What we are:

The College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University has provided innovative University Mental Health Services for more than 15 years beginning with individualized coaching, and more recently NITEO which launched in 2014. Our work is driven by the philosophy and experience that students with mental health challenges thrive when empowered to develop critical skills and support required by collegiate and work environments.

Who we are:

Dori Hutchinson, ScD, CPRP, and Larry Kohn, MS, have worked together for over 30 years providing recovery-oriented services to young adults living with mental health challenges. Courtney Joly-Lowdermilk has worked in mental health, special education, and disability services in higher education for more than 10 years.

Academic Seminar: Through a series of intensive workshops and completion of an online college course, students apply and develop their academic skills and executive functioning.

Wellness Seminar: An exploration of various domains of wellness and resiliency. Emphasis is placed on developing healthy interpersonal skills, stress hardiness, and self-care.

PhotoVoice: An examination of social justice and empowerment through photography. Students construct narratives as young adults living with mental health challenges.

Writing Seminar: Students practice and enhance their critical reading comprehension, expos-itory writing, and time-management skills through weekly discussions and writing exercises.

Developing Mindfulness and Stress Resilience: A survey of mindfulness-based practices and techniques that cultivate hopeful thinking and build resilience and self-compassion.

Ideas Worth Discussing: A series of student-led discussions about current events and topics of interest. Students practice communication and leadership skills through discussion participation and facilitation.

Career Seminar: An investigation of students’ educational and vocational identity and goals. Students explore college majors and career tracks based on personal values and ambitions.

Open Studio: Students practice wellness strategies and interpersonal communication skills through engagement in expressive arts including music production, painting, and photography.

Supported Study Hall (optional): A structured and supported opportunity for students to attend to coursework, NITEO assignments, and college re-entry and employment applications on-site.

NITEO classes meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and Coaches work with students to schedule their weekly, one-hour meeting, which can be held anytime after classes on these days. NITEO students are on-site ~14 hours/week while attending classes and participating in Coaching.

Students work closely with Coaches to identify their strengths and areas of need, learn and practice critical skills, and receive intensive support for academics, social, emotional, and physical well-being.
