. She advises other students to do the same. “Try to decide what you want to do early,” she says, “so you don’t get delayed. Work hard and play hard, in that order. Then you’ll have peace of mind.” The College of Business also has helped Mayberry’s spirit of service thrive. She volunteers

at the American Cancer Society’s McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge and the Salvation Army. She also is the treasurer for the Golden Key international honor society, vice president of service for the college’s chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management, treasurer for the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, and a member of Beta Alpha Psi, the college’s accounting honor society. These experiences, she believes, will be a strong basis for her career. “I’ve always wanted to make a change in the world,” Mayberry says. “Before you can do that, you have to make a change in you, be a better you before you can help someone else change.”

Honor Society

Beta Gamma SigmaFounded in 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma is the national honor society for collegiate schools of business. Chapters may only be chartered with programs accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest national recognition a student of business can receive in an undergraduate or masters program at a school accredited by the AACSB. Of the 1,600

institutions with degree programs in business, only 504 are accredited by the AACSB with 408 currently having active chapters of Beta Gamma Sigma. To be eligible for membership, a student must rank in the top of his or her class.

The Gamma Chapter at ECU is proud to have been inducting academically superior undergraduate students since 1967. The master of business administration program has been accredited and has been honoring graduate level students since 1976.

Highlights

Alumni of the College of Business are essential pillars to our success. These are the people who know the College better than anyone—they have experienced what the College of Business has to offer and know the value of having a business degree from ECU. Alumni also serve as our greatest champions, helping the College continue its strong tradition of preparing tomorrow’s leaders. Alumni play many critical roles for the College, too—returning to teach, counseling students, serving on advisory boards to the College, and providing financial resources for the programs needed to execute our mission. This tradition of giving back has been in place since the College’s beginnings almost 75 years ago, and thousands of alumni show their support each year by making contributions, both time and money. Just as important, our alumni serve as examples of success for current and future students. In this section of the Annual Report, we recognize the accomplishments of just a few of our thousands of outstanding alumni each year. In this issue, we highlight Bill Furr, Rob Jones, Kevin Monroe, Kel Normann, Donna Phillips and Harry Smith. These individuals have excelled in their careers, demonstrating service to their communities and to the College of Business. In both the business and civic arenas, they continue to better the world around them through their actions. It is no accident that these alumni hold close to their hearts the extraordinary qualities that were instilled in them while in the College of Business—just as these qualities are instilled in students today. We thank all of our alumni who continue to make a difference at ECU, at home, and across the globe.

Bill fuRR(BuSA ’65)East Carolina University began to shape Bill Furr’s life before he even entered a classroom on campus. Like all incoming students, he was attending Orientation in Wright Auditorium with a group of friends when he met a group of women living in Umstead. One in particular caught his eye, Emily, and they were married four years later. “The university has been such a major influence in our family’s life,” says Furr. “There are 100,000

alumni scattered around the world and it’s hard to verbalize what ECU means to people’s personal and professional lives.” When Furr arrived in Greenville, he was presented with opportunities to explore new ideas, which he embraced. “ECU gave me, a young kid from Statesville, a perspective that I wouldn’t have if I had not gone to school,” he says. “I met students from New York, D.C., and Virginia, and that was invaluable. The whole education process, especially liberal arts, caused me to grow and it couldn’t have happen without that base. I still remember the projects today and have throughout all the years.” Furr has been a part of the university’s and College of Business’s growth and improvement since his time as a student in the early 60s. During the mid 80s, Furr’s interest in the COB was renewed when his son was a business student. He became an active member of the Business Advisory Council for the COB and, according to Furr, “hit it off ” with Ernie Uhr, who was dean at the time. “The Business Advisory Council gave us the opportunity to get back with college’s professors and other professionals,” says Furr, who is still an active member. “It expanded because of Ernie’s determination to get people involved who were once in the business world. The professors were learning as much as students.” After graduating in 1965, Furr was presented with numerous job offers, but accepted a position with DuPont that took him to New York City after a brief stint in Charlotte. He worked in the Garment District of NYC for DuPont for eight years, where he sold knitting yarns, and with other companies in the garment industry. “I was blessed with a series of jobs and opportunities in the garment trade. DuPont and the Army moved me to New York City, and I was out of my element,” said Furr. “I had never been further north of Portsmith, Virginia. It was a great experience with entirely different folks than I was raised with.” From spinning yarn to fabric to ladies wear to sportswear, Furr worked with all types of textiles at varying points in the industry. Furr made his way back to the Charlotte area working with a yarn company that he bought and later sold for Cumulus Fibers, which focused

