Introduction

Forsyth Technical Community College recognizes its responsibility to provide advanced placement status to those students with valid and credible learning experiences beyond the campus classroom. The basic premise of the advanced standing process is that program-placed students shall be given the opportunity to earn appropriate college credit when their previous studies or training have already provided the knowledge, competencies, and skills associated with a course. The College’s commitment to this philosophy of advanced standing is coupled with its mandate to ensure standards of academic quality comparable to traditional instruction.

Definition of Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is the award of academic credit for subject matter competency that has been gained by previous academic study or training. This may include, but is not limited to, college credit based upon individual participation in the Advanced Placement (AP) program of the College Entrance Examination Board; other placement examinations; formal articulation agreements; transfer credit from other regionally accredited institutions of higher learning; professional certification; training provided by non-collegiate institutions, such as armed forces and service schools.

Criteria Governing Advanced Standing

The following criteria apply to all forms of advanced standing:

• To be eligible for advanced standing, a student must be currently enrolled in a credit program at the College, or a dual enrollment student wishing to use articulation credit to meet course prerequisites.

• Advanced standing must be applied toward a specific program at the

College. Non-curricular students are not eligible for advanced standing.

• In order to graduate from Forsyth Tech, a candidate for an associate degree must complete at least 20 semesters hours of credit at Forsyth Tech, with a minimum of 10 semester hours of credit in the major area. A candidate for a diploma must complete at least 10 semester hours of credit at Forsyth Tech, with a minimum of 8 semester hours of credit in their major area. Candidates for a certificate of completion must complete

a minimum of 25 percent of their required course work at Forsyth Tech. These requirements may not be met by credit awarded through Advanced Standing.

• Award of credit through advanced standing shall only be given to

courses listed in the current Forsyth Tech Catalog. • No credit shall be awarded that duplicates earned course credit at the

College, at other institutions, or other credit awarded through advanced standing.

• Students may not petition for Institutional Credit by Examination for a

particular course if they have previously enrolled (either for credit or audit) in that course, either at Forsyth Tech or at another institution.

• The College reserves the right to place a time limit on prior learning

experiences for which advanced standing may be granted. Generally, the College has a five-year time limit for accepting credit for technical courses taken previously at other institutions. The Dean of the academic division, in consultation with the appropriate program faculty, will determine if courses taken more than five years ago can be used in the student’s current program of study.

• Students are responsible for providing the College with appropriate

official documentation used in determining advanced standing credit. In the case of foreign transcripts, the student must assume the responsibility of having transcripts evaluated by an approved evaluation agency.

• The official transcript shall specify the type of advanced standing credit

awarded, equivalent courses, and the number of credits awarded. Advanced standing credit shall be distinct from earned course credit.

• No grades, grade point average, or other indication of academic standing

shall be associated with advanced standing entries on the official transcript.

• Credit awarded through advanced standing is applicable only to Forsyth

Tech’s curricular requirements. Students are cautioned that credits awarded through AP examinations, International Baccalaureate, articulation, CLEP examinations, credit-by-examination, or other means of advanced standing may not be accepted in transfer by other post-secondary institutions.

Credit-By-Examination (Proficiency Exams)

Students who have been admitted to a specific program, or are already enrolled in a program of study, may request to take a proficiency exam for a course that has a proficiency exam available. Students must receive permission from the appropriate department chairperson to earn credit for the course by proficiency examination, and must pay the testing fee before taking the exam. Students do not necessarily have to be registered or enrolled in a course before requesting a proficiency exam for a course that has a proficiency exam available. However, if students are enrolled in a course for which a proficiency exam is requested, the request must be made by the 10th day of class. Students who withdraw from a course after the 10th day of class in any semester and have not formally submitted a request may not earn credit for that course by proficiency exam for a period of one year. Academic advisors will certify that students have not been enrolled in the course within the past year and that the prerequisites for the course have been satisfied. Some programs have restricted proficiency exams, and students must be admitted to that program before a request will be considered. Students may take a proficiency exam for a given course only once in a 12-month period at a non-refundable cost of $10 per exam. Guidelines on how to apply for a proficiency exam can be obtained from the office of the appropriate division dean, Counseling, Career and Disability Services or the Records office. Students who successfully pass a proficiency exam will be given a grade of CR (credit granted or passed proficiency) and hours earned will be granted but will not affect the grade point average (GPA). The form for requesting a proficiency examination is available in the Academic Division office. The 2-part form is shown in Attachment 3.

