Transcript of College Newsletter
Lately our thoughts and prayers have focussed on our fellow
Australians who have been devastated in recent times with the
on-going barrage of natural disasters. Many families at our
College, and certainly in the community of Alice Springs, have
relatives and friends affected by these stressful events. In
response, our REMAR students have coordinated a fund raising effort that will
be held tomorrow at each of the campuses.
Despite the vagaries of the local weather, a number of activities have been held
during recent days. The swimming lessons for years 6 and 8 have commenced
and will continue for several weeks, while on last Tuesday all of our year 9’s
gathered for a reflection day to focus on their goals for the coming year. Last
evening it was good to welcome many parents and their sons and daughters,
from years 9 to 12, to a gathering at the Sadadeen campus
Due to the lateness of our Opening School Mass this year, to accommodate the
proposed opening of the new College hall on 18th March 2011, it has been
decided, just for this year, to issue the student leaders with their badges of
office at simple ceremonies at each campus. The leaders at the Traeger campus
were inducted on last Friday’s campus assembly, while at the Sadadeen
campus, a similar ceremony will coincide with tomorrow’s presentation of an
award to the 2010 Dux of the College, Samuel Heckathorn. The Bath Street
leaders were announced today. All the 2011 student leaders will be
acknowledged in the liturgy for the Opening School Mass, as well.
During the next fortnight (Weeks Four and Five) our College Advisory Board
and the Parents’ and Friends’ Association will begin their regular round of
meetings for the year. These groups play a central role in the life of the College
and provide an important focus for parental involvement.
The Advisory Board will meet on Monday, 14th February at 6.30pm (Board
members, please note the later start due to a calendar clash with the Finance
Committee) while the P&F meeting will be held on Tuesday, 22nd February,
commencing at 7.30pm. Unfortunately the date for this meeting was not
included in this year’s calendar. Please note that the meeting is scheduled for
the Tuesday, not the normal Thursday slot. The meeting will conclude the
matters of the 2010 Executive, in readiness for the Annual General Meeting in
March 2011.
Our Year 12’s will be on retreat for three days during the coming week, from
16th-18th February. This time away from normal classes will be a special get-
together for these students as they consider the journey ahead; their last year of
secondary schooling.

Campus News: Bath St The third week of the term is almost over – we didn’t
get very wet on the weekend, and the campus sur-
vived very well. Classes are in full swing and we are
getting ready for the swimming programme which
will start next week. We welcome back Mr Typuszak
who started his classes today.
SWIMMING PROGRAMME
Due to a lack of qualified Austswim instructors we
have had to make some amendments to the swimming
programme for this year. The Year 3 and 4 classes in
Rooms 13,14,15,16,17 and 18 will have their lessons
next week, for five days only. The children in Rooms
1,8,10, 11 and 12 will commence their classes on
Monday 21st February for five days only. This way
the swimming groups will be smaller and we hope to
achieve similar levels of success.
SRC REPRESENTATIVES AT BATH STREET
Today at assembly we presented badges to our elected
SRC representatives for 2011. Congratulations to the
following students on their elections.
Room 13 – Amelia Scollen and Will Guzman
Room 14 – Chester Hunter and Maddison Weir
Room 15 – Vuyo Mahlangu and Ashley Lines
Room 16 – Molly Belew and Kodi Blunsden
Room 17 – John Juan and Grace Brown
Room 18 – Felicia Lay and Matthew McNamara
The students will be presented with their certificate
and pledge at the whole College Mass on March 18th
in the new College Hall.
REMAR CAKE STALL
This is being held tomorrow at recess time to raise
money for the Qld Premier’s Flood Appeal. All items
will be $2.00. Please support it if you can.

KISS’N’GO
This area can work wonderfully or be very problematic. On
Monday I was returning from a meeting at the Sadadeen
Campus around 3.00pm and viewed some of the most unsafe
driving I have seen. I was forced to a standstill next to the
Church because a number of Bath Street parents were
blocking the corner of Wills Terrace and Bath Street. I then
watched six cars block the corner until they could access the
Kiss’n’Go area. The traffic was then banked up with traffic
trying to turn right into Bath Street. I ask you to please keep
the traffic flowing, and not block the road. If the area is full,
please move on. I have spoken to the police and the Council
Rangers to ask for assistance in defusing this unsafe practice.
One or two parents have also been parking in the Kiss’n’Go
area in the mornings, and accompanying their children onto
the campus. Please note that the Kiss’n’Go is for flow
through traffic and not for parking during these busy times.
HARTLEY STREET ENTRANCE
We have been staffing this entrance to ensure the safety of
the children as they walk through this carpark. Plans are
underway for a secure walkway from Hartley Street to the
campus. Until this is completed, we would appreciate if all
children using this access were accompanied by an adult.
MERIT POINT REWARD PROGRAMME
Thank you to the parents who have agreed to sponsor our
merit point table. We would gratefully accept any further
sponsorship for the 2011 school year.
OPEN AFTERNOON
On Thursday February 17, classrooms at the Bath Street
Campus will be open to families. This is a great opportunity
for parents to view student work and meet your child’s new
teacher. Transition classrooms (Rooms 2, 3 and 5) will be
open from 12:00pm until 1:00pm, then from 2:00pm until
5:00pm. Year One to Four classrooms will be open from
2:00pm until 5:00pm. Please be aware that this is not the
time to discuss students’ progress and behaviour. If you
would like to discuss any issues, make a separate time to
meet with the class teacher.
Looking forward to seeing many of you next Thursday.