on nonwoven materials, like furniture stuffing, bedding and air filtration. The company grew from $4 million to $40 million by the time he sold it in 1998. The Furrs split their time between Blowing Rock in the summer and Vero Beach, Florida, in the winter and are members of the Chancellor’s Society. He has served on a number of committees and campaigns including the Board of Trustees that has helped develop ECU academically and athletically over the years. “Giving back is so easy when you’re involved in campus life,” says Furr, who was a part of the Old Austin Building cupola project and has worked on the Privateer’s Deck alongside his wife. “You get a sense of the impact the university has on people with the addition of the medical school and dental school, especially the impact on the state of North Carolina and eastern North Carolina. It is significant. It’s the reason why I’m so proud.”

RoB JoneS(BSBA, MktG ’78)As one of the newest members of the College of Business Advisory Council, Rob Jones has a special understanding of turning success in the classroom into a fruitful career. Jones, of Greenville, is president and CEO of the little bank Inc., which operates six full-service branches in eastern North Carolina and is headquartered in Kinston. Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in 1978 in business administration and marketing, and is eager to once again play an active role in the college and make it the best it can be through mission and accomplishment. His journey through the college as a student was a milestone itself. “I began to mold the rest of my life on my own,” Jones says of his beginning at ECU. “I was the first person in my family to go to college to pursue a four-year degree, which made college somewhat of a historic event.” While he valued his time at East Carolina, his goal was ultimately to jumpstart a career as soon as possible, applying what he learned in the classroom to real life. Jones’s career includes experience and

management positions with NCNB/Nations-bank/Bank of America. He showed talent early on for growing and nurturing loan portfolios, and worked his way up to most recently serving as the Carolina community marketing executive, developing rural market and strategy and managing commercial banking activities in 14 rural markets in the Carolinas. For the 2000 fiscal year, he was recognized as one of the top 100 customer-service leaders in net income growth. “I had significant training and development all along, and many mentors that helped me succeed,” Jones says, “but it all started with my business degree from ECU.” He has led the little bank Inc. for the past 10 years, and the successful company houses branches in Kinston, Goldsboro, Jacksonville, Greenville, New Bern, and La Grange. Jones believes in getting involved and making a difference wherever he can. He is a member of the Kinston Community Health Center board, and he serves as chair of the investment committee of the ECU Medical and Health Sciences Foundation board. “I agreed to serve because of my commitment to ECU as well as my desire

to make a contribution to health care,” he says. That desire to serve extends to the College of Business Advisory Council, through which Jones plans to interact with students and help make their College of Business experience as close to the professional world as possible. “I want there to be no doubt that they have been prepared to compete in the ever-changing business environment of today and the future,” Jones says. He is eager to share advice with students—his most staunch belief is in personal branding centered around integrity, credibility, competence, work ethic, and intelligence. “We need to teach young people that they are always building a brand that stands for something,” he says. Jones recently was invited to speak to students in Beta Gamma Sigma, the premier business honor society. “It was a great treat to be around energetic and bright young people,” he says. “It was also inspiring for me that they had a genuine interest in what I had to say. Living and working in Greenville will allow me to spend more time with students and faculty in the future, and I look forward to being able to contribute in that regard.”