Forsyth Tech High School Articulation Agreements

Articulation agreements between Forsyth Tech and the secondary school systems within the Forsyth Tech service region provide a seamless academic pathway from high school into community college programs. When a student takes an articulated course, he/she is taking a high school course that results in the same learning outcomes as a similar Forsyth Tech course. The high school and community college faculty have examined the course competencies and agreed upon their equivalency.

Forsyth Tech has current articulation agreements with the following secondary school systems:

Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System (WS/FCS) Stokes County School System

Forsyth Tech will grant credit by articulation for courses listed in the secondary school’s articulation agreement provided the student has:

• Received a grade of ―B‖ or higher in the secondary course(s) for which articulated credit is requested and receive a VOCATS raw score of 80 or above. • Taken the College Placement Test (CPT) in Reading, Writing and Math and obtain

scores which place the student into college level work. Students who have an ACT composite score of 21 or SAT scores of 480 Verbal and 500 Math are exempt from taking the CPT test and the credit is awarded

• Enrolled at Forsyth Tech within 24 months of graduation from the secondary school

Credit awarded by articulation is based upon the articulation agreement that was in effect at the time that the student completed the secondary school course(s). Any issues regarding the nature and equivalency of course content will be referred to the appropriate Forsyth Tech division dean before a final decision is made.

Process for Applying for Advanced Standing Credit

In order to apply for advance standing credit, the student must be currently enrolled in a credit program at the college and credits must be applied toward a specific program. Provided all criteria governing Advanced Standing Credit is met, the following procedures are to be followed:

Advanced Placement Examinations (AP): The Admissions Office must be provided an official score report from the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). Please see www.collegeboard.com/ap for information about how to request an official score report.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program Examinations (IB): Students must have the IB Organization send scores directly to the Admissions Office.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP): Students must provide the Admissions Office with official score reports from the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). Please see www.collegeboard.com/clep for information about how to request an official score report.

Credit-By-Examination (Proficiency Exams): Students should review the Proficiency Exam list (page 9) to determine that a proficiency exam exists for the course. They should then discuss the course content with the program coordinator and department chair. Obtain a ―Request for Proficiency Exam‖ form (see attachment 3) from the academic division office. Complete the form, obtain the indicated signatures, and pay the $10 fee.

Articulation Agreements – High School Tech Prep: The ―Articulated Credit Agreement‖ form (Attachment 2) is completed by the high school Career and Technical Education office and mailed to the student by the school system. Student must achieve a raw score of 80 on the VOCATS test also. The student must then submit the form to the college Admissions Office. To have the course credits granted by the Forsyth Tech, students must also take the College Placement Test (CPT) in Reading, Writing and Math and obtain scores which place the student into college level work. Without acceptable CPT scores, the articulated credit is not awarded. Students who have an ACT composite score of 21 or SAT scores of 480 Verbal and 500 Math are exempt from taking the CPT test and the credit is awarded.

Articulation Agreements – All Others: The student must meet with the Program Coordinator and discuss the option of articulation credit based on previous training, licensure or certification. If the Program Coordinator agrees that articulation of credit is justified, the student completes the ―Request for Advanced Standing Credit‖ and attaches the appropriate documentation. The Program Coordinator will review the completed form the showing credits to be awarded, approve and send to the Division Dean. The Division Dean will review, and if in agreement, will approve and forward to the Records Office. The Registrar will make and final review, and if in agreement, will post the credits to the student’s record/transcript.