contacted by email or phone. If you have not yet been
contacted, or would still like to register, please phone the
Bath St front office or email:

Monique Coleman: United Nations Youth Ambassador
and High School Musical Star Visits OLSH
Monique Coleman, recently appointed UN Ambassador for
Youth visited OLSH Sadadeen on Wednesday the 9th of
February. The United Nations in conjunction with
headspace held an intimate afternoon with 35 local high
school girls from across Alice Springs at OLSH, Sadadeen
campus. Five students from each high school where invited
to attend. OLSH representatives included Jade Hatt, Celine
Ociones, Michelle Wilson, Rosy Hay and Jasmine Gordon.
Tegan Schuster-Bayley and Chelsea Edwards assisted as
welcomers for the invited students.
The afternoon was an inspiring question and answer time
where Monique shared her vision of the importance of
young people within the community. Students then had the
opportunity to hear about Monique’s rise to fame through
High School Musical and her experiences working with
fellow actors such as Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.
Monique shared her experiences of being on Dancing with
the stars and her new show, GimmeMo. Monique
encouraged the students to have a dream and go for it!
Overall it was an inspiring afternoon that will be
remembered.
Come Visit us again Monique,

Campus News: Traeger COLLEGE CALENDER
Have you got one? These are a great way to keep up with
many events across the College. If you have not got one,
ask your child to collect their copy at the front office.
ASSEMBLIES
On our even weeks our assembly will be held at 12:15pm.
All assemblies begin with a prayer focus from a home
group which may be your childs group. All parents are
encouraged to attend the assemblies, simply sign in at the
front office and move to the hall for a 12:15pm start. In
the odd weeks students undertake Pastoral Care Activities
with their class group.
VISITING THE CAMPUS
All are welcome to visit our campus but all visitors must
sign in and obtain a visitors pass from the front office.
This assists us with many safety aspects.
STUDENT PICK UP AND DROP OFF
Please keep in mind that students are not to use or cross
the campus car park in the morning or afternoon. There are
gates either side of the car park to enter and exit the
campus. Unless there are medical reasons parents are
asked not to use the car park to drop off and pick up their
child, it was not designed for this purpose and students are
not to be in this area. At the end of the day, Staff Duty
finishes at 3.15pm. Any students not collected will be
taken to the Front Office where they will need to wait to be
picked up. Thankyou.
BIKE HELMETS
Just a quick reminder - students who ride home will not be
allowed to leave the campus if they are not wearing a
helmet. The student will be directed to the front office to
contact parents to discuss further options. As a side note :
students not wearing a helmet are not covered by
insurance.
NUTS-NO FOR TRAEGER
Due to students with severe allergies on our campus any
nut or nut products are not to be brought to school. Please!
PARISH MASS
Traeger Parish Mass will be held on Sunday 6th of March,
9.30am. The Campus Choir will be performing at the
Mass. All students are encouraged to attend.
HOMEWORK CENTRES
TRAEGER CAMPUS HOMEWORK CENTRE
All students are welcome to attend Traeger’s Homework
Centre; however, you need a Traeger Homework Centre
card. To get a card, all you need to do is get a form from
the front office, read it, fill it out and return it after it has
been signed by parents/guardians. It’s that simple!
Where: Traeger Library
When: Thursday 3.00 – 4.00pm
5
INDIGENOUS HOMEWORK CENTRE
This will begin next week on Wednesday and Thursday.
The session goes from 3:00 – 4:00pm and will be held in the
6.2 home room. Students attending will be bussed home.
Please note the change from Monday to the Wednesday.
Obviously there are many opportunities for students of our
campus to receive extra help. I encourage students to begin
on a positive note and take advantage of these homework
sessions as help can also be obtained. I would ask that
parents assist us by encouraging their child to attend as well
as being prompt when picking up their child.
OPENING MASS
Our opening College Mass at the Marian Centre, Sadadeen
Campus on March 18th .All students are to attend school
firstly so that the rolls and homeroom items for the day can
be taken care of prior to leaving. Please check the newsletter
for further details.
LUNCH CRATES
All year levels have access to place their lunches in the cool
room until lunch time. As our students move towards Years
7&8 this offer does not seem very popular. Please encourage
your child to take advantage of this during morning
homeroom.
CAKE STALL
At recess tomorrow students from our Sadadeen Campus
will be selling cakes to raise money for the flood / cyclone
appeal. There will be limited sales from our canteen at recess
to encourage families to support this cause.