keVin MonRoe(BSBA ’99, MGMt ’99, MBA ’05)From the moment Greenville native Kevin Monroe stepped foot on campus as a freshman, he knew the College of Business was where he wanted to study. His father earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business at ECU, and Monroe set out to do the same. As an undergraduate student, Monroe played football and baseball for ECU, and his passion for athletics, finance, and ECU has shaped his career ever since. Monroe is the vice president and financial advisor with Captrust in Raleigh, North Carolina, and advises roughly 80 NFL players on investing, spending, and preserving their income. With the help of COB professors, Monroe scored three interviews after graduation and accepted an offer from Wachovia Financial Securities in Greenville that lead to an unusual opportunity. “During that job, I read our ads during [home] football games,” he says. “Then, I became a sideline reporter.” Monroe started working as a co-analyst for Pirate Radio on the weekends and just celebrated his 10th season of radio broadcasting and 11th year as an advisor. Monroe has not only stayed connected with the athletic department, but has also been voted onto the Business Advisory Council within the College of Business. “We are the eyes and ears of business world for professors,” he says. “We help plan classes and add and drop courses. I get a lot out of it because we’re bettering the program.” What keeps Monroe most active in the university’s academics is serving on the ECU Foundation board. “I learn what we’re doing for scholarship recipients,” says Monroe. “We see the advancement of the university, including the dental, medical and nursing schools. The College of Business now has four-year students. We’re growing in recognition and we continue to get bigger and better.” When Monroe was in the classroom, he valued the college’s incorporation of real-world application and models. “It’s like the experience before the experience,” he said. As a student, a few professors played key roles in Monroe’s success: Anne Fisher, Roy Simerly, and Doug Schneider. Fisher, who is now the director of professional programs, was quick to learn her students’ names and made sure students “got it,” according to Monroe. Simerly, who is a professor in the department of management, was Monroe’s professor for the course Business Policy, which he said was his hardest class. “It was tough getting through it,” says Monroe. “I studied hard and gave it

my maximum effort, and he helped push me.” Schneider, a professor in the department of accounting, took a particular interest in Monroe’s performance as a student-athlete. “He wanted to make sure I was doing well with the extra work and getting done what I needed to,” says Monroe. “He helped me prepare for my MBA.” Like his father, Monroe returned to ECU to earn his MBA. He enrolled in the college’s online courses and continued to work full-time.

“I wouldn’t replace it for anything,” he says. “I worked full-time and went back to school while I was living in Raleigh. In undergrad, I played two sports and needed extra help from being away playing, and I never had a bad experience. I am thankful for the College of Business and all they helped me do.” Monroe lives in Durham with his wife, Dr. Rasheeda Monroe, who is pediatrician and a graduate of the Brody School of Medicine at ECU.

kel noRMAnn(BSBA, MktG ’85)Kel Normann wants students in ECU’s College of Business to have a wealth of opportunities to succeed—the same benefits that helped him become a leader in his field. Normann, of Sanford, is the managing director for the Normann Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors and counsels clients on decision-making and complex issues related to investment and estate planning. Over the years, he has been active not only in his professional community but with numerous civic organizations and educational institutions. East Carolina’s students have felt the impact of his generosity. “Giving back and knowing I’m helping others to really get the education and experience that I had is part of the

responsibility of being successful,” Normann says. In his first days at ECU—following in both parents’ footsteps—he thought he wanted to follow a path toward becoming a dentist. Then he enrolled in business courses. The personal attention from professors, the skills he learned to help him focus on the future, and the opportunities for challenge and growth won Normann over. “I got more serious about school once I got into the College of Business,” he says. Normann also knows that other serious students are finding it more difficult to afford an education, so he established the W. Kel Normann Business Scholarship, which recognizes annually a full-time undergraduate business major who displays superior academic achievement and demonstrates financial need. Normann and his family also give to the EC Scholars program each

year and provide funding for an Access Scholarship every year. “East Carolina was good to me,” he says. “I feel that my education and experience at ECU and my involvement since graduation are big parts of my success.” Part of what contributes to College of Business students’ success is the quality of professors, Normann said. “The professors really got engaged with us,” he says. “They wanted to see you grow as a student and as an individual.” The college’s offerings of interactive experience with professors and “real-world” events including speeches from alumni and etiquette dinners also help prepare students to achieve in the professional arena. To Normann, business graduates need to know how to communicate on many levels to showcase their career expertise. “Communication skills are the strongest backbone of success,” he says. Normann has certainly maintained communication with ECU. A past member of the College of Business Advisory Council, he has served on the ECU Foundation board for 13 years, and has been chairman of the board’s investment committee for 10 years. Normann is a member of the Order of the Cupola, the Chancellor’s Society, the Old Austin Society, and the Leo W. Jenkins Society. He is a life member of the East Carolina Alumni Association and supports the ECU Educational Foundation (Pirate Club). Normann serves on the Board of Trustees for Meredith College, and was one of the founding members of the Lee County Boys and Girls Club and the Lee County Education Foundation. He has served as chairman for both boards, as well as the boards of the Sanford Rotary Club, Central Carolina Community College Foundation, and the O’Neal School. Although Normann’s main focus has been toward ECU’s College of Business, he also has made contributions to the College of Nursing, College of Human Ecology, Student Life, and the ECU Foundation. Just as he helps guide his clients on their financial paths, Normann is offering his expertise to the College of Business. His hopes for ECU business graduates are that they will be well-rounded, global-economy ready individuals equipped with skills that will lend themselves to strong professional relationships. His advice to students is not to forget the art of one-on-one communication and the importance of writing and speaking skills. “It’s not all about numbers and economics in the real world,” he says. While Normann’s own real-world success stands as an example to future graduates, he won’t forget his days at ECU. “It’s where I got some of the best memories from college,” he says. “It taught me how to apply myself. It taught me to be me. Everyone is different, learns differently, and brings something different to the table.”

DonnA pHillipS(BSBA, MktG ’91, MBA ’94) For the past 13 years, Donna Phillips has shared her experiences from the world of business with East Carolina University’s College of Business students every year since she graduated. As the senior economic developer and manager for the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s industry recruitment efforts for the eastern region since 2004, Phillips has learned that some serious patience and marketing skills are imperative to this job. But, thanks to her education and personality, she has plenty of both. “One of the big highlights for me is flying to corporate headquarters and doing presentations on how great North Carolina is,” says Phillips, a Murfreesboro native. “I love the state, so it’s easy for me.” Some of the companies she is responsible for bringing to the area include West Pharmaceuticals and Sanderson Farms of Kinston, CMI Plastics of Ayden, Metrics Inc. of Greenville, KIOTI Tractors of Wendell, and Smithfield Foods of Wilson, Kinston, Clinton, and Tar Heel. “I match the needs of the company with what North

Carolina has to offer. Some clients have taken five years, but from initial contact to getting them to sign a letter of intent, it usually takes six months to a year.” Her biggest challenge is typically getting the CEOs to make a visit to North Carolina, but when they do, she gives them a tour of her 13-county territory. During her time as a student earning her bachelor of science degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from 1989 to 1991 and MBA from 1991 to 1994, guest speakers made the most impression. “I remember the impact that people like Parker Overton had on me when I was a student. It’s invaluable,” says Phillips, who stays in touch with many professors and guests to the college. In fact, she still calls Overton for advice while preparing for presentations. A more recent career highlight for Phillips has been her appointment to the ECU Board of Visitors where she serves on the Engagement Committee. She helps to determine ways the board can mingle not only with each other, but also with local industries the university supports. “It’s the only meeting that I can wear

purple and gold and everyone gets it,” she says. Since graduation, Phillips gives back to the College of Business through her time speaking to classes and working with students on becoming savvy business professionals as a part of the Leadership and Professional Development Program. From coaching women on professional attire, to men on proper business etiquette during a complicated brunch, to being a representative at all times of the company students go to work for, even during a work function with an open bar, she offers practical advice and insight. Working the room, listening to clients’ needs, and networking are also a part of her professional experiences that she’s able to pass on to students. A milestone Phillips is proud to proclaim is that she was the first woman to hold her title with the Department of Commerce in North Carolina during former Governor Jim Hunt’s term. Now, there are 15 total economic developers and roughly half are women. “I’m always really proud of that,” says Phillips. “Before, it used to be a handshake on the golf course and it’s not like that anymore.”

HARRy SMitH(BSBA, MGMt ’92)Flanders Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Harry L. Smith Jr. found success not far from home. Smith, who is from Clayton, North Carolina, has worked for

the company located just outside of Greenville in Washington for 14 years. Smith came to ECU not knowing what he wanted to study. The broad application and impact of business along with his affection for numbers drew him toward the College of Business. Most of his college career,

Smith claims that he was an average student until one class in particular won him over. The class happened to have a reputation of being the most difficult, but he earned an A in Donald Boldt’s Business Policy class. Smith went on to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1992. “There is absolutely no doubt that a lot of my career and how I ended up, from a success standpoint, is due to the policy class at ECU and specifically Donald Boldt, who made a lasting impact on me from a business guy’s perspective,” says Smith. Boldt taught part time for the college and then served as the assistant dean for graduate programs from 1992–1999. “That class was a big turning point for me because we studied business models from start to finish, companies that thrived, companies that struggled, and companies that were turned around,” Smith says. “[The class] focused on the dynamics it takes to truly run a business, and it was taught by someone who actually made a payroll and understood the pressures of sitting in a CEO’s seat and doing the things day-in and day-out that it takes to be successful.” Smith and his family have enjoyed ECU’s athletic program throughout the years, and this is Smith’s first year serving on ECU’s Educational Foundation (Pirate Club), and he is “terribly excited,” he said. His wife, Tammy, majored in psychology and is an ECU 1992 graduate as well. In December of 2011, the Smiths pledged $1 million to the Step Up to the Highest Level Campaign that raised funds for the construction of the new basketball practice facility. “We’ve enjoyed the athletic program so much,” says Smith. “When they recruited Jeff Lebo, I considered it a world-class opportunity. Athletics and academics drive each other. I want to see ECU to continue on a course to be a premier university in North Carolina.” “Harry and Tammy Smith have taken the ‘Step Up To The Highest Level Campaign’ as a challenge to move this project and our athletics program forward,” Holland said in the news release about the couple’s gift. “Their generosity should inspire us all at this important time in our athletic history.”

fRoM tHe ADVAnceMent officeEvery year, our annual report highlights just some of our many achievements and notable people who help make the College of Business everything it is. This year’s report is themed “giving back,” and we couldn’t be more grateful for the generosity of our alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and students—and the time they volunteer, too.

Our College would not be where it is today without your visionary support and guidance. Your generosity bolsters both our students and programs—supporting students through scholarships, enriching and improving academic programs, and initiating new projects and innovative approaches to a quality business education. Your funds are also used to improve teaching facilities and upgrade technology, assist faculty research, and supplement state funding of ongoing programs. Likewise, the time you give back through service helps move the College forward. Whether you serve on a board or speak to students in the classroom, you have an impact.

You may give to the College of Business for many reasons—to give back to the institution that gave you your start, to honor cherished memories, to invest in our future leaders and improve the world around you, to name a few. No matter your reason for giving, at the heart of each gift is your desire to make a difference, and we are deeply appreciative for all that you do.

We have nearly 20,000 College of Business alumni living throughout the world. By supporting the College of Business, you invest not only in today’s students, but also in tomorrow’s leaders. Your ongoing participation and commitment are vital to our success.

Thank you for giving back to the College of Business.

We will give to the rising generation the purest inheritance of the nation and better preparation than has ever been given to a preceding generation. This school is an expression of that determination; it was built by the people, for the people, and may it ever remain with the people, as a servant of the people. —Robert Wright, first president of east carolina teachers training School
